Spent $5 on the welcome bundle, seemed like a good deal. Got Cho'Gall and the D.Va Announcer out of it, so I'm pleased.
I think I want to buy a melee assassin but I'm not sure who yet. I am leaning towards Zeratul but I don't have 10,000 gold and I don't think I want to spend 750 gems on him.
Get Illidan. He's old, he's cheap, and if you die a ton on him, people won't even be mad, they'll just be like ... Illidan ... sigh.

For melee assassins, isn't Valeera pretty much top of the heap?
Depends on what you're looking for in from the character. Valeera's got excellent burst and CC tools, and that's pretty rare on the other melee assassins. Thrall and Ragnaros hit hard and sustain well, which is a different thing, but kind of the opposite end of that spectrum.
Zeratul and Genji chase really well and can burst fairly hard, but not quite the way Valeera does because that's all she's got before 10. They're also very dodgy or sticky, depending on how you use their tools. Also, Void Prison becomes crazy-good in coordinated play.
The Butcher can be an absolute monster against disorganized play or low-CC teams but lacks stickiness without some help from his teammates or taking Lamb to the Slaughter.
Twin Blades Varian is possibly the all-around stickiest and hardest to kill melee assassin in the game at the moment. He doesn't burst basically at all unless you've got the talent that adds % damage to his charge, though. Sonya is similar.
Greymane, who I forgot, doesn't really count as a melee assassin in my mind so much as a ranged assassin who can flip out and kill people at the price of most of the tools that Raynor / Valla / Zul'jin have to be genuinely good at ranged play and zoning. Cocktail would be a joke if he couldn't wolf out, and so on.

Considering he was asking about Zeratul/Illidan, I was assuming he was looking for a more bursty/squishy melee assassin. Which means it comes down to Genji, Zeratul, Illidan, and Valeera.

But the stereotype is Illidan burns his gap closers to dive to his own death.
No one is debating that Illidan isn't capable of doing a lot of work when played well. Just that a very large percentage of randoms misuse him and faceplant enough that such results are practically expected of Illidan.

I picked Uther to help an instalock Illidan in HL the other day. I've been spoiled playing with No-Quarter and wasn't anticipating the "Instantly Metamorphosis into the back line and then die," gameplay approach the guy opted for.

Hey, speaking of buying heroes. Very happy to see that Lucio was on sale for 375 gems for the week, snapped him up!
Played a game yesterday with SeGaTai and Playeasy as Medivh on Tomb of the Spider Queen. It felt like a pretty fair matchup between the teams, our team had some mistakes and we were down bottom keep and had to push back boss twice, losing top keep. But I finally got into a groove landing spells with Medivh, which resulted in some big turnarounds, helping us push back and get the weavers a couple times and landing some ganks.
Finished the game with a huge team fight by the boss where I landed a force of will on SeGaTai's Greymane when he had no hp left, which let him land a double Go For the Throat. Their Zul'Jin and someone else are running away with very little health, and we are able to portal and wipe them out. After that, we can't make a call as a team (boss, push, anything). So we all go different directions, but we were ahead enough that we ended up just winning anyway before any of the enemy team spawned.
Getting a 4 man kill and then looking at the mini map to see someone in every lane and one going towards boss when a keep was down pained my soul, your medivh play picked up as the game went on

This is one of the ways I'm pretty bad sometimes, I don't have a great understanding of what the best decision is in the moment. Looking back (heck, even at the time after we all split), we absolutely should've just went core since top keep was already down.
It's the stupid thing of wiping the team, then thinking "let's create an advantage!" and trying to push the other keep or take boss (or both), when you could literally just end the game in half the time by going core as a team.
I've gotten pretty decent with Greymane. Now, though, I'm a bit stuck because usually the other team will figure out to just wait, then shut me down super hard if I commit at all. I'm not really sure what to do when the other team is like, "Oh, that guy is the good player, murder him 100%."
What is this I don't even.

Sandbag for the first third of the game, then surprise them when it matters.

Hope your team has a dive buddy for you, mostly. Greymane has a scary-high output and isn't that hard, but he's got few-to-no defensive tools and you need to be getting them from someone else, like Uther.
Greymane wins most fights where you have to wait as well if you go cocktail build, which you should. It's one of the reasons he's so strong. Incredibly strong poke while also having extremely high aa dps. Just sit at range lobbing huge damage cocktails if they don't want to let you fight, eventually someone will get low, instantly murder them, and then the rout is on.

I've seen cocktails from some not-very-great Greymanes doing some serious chunking, yeah.

Cocktail build is tons of fun too. Only problem is it's not the best on some maps and with a good chunk of frontline-less QM comps.

Also cursed bullet is crazy broken right now. 40% HP on a 30s CD. He's definitely the best ranged AA right now.
all this talk bout melee assassins and y'alls are forgetting sonya???? aka the best one?????????

Every time I pick Sonya the other team takes double tank Muradin and he just runs me over. Every time the other team takes Sonya my team is stupid and has literally zero CC.

What are Anub's weaknesses? He's got a giant health pool, good mobility and stuns for days, plus he can body block like the best.

He gets shit on by autoattackers.
His healthpool is very tiny for a Warrior, but he has all that lovely Spell Armor to make up for it.
But it doesn't do jack against AAers. Someone like Zul'jin can just shred him.
imo Anub has no weaknesses and is basically SSS Omega tier.
The only raw autoattacker with enough power to really threaten him is Zul'jin, and he basically hard counters Zul'jin in real 5v5s. Zul'jin gets low to do damage, pops dingo, whoops cocoon, wait it out, instant kill. All the other autoattackers rely enough on spell damage that Anub is still a beast against them.
There is no team I wouldn't play Anub into if you let me.
edit: basically having "kill this solo player or make this fight 4v5 while also probably canceling a huge cooldown ult" on a 60s cooldown with a big range is hell of dumb and somehow avoids being nerfed.

Only in QM where she can abuse the shit out of randoms because there's a very good chance the enemy team will be given zero counters to her by the MM.
