Hm, well, tracking site said my package has been out for delivery since early this morning and it has yet to show up. Guess it'll be coming in tomorrow. Kinda lame, but oh well.

Better than what I'm stuck with.

Did either of the other games have cursing? I'm fine with it it just caught me by surprise when I heard a character exclaim "shit!"

    Um...

    ...

actually, I'm not sure? It's weird, but I can't think of a line from XC1 that used swearing, despite the eventual dark tone of the game.

I have a vague recollection of hearing Reyn say something I didn't know, looking it up, and discovering it was a Very British Swear.

Well if you wanna be technical, they only went "Oh sh..." So I imagine that's about as far as they'll go.

Yeah there is full cursing in this, for anyone who cares about that.

Did he? Man I must have glossed over that. I just remember the "Oh sh..." because of how obvious it was in the subtitles.

Probably Nintendo saw that and said atleast don't make the protagonist do it. Though he does say he wants to "Kick his arse" (I so enjoy the Britishness)

I wonder, is this the first Nintendo made game with the word shit or the like ?(I doubt they'll go any further)

Nintendo published sure, Bayonnetta for example but that wasn't a Nintendo studio.

Yeah, there's a short notification when you get your second blade that says something like "max engaged blades 1 -> 2" so I imagine you get the 3rd later.

Soo it's sounding like consensus is if you liked Xenoblade 1 and can put aside some really bad character designs that this game is good?

That sounds like I am buying it.

I'm in chapter 2, and so far I'm really enjoying it. It's not as grim or serious as XC1 was at the start. Don't get me wrong - serious stuff does happen, but it's offset by straight up goofiness played for laughs. It's Xenoblade poured through a Toonami filter.

I'm kinda torn on which vocal track I want to use. The English voices sound fine. As in I like how they sound normally to my ears but when they start doing anime shit all I can do is laugh and laugh. The voice director needs their ass beaten. If I switch to the JP track booya, I'm playing anime, but I lose out on understanding the ambient non-subtitled stuff

This annoyed the hell out of me in Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

I don't necessarily mind subs, but they need to sub everything. If they're not going to bother, than I'd rather have a dub, even if it's badly done.

    Whoooo

    Got to an open field!

Yeah, running around interacting with glowing things!

Oh wow, here's one in a lake!

Hey, why is that rainbow coloured piece of background unfurling its majestic wings and why has a bar popped up saying that a monster that's level... 60-something has engaged me on combat?

    Oh, a game over screen.

Finally picked up my copy of XCX again, after stalling about a year and a half ago.

Took me a minute, but I think I'm back into the swing of things, as far as combat goes. Spent some time level grinding to get ready for the boss fight that bottlenecked me last time, and to get the funds for non-crappy Skell frames.

Gotta say, it's fun doing random grind battles as a Mastermind with Irina also in the party. Mindjack and Servant Sacrifice all day long. Big enemies just instantly die, and I only increase my TP by doing this.

Still not sure what class combo I'll go with to the endgame; I hear that Dual Guns + Knife makes for a hilariously strong combo, but I'm also interested in the Beam Saber, if only because I know there's an attack which is just Monado Buster under a different name.

The voices are weird. I like Rex, he's not bad, but the few times he's had to seriously emote, he's come up short. He's already had a few moments where he's supposed to be screaming in rage, but the actor just doesn't pull it off. Nia sounds a touch too old for the character, but is otherwise fine. Pyra however has so far been absolutely amazing. In general though, the voice acting sounds like they were told to imitate the japanese track, with pauses and everything. Some S-E games with Cloud, like Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia, had this problem. Where he talks... like this. And... it's really... annoying. Maybe it's something I wouldn't notice if I turned off the subtitles, since I'm basically reading what they're going to say long before they say it.

Battles though... in the field fighting monsters it hasn't been bad. Everybody's always chatty, but that's been par for the course with these games. But now I'm in a dungeon with human enemies. They have 2 voice clips. "Think you can take me?" and "Don't forget me!". And they seem to be tied to fucking everything they do, because they just repeat it 10+ times a fight. And I also have the nopon party member as well, and a lot of his clips are peppered with "mehmehmeh". Battles here now have devolved into noise.

Rex's screams of rage are the obvious weakpoint of the VA so far, yeah. Nia is an absolute joy.

Having Elma and Lin forced on you through the entire main quest means you have to choose between taking advantage of soul voices or playing a build that's even remotely fun.

When you're just doing side quests and can bring whoever you want though, that's when the soul voice mechanic really opens up. L + Murderess + Phog = purple soul voices all day every day.

    About the Core Crystals.

Is there any reason to hold on to them (for example save them for future party members) or should I just use them as I get them?

That's the only reason I can think of. You can transfer Blades from one Driver to another, but apparently you need a really rare/expensive item to do it. That said, only rare crystals would be worth holding onto. The common ones really are common and the Blades you get from them aren't all that great anyway, so feel free to use them immediately.

Soul voices were a cool concept, but waiting around for your allies to shout which color to use got real old imo. It was a way more reactive playstyle compared to the more active skillspamming/rotation style in XC1.

It at least meshed well with the concept of waiting for secondary cooldowns on your artes.

I was able to get about 20 minutes in last night before it was way too late, buuut I think I'm pretty much sold. I was really worried that I would hate Rex from the promo stuff, but his design seems pretty normal in practice and I'm 100% on board for more silly British voice acting a la 1.

I am starting to see some of the complaints the reviewers had. There's not a true map that I can go to, if I want to find something I have to go to the fast travel map and look for it. Good luck to me if I haven't found a fast travel point close to it.

Also, the voices in combat are way too loud and it's nonstop. It's too much audio noise going on in combat, and the option I found to turn down voices in combat doesn't seem to do anything.

I like the actual gameplay here, it's just missing a lot of polish.

Battle narration volume is for the announcer that yells out things when you topple/excellent etc. I turned that off right away. The battle voices are mixed in with something like "in game voices" which I'm not sure if those are everywhere, obviously there's a cutscene voice option too but I imagine night/day transition announcements, new area discoveries etc are all tied into the battle voice option so.

Personally, I find it fine, except for maybe one area where enemies had like 2 voice clips and they repeated them. But beyond that it's pretty normal for a xenoblade game.

You can get rare blades from common crystals, fyi, it's just lower chance. Also I've found 2 Overdrive items just chilling in chests in towns so far, and ended up using one last night. They're rare but there's a few scattered about that didn't feel random at all.

I think I might wait on this until there is a sale or they patch in some QOL improvements. An actual map would be a good start.
