More MH tidbit,
It's also the first title in the series to launch within the same release window worldwide when it goes on sale for the PS4 and XBox One in early 2018. The PS4 version will also reportedly receive some exclusive content. Sorry PC gamers, you'll still have to wait a bit as that platform won't see the game until "a later date".
So hey releasing worldwide at the same time. Nice change of pace.

I still don't really understand why Sony and Microsoft think they need E3. Seems like they could do their own conferences at different times of the year and get all the coverage to themselves for a couple of days. Even the Nintendo Directs get some decent coverage no matter when they are held.
Yeah. In an era where Twitch, YouTube, and Mixer (lawl) are things, sharing a weekend with competitors is a weird choice.

In a lot of ways this is what they did this year. E3 doesn't actually start until the 13th.
But yeah I agree with the sentiment.

It's a trade show. It's not just about showing gamers stuff . It's about stores, share holders and investors. Doing deals to get products on their platform or stocking their goods. Getting the press interested in covering their stuff while at the show.
That's why Sony and MS continue with it. Create a big buzz at the start to get those people interested then spend a few days doing the deals and getting the coverage.

its also why EA, who no longer attend E3, have their own show at the same time, in the same city.
That rumour always seemed plausible, just run through a super salty Nintendo fanboy filter where Sony are desperate for Japan and that it's being "streamlined" and "action and QTEs" for western audiences. Now it turns out it isn't even PS4 exclusive.
Anywho, Sony's show was weird. I wasn't a fan of the pacing, it seemed way too fast especially given the length they ended up going. They could've easily fit in another gameplay demo AND all the pre-show announcements and still been significantly shorter than Microsoft's conference. On top of that, I think they had three big announcements: Monster Hunter, Horizon: The Frozen Wilds and Shadow of the Colossus. But they failed to build their show around those announcements, so the entire thing kinda felt like it was thrown together at the last minute.
They still had a lot of great content, like the above three announcements, God of War, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Uncharted and Detroit, I just think they did a poor job putting everything together. Still better than Microsoft's show though, at least they have a good enough exclusive lineup that they don't need to fill a show up with 20 timed exclusive indies.
B-
Unless Nintendo knock it out of the park tomorrow morning, Ubisoft will end up having the best conference this year. Shit's crazy.
It's good to hear that while most of you disliked the VR stuff there was a universal like of Quill, the lead mouse character in Moss. I only bring that up because my good friend (former lead animator at Bungie) is animating everything you see in the game and his team was super excited to be in the Sony show.
I went over to his place to help playtest the E3 demo they are showing off. Found a bug or two that hadn't noticed and got they got them fixed. As for the game, let me say that I've only played a few VR games and wasn't wholly impressed. The coolest game I played was Keep Talking, and that didn't need VR.
Moss is pretty cool. You move and fight with Quill, but also interact with the environments to help her get around and puzzle solve. It felt extremely refreshing and didn't require a ton of movement and head spinning which is a big plus in my book. Everything in an area is laid out in front of you, with some movement left and right around the area. Nothing crazy.
Obviously I'm a bit biased since it's my friend's game, but I really do think they've got something nice working there. Glad to see it got a warm reception here at least...especially among all that VR hate fire.

They can show off a game, get mad hype and go to the guys at Best Buy, Walmart/Asda or Game or whatever our games are fucking hype man you should totally buy X units. That's part of why Sony showed VR on the mainstage. They want to create hype, have people to stock it and entice developers to support it.

E3 Is a tradeshow. It's to show investors what they're doing and how they're maximizing profits. For a long time, it had this mystical aura because it used to be the only place where you get to hear and see games that has yet to be announced. Do we, the consumers, need it when there's many consumer focus video game convention? No, not at all.
As for the bullshots. I enjoy a nice vertical slice of game play. I don't really care if the graphics are downgraded or if the final gameplay isn't 100% represented in the vertical slice. If Anthem pushes developers to make games in this direction then I'm all for it. Demon's Souls was far from perfect, but it was good enough to spawn one of my favorite genres.
The plan was to pump out Deus Ex sequels every couple of years, which is why MD was smaller in scope. But, reviews were mixed and it didn't sell as well as HR, so they shifted gears.

It was in the aftermath of Square Enix announcing that they'd picked up the Marvel license and were putting Eidos Montréal on a project for it... so, early February-ish? EDIT: Just checked. Hey, what's up with them making these VR side stories set in the Until Dawn universe that captures nothing about what people liked about that first game?
Everything is some weird Tales from Until Dawn stuff. Not sure how effective it is.

Now, with blogs and tweets and shit, it's entirely possible you in your underwear at 6 in the morning slurping cheerios will learn of some news before somebody with actual press credentials.
That's not the point of a trade show. The point is to sell your shit to people at BestBuy or Walmart, or for some developers to MS and Sony and BestBuy, etc, or justify yourself to investors. The concentration of news helps them do that. It's the same for all trade shows.
You can and will do deals throughout the year one at a time sure but if you don't bother to sell them your stuff when everyone is gathered for that specific purpose you fucked up. The least you have to do is make an impression so they remember it when it comes deal time.
edit:
To add to this. It's probably more important now than it ever has been for developers. There are so many games coming out now. You want to show Sony or MS your game this year so you can get on that god damned stage next year, or get a publisher to sign you and put you on their stage, so that you can be one of the games people remember from E3 next time.

I'd expect that most of the details of deals get worked out after E3 is over. The important thing is that with all the companies showing their latest and greatest you can get a feel for where the industry is at... and with everyone else's executives around you can lay the groundwork for those deals you want to work out later.
I wonder if Konami still had their quiet wing of guarded rooms in the actual trade area of the show.
Also, why are we assuming that people are taking any game play or trailer content at face value? Even the Destiny 2 snippets had a disclaimer that it was done on an approximation of PS4 Pro hardware. I doubt that if I play Anthem my experience will be like that at all. And I'm not just talking about the graphics.
I doubt anyone, especially here is going wow this will be a 1:1 experience from advert to reality when they say "I like the idea/concept that was shown."

This is true. Aside from drumming up media coverage, the "purpose" of E3 is to get the main buyers for retail chains in a room where you can tell them what they'll want to dedicate shelf space for this holiday season (and, less importantly, next holiday season). In the years since, buying power shifted somewhat from stores to individual user-based storefronts (Steam and whatnot), so the floor space went from just big publishers to publishers and distributors to publishers, distributors, and individual devs searching for press and maybe a publisher if they can't self-publish. Media is welcomed and encouraged, but in a way of "If I get them to say my games' names loud enough, the stores will come and ask me to sell my game instead of the other way around."
Case in point:
I've gone to over ten of these conventions, and on the main floor off to the side of Nintendo there's always been a space for some peripheral manufacturer. It's always the same one, and I can't remember the name (not a big one like MadCatz or such), but they'll have displays of third-party controllers, DS cases, charging stations, all non-game stuff. Nobody goes to them for interviews. They don't sell anything there. There's no big screen showing games in action. Just rows of game-related gear on the walls. And the thing is: for a company that does nothing that most people would care all that much about, their booth looks great and I'm sure they get most of their annual business from this show and GamesCom.

Agreed. People act like the areas being connected by loading screens is a good thing, when it's literally just a hanger-on from the PS2 days where they had to do that to make the game work. It's really sad that the series has languished for so long people are flipping out at the idea of outdated things being swept away.
I thought this year was generally disappointing all round and I think MS are in for a tough ride releasing a $500 console when there's a dearth of interesting looking games. Far Cry, Ass Creed, Gears, Forza etc it's the same old same old. Even Sony's show felt kind of lacking although I'm all for a remake of SotC

I imagine that's a miscommunication, and there's no VR support right now.
I said it in another thread, but Sony probably could have just uploaded all of those videos to youtube and sent out a playlist to all the outlets and have gotten 99% the same effect.
Agreed. People act like the areas being connected by loading screens is a good thing, when it's literally just a hanger-on from the PS2 days where they had to do that to make the game work. It's really sad that the series has languished for so long people are flipping out at the idea of outdated things being swept away.
