So, Microsoft and Sony's conference were hugely different from one another.
Microsoft had loads and loads of new stuff, including a platoon of indies, but very little that was exclusive. Well, exclusive to Xbox and PC, at any rate. I'm not counting all the timed exclusives. (And holy shit, timed exclusives are back with a vengeance.)
Sony showed much fewer games, including very few indies (was Undertale the only non-VR thing?). Most of it was exclusive, but very few of them were new.
Honestly both of them were slightly disappointing to me, though there's good stuff that showed well in them.
Very curious to see what Nintendo's going to do. They've already announced a bunch of Pokemon stuff and let Ubi handle Mario + Rabbids, so will we have room for a parade of surprises or will it mostly be Mario Odyssey?
Nintendo hasn't really given much of a shit about E3 for a while now, so they might very well just do some notes on Mario Odyssey and Animal Crossing and that's it. Better not get your hopes up.
@MNC Dover My wife was watching Sony's conference with me and Quill was the thing that got her the most excited by far. She used to do 3D animation and she was going nuts over the character's animations, particularly the expressiveness of his tail and ears. Also she was undergoing cute overload and so was I because HE'S AN ADVENTURE MOUSE WITH A LITTLE BACKPACK OH MY GOD LOOK AT HIS LITTLE BACKPACK
I was almost certain the game with the mouse was called "Moss"

Ah ok, must of missed where that was specified, way it sounded in the post I referenced sounded like game name was Quill, made me question just how tired I was last night while watching.

Sony really could have used some more hard release dates since they showed plenty of stuff we already knew about

I don't think it was specified during the show, MNC Dover told us 2 pages ago giving us inside information on the game because it's made by a friend of his.
I don't think Studio Ghibli can make anything that doesn't look cool. The problem with the first game was that it turned out to be as grindy as a pokemon game, not really the standard RPG. I don't mind leveling a set of characters for an RPG, but I really don't want to grind out levels for dozens of them.
I think Assassin's Creed Origins will have to be really fucking good for me to give a shit about that franchise anymore.
Same. I mean, I WANT to love the settings, but I just can't get into that series as a whole.
Unity broke me. The game was shit. I gave it about 4 hours before I turned it off and sent it back to Gamefly. I also tried it on the PC at release and it was so buggy I couldn't make it through any of the cutscenes.
Personally Sony won E3 for me because more of its games hit my desires.

- Horizon DLC
- Star Child

Generally, not a whole lot of surprised. They said that it'll be focused on Switch games launching this year, and there'll probably be a couple 2018 games in there as well. There will also be some reveals during the Treehouse segments afterwards, with one of them almost definitely being the 3DS remake of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. The Animal Crossing mobile game might also show up there.
Here's what games will definitely be shown:
Mario Odyssey - launching on November, probably the same day as Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
Fire Emblem Warriors - expect to see a handful of new characters and a look at some gameplay modes. Probably launching in October
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - new trailer shown, I'm guessing a December launch date
ARMS - ir launches on Friday so it won't be a huge focus, but they might show the first free DLC and announced when it'll be available
Splatoon 2 - launches next month, so probably not a big focus either. Just a general trailer with a look at new weapons, maps, etc
Pokken Tournament Deluxe - this might only be shown during the Treehouse segments since we just got a trailer last week
Mario + Rabbids - same as the above, might only be a Treehouse thing
What might show up:
Whatever Retro Studios has been working on - this will likely be Nintendo's one big surprise. Might be Metroid, though I think it'll be something entirely new
Pikmin 4 - Has supposedly been finished for a while and was likely moved from Wii U to Switch
Smash Bros - a port that combines the 3DS and Wii U versions has been rumored for ages, though with Pokken and ARMS coming this year, they might not want to launch another fighting game soon
Animal Crossing on Switch - too early for that. The team that did New Leaf kinda split up and went on to do Splatoon, Happy Home Designer, amiibo Festival and the mobile game. Probably an E3 2018 thing.

Hang on, is Studio Ghibli even involved this time? There doesn't seem to be any sign of Ghibli-made animated cutscenes, which makes me sad.

Also the combat just wasn't very exciting. Oh and the battle music was a bad choice. The song is incredible (I love strings) but man it did nothing to get me pumped up for a fight. Oh the VA needed help too... Actually does the first game allow you to use Japanese VA and English subtitles?
Also the fact that capturing the monsters using RNG was bad.

Is Destiny worth getting into this late if you've never played - as someone who doesn't have a lot of time for dungeons, etc. Single player friendly?
Until you get through all the single player content before the last expansion and realize you can't even play it unless you do multiplayer to gear up. I gave up once I saw the massive grind I had ahead of me once I finished the Taken King. It's a. Last until then though.

Ghibli is not involved in this one.
Didn't think so. Ah well, here's hoping they poached Joe Hisaishi for the music again -- lord knows he wasn't doing much during Ghibli's reorganization.
It's a trade show. It's not just about showing gamers stuff . It's about stores, share holders and investors. Doing deals to get products on their platform or stocking their goods. Getting the press interested in covering their stuff while at the show.
That's why Sony and MS continue with it. Create a big buzz at the start to get those people interested then spend a few days doing the deals and getting the coverage.
Sure, but trade shows had their purpose back in the days before the internet. You gathered the press. shareholders, and investors into one giant place and hocked your wares, because that was literally the only way to say, know and report all this news.
Now, with blogs and tweets and shit, it's entirely possible you in your underwear at 6 in the morning slurping cheerios will learn of some news before somebody with actual press credentials.
that's not how business is done though. trade shows are still a thing cause deals are made face to face. you're thinking of it as a consumer show cause that's the way we've been consditoned

If it's 30 minutes with 30 % fluff about Amiboos/minor DLC additions/digital downloads, and another basic iteration of Animal Crossing or Mario and Sonic 2020 Winter Olympics then only a really promising Retro Studios unveiling can save it from an E. If you keep it short, spare us from the talking please.

Well, the Nintendo conference apparently starts exactly the moment the class I tutor starts. I hope there's someplace to rewatch it afterwards.

Right. Professionally speaking, when I do conventions or "big events", it's about image projection and creating contacts. The actual "work" of the convention isn't the really important thing, it's the weeks ahead of and the weeks after it that matter. Especially if you're in America, it seems, people REALLY like meeting face to face. So the personal capital from the connections established are used throughout the year when you get into detail oriented follow ups.

When I saw the beginning to the trailer, I legit thought it was going to be a Redwall game. I admit I was a little disappointed when I found out it wasn't. Still cute as hell though.

You should be fine; I think the Direct's are all pre-recorded anyway. They just upload the video at 12pm; I don't think they are live shows.
That mouse has an adventure time grass sword.
All that food
and I've just now realized how badly I need a Long Patrol game in my life so thanks for that
I didn't know Joe Hisashi was behind the music for Ni No Kuni. Don't have time for the game but I might hunt down a soundtrack.
As @urahonky said it might not be the best soundtrack for a video game, but it's still some damn fine tunes and just oozes Ghibli goodness.
