"The Pokémon League wishes to congratulate you, after much deliberation it has been decided to accept your application to participate in the League Challenge..."
You continue, slowly coming to terms with the fact that the words you're reading are really there.
"Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity..."
"...Expenses paid..."
"...Meet your assigned proctor at the time and location below..."
You skip down to the bottom of the page, noting first the unassuming address, and then the listed date and time.
One week away.
One week and you begin your very own Pokémon Journey.

~ What Is This? ~
A play-by-post roleplaying tabletop game set in the Pokémon universe, and focusing on the Pokémon League Challenge. Travel the region, meet new friends, battle challenging opponents, earn eight badges by defeating Gym Leaders, and ultimately take on the Elite Four for a chance at greatness.
It will use a homebrew system called PKMN, sometimes referred to as Voltage. It is a diceless system, without a huge amount of bookkeeping (helpful for when you have four or more Pokémon to keep track of) and quick battles (helpful when you have a wilderness encounter with a dozen or two Pokémon mixing it up with a handful of Trainers on deck). I think it does a good job of capturing the feel of Pokémon battles, but I'm biased.
We can have a vote, or discuss which region to set the game in, whether a canon one like Kanto or Sinnoh, or an entirely new one.
You do not have to be good at math, know everything there is to know about tabletop gaming, or be up-to-date on the Pokémon franchise to participate (though some basic familiarity and interest in mechanics/the setting would likely serve you well).
~ What Isn't This? ~
This probably won't be a grim or realistic interpretation of Pokémon. There likely won't be a lot of ethical dilemmas about capturing, training, and battling, or much explanation about how tiny critters can spit flame or turn into red light and get stuff in a ball. Just roll with it.
The world of Pokémon is a brighter, kinder universe than the one we call home. Pokémon battle fiercely, but don't get wounded or maimed. Rivals might plague your every step, but they don't want to see you badly hurt. Even your enemies are more likely to be misunderstood or misguided than actually evil (most of the time, anyway). You can safely ask a police officer for help, confide in a Gym Leader for training tips, and generally trust authority figures to do their job. This may take a great deal of imagination but that's why this is a roleplaying game.
You also will never accidentally kill anything, Pokémon or Trainer (this happened a lot with the first system I used for Pokémon purposes back in the day). Death is a thing that can happen, but only intentionally, and never lightly.
On that note, if anything in the game makes you uncomfortable or gets in the way of you enjoying yourself, inform me immediately by PM and I will do what I can to remedy the situation. If you are not having fun, I am not doing my job.
Finally, it is neither suggested nor recommended that you attempt to catch 'em all. If you wish to acquire all known Pokémon in a tabletop game, please provide me with a source of immortality and I'll see what I can do.
~ I Like This. How Do I Make A Thing Happen? ~
Post your interest, create a Trainer and their starting Pokémon, ask for advice/assistance if needed. Don't forget to mention which region you would like to play in (or what you'd like to see in a custom region) so we can get that ball rolling.
I'm looking for 3-5 players, though I'm flexible on that. It would be nice to have posts every one or two days, but faster or slower works so long as everyone is happy with the progress being made. I plan to recruit for one week (fancy that) but may begin a bit earlier or later depending on interest/eagerness.

~ Creating a Trainer ~Think about who your Trainer is and why they applied to participate in the Pokémon League Challenge. Your trainer doesn't have to have their heart set on being a Champion! The League Challenge might be used to broaden one's horizons, travel to new and exciting places, and meet interesting and powerful new friends. Future Breeders, Researchers, and Rangers alike can benefit from the perspective and experience of earning badges.
First impressions are important! Describe what your Trainer looks like, and the impression they might give to someone meeting them for the first time. Are they approachable? Scary? Well-dressed? Long-winded? This will help acquaint other players with your character, and inform how NPCs will initially react to you.
You can't judge a book by its cover. Maybe your Trainer has a few quirks that don't line up with how they look - A tough Black Belt who adores cute Pokémon, a no-nonsense Student who can't stand Grass Types. Feel free to write these down, or keep them secret, as you prefer.

You probably should put something in the
Name field. Whatever comes to mind.
For your
Class, try to think of something that accurately describes how your character gets things done, since it will affect how your actions can (and should!) be performed. A Martial Artist who uses their Physique to bruise someone is probably using some sweet kung-fu moves, a Super Nerd doing the same thing is probably glad that her parents made her take those self-defense classes as she stamps on someone's instep. A ninja sneaking into a lab makes healthy use of the ductwork, walls, and ceiling, whereas the Harmless Tourist grabs a clipboard and strolls past the guard with confidence. The outcome is the same either way, but style counts for a lot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are four
Traits, and
Voltage, and you have 6 ranks to distribute among them. I recommend putting 3 into Voltage, 2 into your 'main' Trait, and 1 into a backup. Having some Traits at 0 is fine, as you can still use them in a pinch with the Voltage Trait (having Voltage at 0 is a bad idea).
Physique is your character's strength and toughness. You use it to attack other Trainers (or Pokémon in a pinch), break things with brute force, or endure something that could hurt you.
Knowledge is your character's memory and perception. You use it to remember or confirm useful details, figure out what makes another character tick, and accurately size up a situation or area.
Mobility is your Character's agility and ability to get where they want to be. You use it to move around quickly, or unnoticed, to reach difficult places, and to evade pursuit or pursue someone attempting to escape.
Network is your Character's affability and the quality of their acquaintances. You use it to give the things you say some extra oomph, to get an NPC's attention and interest, or to call in a favor from a prior associate.
Voltage is your Character's mental and physical resources. You use it to buy or trade for useful items or reveal a cheap item you fortuitously brought with you. You may also use it to mimic the effect of one of the other four traits, at an increased cost.
If you'd like to see how Traits are used in detail,
look here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inventory is where you will put things you buy to help you on your journey. Generally if it costs less than 500 Pokedollars you may assume you have one handy (potions, antidotes), if it costs up to 5,000, you may reveal it with Voltage (a revive, a non-basic Pokeball), and if it costs more than that you have to find somewhere selling it first (TMs, Bicycles)
Trainer Exp is 0 for now. As you explore, learn, and battle you will earn some to use on your Pokémon (Trainers don't use Exp).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ Creating a Pokémon ~Your Trainer's first ally on their journey! Are they a pet, a friend, or a guardian? Were they gifted to your Trainer from a family member or Professor, or did they go out and catch it themselves? Do they get along splendidly or are they still working things out?
Your Pokémon has a
Nickname! Or maybe it doesn't and you just call it by its species (weird).
Your Pokémon has a
Species! There are over 800 of these so I may not immediately notice if you just roll your face on the keyboard for this. You don't have to pick a typical starter Pokémon, but you may want to avoid something that would look silly if it lost to a Route 1 Pidgey.
Choose two
Types for your Pokémon from the usual list of 18 Elemental Pokémon Types. These are less of an overall elemental description (as they are in the games) and more of an indicator of what Types of attacks your Pokémon is really good at using (they get a small damage bonus). If you want to use a Type combo that differs from the official one for your Pokémon's species, feel free (or even encouraged) to do so.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A beginning Pokémon's
Loyalty is usually "Friendly"! Captured Pokémon may have other loyalties like "Hostile", "Unfriendly", and "Neutral", depending on their nature and the circumstances of their capture. Particularly dedicated Trainers may even have their Pokémon eventually become "Devoted"!
Hostile: Will go out of its way to harm you, or cause problems. Ignores all authority.
Unfriendly: Will be distant and uncooperative, and cause problems if a good opportunity presents itself.
Neutral: Will disobey orders that it doesn't agree with, but otherwise pretty obedient.
Friendly: Will follow all but the most offensive orders, and offers its aid freely.
Devoted: Follows orders without question, attempts to anticipate the Trainer's wishes and act accordingly.
A
Demeanor is the initial impression your Pokémon gives to those who interact with it, or how it behaves when left to its own devices. Choose something you think is both fitting, and fun to work with.
A
Need is something your Pokémon desires that your Trainer can provide in order to persuade it to follow orders or to improve the quality of their friendship. Neglecting a Pokémon's Need is a sure way to damage their Loyalty.
A
Quirk is something odd, funny, or unique about your Pokémon that separates them from other Pokémon of the same Species or Demeanor. Choose something you think will be interesting, and provide you with entertaining diversions while acting out their antics.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your Pokémon's
Weaknesses are elemental attacks that it finds difficult to defend against, or from which it takes massive damage! You may choose any number of these from the traditional 18 Pokémon Elemental Types, but between three and six is probably a good number.
A Pokémon's
Resistances, on the other hand, are elemental attacks that they are really good at protecting themselves from, or that they take negligible damage from even if hit head on! You choose a number of these equal to however many Weaknesses the Pokémon has, and add two more for good measure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pokémon begins with two
Moves, and will quickly gain access to many more.
A Move looks something like this -
Tackle [Physical/Powerful/Normal] - having a name and three terms that describe how it functions: Category, Type, and Style.
A Move's
Category determines which attacking and defending stats they use to calculate damage. Physical Moves deal damage equal to their Attack Stat plus half their Special Attack minus the target's Defense, Special Moves deal damage equal to their Attack Stat plus half their Special Attack minus the target's Special Defense.
A Move's
Type determines what elemental damage it deals. When one of a Pokémon's Types matches the Type of a Move it uses, it increases the damage dealt by 1. This is also how it's determined if the Target is Weak to, Resists, or is neutral toward, the Move.
A Move's
Style determines how its Damage is calculated, and any extra bonuses it may have.
Powerful
Shifts the Target into a new Area within the same Field.
Offensive
The User, and Target, both Shift to a new Area within the same Field.
Ranged
This attack may be used against any Target within the same Field.
Mobile
The User may shift to a new Area, within the same Field, before or after attacking.
Priority
The User automatically attacks before non-Priority Users. Multiple Priority Users consult Speed as usual.
Boosting (Stat)
User increases the listed stat by +1. If the stat is damaged, increase it an additional +1 (+2 total).
Harassing (Stat)
Deals 1 Damage to Target's listed Stat.
There are other Moves that have different Styles, ones that deal no damage but have increased side effects, and even particularly powerful Signature Moves, but you'll to find a TM or a tutor to teach them to your Pokémon. Good luck!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pokémon's
Stamina is equal to its HP Stat multiplied by two, plus its Speed Stat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pokémon has six
Stats: HP, Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, and Special Defense.
All stats begin at 1, and a starting Pokémon get 15 exp to improve them.
To increase a stat, pay an amount of Exp equal to the stat's current rank plus one. So if you want to increase your Pokémon's HP from 1 to 2, you pay two Exp, and if you want to increase it again to 3, you pay three Exp.
You may also spend 1 Exp to learn an extra Move as many times as you like (please do not teach your Pokémon 15 moves).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your Pokémon begins with two
Assists, which are like the Pokémon version of a Trainer Trait, allowing them to perform useful actions outside of battle. Good choices of Assist include new modes of movement like flying or swimming (all Pokémon can walk, or in some cases shuffle) and new capabilities (like creating and controlling elements like fire or electricity outside of their Moves). Pick ones that make sense for your Pokémon, a Charmander that can't set things on fire outside of battle is weird (though maybe that's just it's Quirk: "Only Gets Fired Up In Battle").
Burrow - Fill or dig out usable tunnels through the ground.
Burn - Unleash fire to set objects alight or destroy flammables.
Chill - Create icy surfaces and freeze water.
Corrode - Melt away obstacles with powerful acid.
Cut - Slash through ropes or plant matter or clear paths through choppable terrain.
Electrify - Charge things with electricity, destroy some objects and make certain areas very dangerous.
Flash - Reveal hidden things, control light, and drive away darkness.
Fly - Perform aerial maneuvers and carry cargo or passengers in the air.
Gust - Blow away light objects or obscuring smoke or mist, clear the air.
Intuit - Accurately understands human language. In conjuction with psychic ability, it may speak as well.
Soak - Create pools of water or widen fissures, put out fires and ruin stuff that water would ruin.
Runner - Move incredibly fast for short distances, or jog all day long.
Psy Power - Draw on background emotions to cause strange effects and reveal secrets.
Sneak - Take advantage of bad visibility to move unseen.
Swim - Perform aquatic maneuvers and carry cargo or passengers in the water.
You may purchase additional Assists the same way you upgrade a stat - spend an amount of Exp equal to the Pokémon's current number of Assists, plus one. It's not recommended to increase this now, but if you do you may have a third Assist for 3 Exp (DO NOT GIVE YOUR POKéMON FIVE ASSISTS. Yet).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that's that. There's much more to learn, but your Trainer and their Pokémon will have to show up at that special date and time next week first. Hope to see you there.

The target cannot shift Areas until after the end of its next turn.
Background:
A gangly, teenage lad, often seen charging around in a rather worn lab coat.
An optimist at heart, Richter has always believed in the power of possibility.
That is, every theory is true, until disproven.
This doesn't mean that Richter gets everything right, but when his latest fad comes crashing down around him, it means his next attempt will be springing right back up the very next second.
And whilst this doesn't make him well-suited to the formal types of learning, he has rather accumulated a large amount of knowledge... empirically, as well as a large amount of hear-say.
North:
?
Not sure there's much of interest about the history of a pet rock.
Especially one so disinclined to moving.
Before meeting Richter, North was rather content hitching rides on vehicles, occasionally aggregating magnetic minerals to himself as he passed.
Or otherwise simply lying in the sun.
Richter + North:
Things only changed for North when Richter was plumbing the town for ley lines.
Richter was following the swing of his makeshift pendulum, making a map of the oscillations and hoping to find some sort of local nexus.
Having mapped out his backyard, all the pendulum measurements appeared to be converging on his parents' trailer.
So taking out his pendulum for one last measurement, Richter stumbled on the source, as his divining tool became forceably attached to North, who was secured underneath.
North was more than happy to welcome the iron bob, but Richter needed it for his continuing experiment.
So Richter immediately tried to wrest it from North's body.
It was a fairly meager effort; Richter pulling on one side of the cord, North sitting resolute and nonchalant on the other.
However, Richter's flailing was enough to move his cotton lab coat.
So as Richter bent down to pry the head of his pendulum from the Pokemon, he discharged into North.
And that was something worth moving for.
Nowadays, Richter carries a wool cloth around, that appears to 'rub off' onto North well enough.
It certainly beats rubbing his feet along deep carpet, or trying to find a portable Vandergraph generator.
Although it didn't really help his experiment get back on track.
The iron plumbob refuses to do anything but point at the Pokemon now.
Region-wise, every Pokemon game I've run thus far has been in Kanto, so that's well-tread ground for me. I lived in Hawaii for a little while, so Alola/S&M was pretty nostalgic. I have a soft spot for Sinnoh since DPPlt was when I really got back into Pokemon, and HGSS are, in my opinion, the best Pokemon games.
I don't know a dang thing about Hoenn. Missed that boat pretty hard.
Anyway, character looks great @discrider! Barrier and Earthquake should be fun to see in action. I should probably post a link to this thread in the gaming index. Not sure what the venn diagram of "people who routinely look at the Critical Failures forum" and "people who would like to play in a Pokemon tabletop game" look like, but a smidge of outreach couldn't hurt.
Would it be horribly impolite if I rejigged Aleksandr in the new system, maybe aged him up to 16-17 (depending on what sort of age you want to go for as a group), and submitted him for this?
VOLNOY MUST SURF AGAIN.
3DS FCode: 1993-7512-8991
Age-wise, I figure 16+ would make the most sense? With possible exceptions down to maybe 13 with parental waivers and League approval.
Augh. Times flies.
Background:
On his fifteenth birthday, Al (or Sascha, as his parents call him, which he HATES) was given a Pokemon of his own, the son of two of his father's most famous battlers, Tyman and Voda, his Floatzels. He gave this Buizel the name Volnoy, and quickly formed a very strong bond with the sea weasel, even going so far as to swimming with the Pokemon daily, as part of his training regimen. Not even one year later, Al begged his parents to let him enter a local tournament for children his age, with Volnoy as his partner. Given the small-scale nature of the competition (children under 15 years of age, one Pokemon, one fall), his parents agreed. Al almost won, too. He reached the final through grit, determinatino and talent, and was beaten by a boy two years older than him, who brought his Luxray to the tournament. Volnoy was outclassed by the fully evolved Gleam Eyes pokemon, and beaten. Al swore to be a better trainer, to protect his Pokemon, and to figure out a technique for his beloved water type to beat Electrics.
For his sixteenth birthday present, his parents took Al on holiday to the Kanto region, hoping to listen to some of Professor Oak's legendary lectures on Pokemon, to visit the Indigo Plateau, and to spend some in Pewter City. He picked up quite a bit of useful knowledge there, leading to his ambition to combine training and breeding to become a renowned trainer, just like his parents.

Al is of the 'Never quit! Do your best! With determination, you can do anything!' camp, and it comes through in his behaviour. He is also rather protective of his Pokemon, sometimes stepping in the way to take a blow meant for Volnoy, especially if the attack is going to faint his fighting partner.

Second thing is that each rank gets you a 'token' that in a real life game would be a colored coin you could throw at the GM in order to make something that would be tough or particularly challenging happen. "Tough or particularly challenging" is a concept that depends equally on your class and trait rank.
Voltage works differently, in that each token represents either 10k pokedollars you can spend on someone actually selling something, 5k pokedollars you retroactively 'spent' in order to be able to pull something useful out of your backpack on the fly, and most importantly you can spend two of them to mimic any Exploit from one of the other Traits, giving you a certain amount of wiggle room with your stats (ie. Even with Network 0, so long as you have two Voltage to spend you can be persuasive in a pinch).
ShockG ran a game a bit back with this system that showed how this works in play. You can note that starting blowing my tokens as fast as I could, Knowledge token to "Awareness" Exploit Route 1, two voltage spent to trigger Mobility's "Stealthy Approach" (since I had Mobility 0), Physique token to damage a wild Pokemon, and his last voltage to pull out a Pokeball to throw (Probably not necessary in retrospect, since Pokeballs are less than 500 Pokebucks).
Going Voltage 2 to get Knowledge 1 would make sense in Aleksandr's case since he probably would have 'hobbyist, basic' knowledge of Ace Trainer matters (ie. Pokemon and battling).
For inventory, the only things that really have to be there always are things that you bought with Voltage (since as long as you have them, unused, that Voltage stays spent/invested). Right now the only thing you'd really want to put there are items that have some sort of significance or commemorative value. Discrider got it exactly right with his Iron Plumbob and Wool cloth since those are inexpensive items, but are probably important to him and his relationship to his Pokemon.
Flavor items, basically.
If you want to list out something like "Lots of potions, lots of Poke Balls, lots of antidotes, lots of changes of underwear" feel free to do so, but it ain't necessary except to remind yourself you have the option to always assume you have cheapy-cheap items.
Edit: And adding the Fighting type to Pokemon that are normally single-typed is my favorite thing to do in this system. Good job!
Edit2: Rounded down for attack stats. Volnoy's Physical moves will currently deal 4(+1 STAB) damage. You'll probably wait until you have his Attack at 7 before you raise his SA again, if you're minmaxing.
Adding Fighting to Volnoy's typing just seemed to make sense! Also, I like how Speed adds to defense in this version, by adding to Stamina. Really slick implementation. I'm sorta tempted to change the ranged attack to a stat-buff move, but I can leave that for XP, maybe. They do seem pretty useful, especially for something like HP for the longevity. Interesting to see how that Geodude uses it. As for the min-maxing, that wasn't exaaaaactly my aim. I just figured it'd be useful to have the SA2 to give a bit more beef to Volnoy's attacks. He's meant to be a glass cannon, after all!
Edit: Oh yeah, I'd maybe like to visit Kalos if you were up for that area. I'll admit that the dressup in that game, and the rollerblades over bicycles would really appeal to Al. Hoenn also has a soft spot in my heart, as the first Pokémon game I really PLAYED all the way through was Ruby. Are we doing anything with ambitions that were in the other game using this system?

For Stats, I specifically wanted to avoid that PTA thing where you often just... don't ever put points into a stat because you get nothing out of it? Every stat in PKMN ought to be useful on some level, so attack stats granting some crossover bonus and speed giving you some extra staying power seemed appropriate.
The minmaxing comment wasn't derogatory so much as recognition that if you want to maximize your Physical damage (which you ought to on a Physical sweeper) you should be putting a very precise amount of points into Special Attack (Magic numbers are 2 and 2, 7 and 4, 11 and 6, and so on). One very interesting side effect is that even a Physical Attacker can use Special Moves with decent success. Attack 7, Special Attack 4 gets you 9 damage on Physical attacks, but if you use a Special Attack it will still deal 7 damage, only 2 points less. If you find yourself against a Physical wall, you might still have some options if you invested in a couple Special Moves!
Mixed Attackers are also neat. Attack 6, Special Attack 5 uses 2 less Exp than the build above, but attacks both Physically and Specially at 8 damage. You can use that 2 Exp to grab a couple extra Moves to diversify and capitalize on your opponent's weakest defense, assuming you can figure out which it is.
Edit: Harass and Boost are really powerful in simple scenarios, yeah. Taking something that boosts your stamina or attack stat or lowers the opponent's defense that you target is an easy choice.
Moves that can shift opponents or yourself are pretty nice in more chaotic battles, with terrain and hazardous obstacles. Cornering something whose attacks you resist while your friends hammer it at range is good fun, as is punching enemies through trees and into lava and such.
Branching out into Special moves might work, too. Buizel/Floatzel have always been pretty competent mixed attackers, I've found.

Kalos is another region I know little about, but from the look of it it seems likely it will have enough variety of terrain to satisfy discrider, and of course if you have a favorite Pokemon that is not a natural inhabitant of the region you can count on me being flexible with the kinds of wild Pokemon that show up when you go looking for them.
Two players is a bit light, but I'm expecting a potential third, and you never know who could be putting things off to the last minute. I'll keep up the [Recruiting] tag while we work through the introductory scenes.

I'm not too beat up about not having like 8+ people making characters. I don't like turning people away and a three person party is my personal sweet spot for good interactions and spotlight sharing anyway, moreso when every character is going to quickly end up having a handful of subcharacters.

Jim's felt alone for a long time. His parents passed away in a boating accident when he was little, so he's spent most of his life living with his Aunt and Uncle. They had a small house on Akala Island, and Jim was certainly never neglected, but such events leave an indelible mark on a young man. Seeking a connection to his parents, who were both highly skilled trainers themselves, he applied to a Pokemon League. He carries a ragged old leather-bound diary, but doesn't write in it. He aspires to master what he calls the three elements.

I was strongly considering a Magikarp or Feebas starter, but when I started building it I realized it was going to be a lot like Volnoy. This is probably better anyway, plus it compliments the group better and I doubt I'll have much trouble picking up a Feebas or Magikarp later. In regards to region, I'm good with anything.

More to come in the way of background stuff; why Alex and EightOh aren't together at the moment, how Pidgey came to be named Pidgey, and what Alex's been up to in the past three years
Obviously I wanted to throw in Transform as either a move or an assist, but I'm gonna leave that at Marsh's discretion as to how that would actually work. Presumably Pidgey would keep their original typing and it would be more of a flavor thing?
e: oh hey Terrados!
I've switched around Alex's stats a bit so that there's a little distinction between him and James
Tommy, Pidgey can have another Resistance. You get as many as you do Weaknesses +2, so with three Weaknesses they should have five Resistances.
Also note that Pidgey's transformations won't be very convincing until they have an Assist (or Ability) to give it some mechanical oomph. Ditto-face in full effect, I imagine. We can probably work out a few options to make Pidgey play more like you'd expect a Ditto to play, if you'd like. Voltage doesn't support some of the weirder Pokemon concepts out of the box (though I'd love to take a stab at Shedinja sometime), but you can do some pretty crazy things with a well-written ability.
Could I just toss Transform in there as opposed to Psy Power? I mostly picked that because nothing else (besides runner, which sounds hilarious) felt right
I'd guess that Transforming could let you take on Opponent's types, but maybe leave your Weaknesses/Resistances the same so things don't get too crazy? Also:
Copying Style
Adds the last Move used by the target to the user's Movelist for the duration of the battle.
or something like that.
[Impressionist- Adds the last Move used by the target to the user's Movelist for the duration of the battle]
and
[Transform- Can take on the appearance and types of Pokemon or Objects the user can see]
Obviously the types bit doesn't apply to objects, I just have very fond memories of the first season of the anime during which a ditto, when instructed to turn into a dratini, turns into the book in which the dratini is pictured
What if I gave Pidgey
Impersonate - (Special/Copying/Normal)
Also, Pidgey's stats are too high for 15 XP.
Level 3 in a stat costs 2+3 XP to go through level 2 first and then to 3.
Or maybe I accidentally read two 3s in there.
Oops.
Looks fine.
What fortunate timing! Color me interested.
Hell, has it been that long?!
I think it was Kanto? I'm divorcing that Al from this Al given that, well. That Al built up experience and Volnoy became a beast, while we're all starting anew here.

I was fucking around with the stats earlier so you might have seen it while I was editing tbh
I was trying to figure out how to make it so that Pidgey could get three moves and keep charm while also not copying Volnoy's stats outright

Voltage: 2
Inventory: Notebook, Binoculars, Disposable Camera, Sunglasses, Reading glasses
Quirks: Writing a novella on her trip to becoming a Pokemon champion. As of the moment, most of it is just notes hastily written in her notebook.
Trainer Exp: 6
=============
Notes:
Physique being 2 is due to Beatrix's body being more resilient due to her numerous forays and skirmishes into Pinwheel forest as a young kid. This, coupled with having the benefit of attending self-defense classes, has made her more durable than meets the eye.
I was originally buffing Networking to 2 on account of being a Junior Detective (having contacts would prove essential). However, because of being a JUNIOR detective and the fact she eschews many (if not most) of her parents’ social networks to form her own one makes a lot more sense.
Creeped out by aggressive ghosts and ghost types.
Background:
After the loss of her father (in the line of duty) years ago, Beatrix had a time of remorse, the visits of Pinwheel being painful reminders of joyous times. It was only when she rescued a Murkrow at near death that she broke her stupor and realized just how short one’s life could be. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she started to train herself, determined to becoming a recognizable character in her own way. Having applied for the Pokemon challenge for years, she had finally been given the opportunity at taking a shot. With leaving nothing but a letter to her mother, Beatrix sets off with Moriarty, in the hopes of not just becoming a successful detective, but also a Pokemon Champion (oh, won’t that look good on a CV?)!
Description/Personality:
Her hair is long and wavy, ending mid torso. She wears glasses for many occasions. Sunglasses during either the day or reading glasses at night. Regardless, she will always carry a pair or two at all times.
Beatrix is a fervent follower of ‘do the right thing! Justice, Liberty and the Pokemon way!’ Her passion to follow her father’s example as a detective and her mother as a significant figure in the International Police circle has caused her to be a woman driven by boldness and ingenuity. This of course, contrasts strikingly with her companion Moriarty, who finds such idealism a bit grating. Nonetheless, she has earned respect from his end, for the Murkrow loves someone with that kind of gumption in life. The fact she's willing to get into scraps amuses him to no end either.

Moriarty was the proverbial runt of his former murder. After being chased off for messing up a number of pilfering attempts in pinwheel forest (all involving stealing as many 'shinies' the Murkrows could steal from unsuspecting tourists) Moriarty sets off on his own, pompously believing he could hoof it on his own in Pinwheel Forest. After a short amount of weeks, the Murkrow was in dire straits. His one wing injured. No food in his belly. And the worst of it all: Deciding to take on an ornery Venipede, leading to getting poisoned. Even his normally smug self realized the terrible situation he was in. When Beatrix finally found him (by accident, no less) and tend to his wounds, the Murkrow had hoped to find a suitable rube in her to enact his own schemes.
Alas, the moment Beatrix introduced him to the wonders of candy put all his plans to ruin, as he became hooked on the delicious confectioneries. Since then, Moriarty has stuck with Beatrix, thick as thieves. Though the Murkrow has pinned the blame of candy thefts many of times on the young girl, her insistence on protecting him has caused him to respect her persistence. In time, his own thefts had stopped, but he would still do the odd theft now and again. Just not, blame it on Beatrix (there were plenty of fall guys for such an occasion, after all). Though Beatrix's fearlessness and insistence on 'do the right thing' grated Moriarty to no end, the Murkrow softened and grew attached to the girl. Sure, he has plans on becoming the head Honchcrow of his own murder someday, but for now... it'll have to wait.
Notes:
Not sure which Assists I could have gone with. Intuit makes a lot of sense since Murkrow can copy words from the human language. Decided to go for a more sneaky kind of ‘mon, an eye in the sky scout for her detective skills.

Region wise, I’m happy with wherever the adventure's suited. Johto is still a favorite of mine (Gold/Heartgold my personal favorite of Pokemon games/remakes), but to venture forth into new territories (like Kalos and Aloha) is a neat idea too.
