okay I just got this, played about an hour, and I know absolutely nothing about what I'm doing. I did a couple of side quests and am about to embark on the 'main quest' from what I guess is the opening hub
it's fun and feels incredibly deep I just also feel a bit aimless already
is there a beginners guide or just stuff I ought to know or anything? or am I 'safe' to just dive in and feel my way through? sorry I know this is sort of a weird question but I don't know enough to even know exactly what I'm trying to ask
I'm still not sure how to make my party members swap blades, so not sure if it's even worth it to put extra blades on someone like Nia for example. Just open everything on Rex I guess?
I'm not sure either, but I'm assuming it's automatic. I put an extra one on a character and it's been gaining WP so it must be getting used at some point.
If it IS automatic, I hope it's smart about when it swaps.
So for AI they're fairly smart about swapping. You also get WP for all weapons engaged, whether or not you swap to them. Anyway, back to the AI, generally if there's a combo coming up they'll switch. I've also seen them switch on their own without a combo going. It seems pretty smart? I haven't ever reached a level 3 combo and been like "damn Nia why don't you just switch????" fwiw.
Oh I see what you guys are talking about, I misread it earlier. Making them swap to other blades they own in the heat of battle, not changing ownership of blades between party members.

Early spoilers when you meet Tora that I liked.
Tora being outed as otaku garbage regarding Poppi and Pyra's dead judging stare was great and anime.
I managed to pull two rare blades so far, both of them tanks. I have some redhead guy with horns and an axe and a green birb girl that is oddly superior to him in every way.
Another handy thing. When I rested at an inn Pyra asked to go to a certain location. Looks like the characters do that to give you a push towards Heart to hearts you qualify for.
I don't know why anyone would use the japanese voice acting DLC and rob themselves of one of the most hilariously voiced games ever. Digging everything else about it too but christ is the VA entertaining.
There was a steam sig here. It's gone now.

I like how I'll EZ clap a boss fight only for the cutscene to act like I didn't just hand the boss a plate full of their own ass with all the trimmings.
I still can never manage to build all the way up to a level 3 combo. It takes such a long time to build affinity in combat, I'm not sure what I'm missing. I'm doing cancels too on most of my attacks, I can just never time everything the right way.
I just started chapter 3, fighting level 15 monsters.

Finch, (green little bird girl thing with a giant mallet) is a goddamn monster. I did some anime cutscene shit called final destruction or something with her where she throws the hammer into an explosion on some old Thor shit.
So I want to help you guys in the chapter mid 2+ times. Around that time, if you're not sidequesting up a storm, I think you'll find that enemies are becoming a bit damage spongey (or maybe it was just me?).
So lets talk how to maximize damage:
What I want to emphasize is you want to combine blade combos and driver combos to do maximum damage.
When I say maximum, I mean around level 25-30, I could do about 3-5k with a blade combo, BUT, if the enemy is toppled, I could do up to 20k. If they were launched, I did 140k.
By inflicting a blade comboed enemy with break/topple/launch/smash, you also get more time to make the combo happen and can have the effect last longer.
The more you set yourself up to link these things together, the bigger booms you can make. Don't forget that whatever element you end a combo on, the enemy gains liek 50%ish (I haven't mathed it at all) resistance to that element. The game will do a little tutorial on this stuff eventually, but you do get access to these mechanics immediately.
Finally, for chain attacks, and I'll put this in spoilers just in case people don't want to be spoiled on how they work in this game.
You want to do 2-3+ Level 3 combos before you chain attack. During the attacks if you break the elemental orbs that the blade combos add, you get another round of chain attack. One orb per round. Therefore, to maximize our damage here, we want to have each element and each element's opposite on as many people as possible, so we can make combos->then break orbs with the opposites. You can get some stupidly high damage figures this way. Chain attacks can do 150k+ at level 30 in a 3 round combo with 2 orbs broken. If you have a toppled/launched/smashed enemy in the mix, the duration of those effects does go down a little during the combo every time you do an action, so you can't just launch an enemy and then have the whole chain attack do damage unfortunately.

So I'm playing and the game just goes to a black screen but the music just keeps going. Hard crash, non-recoverable. I just lost about 3 hours of playtime...
How fucking difficult is it to put some kind of auto-save feature in the game? Like after you complete a quest? Are we back in the goddamn dark ages now where I have to save every 20 minutes for fear the game is just going to die?
I really don't have the fucking heart to keep going with this now. The last time I saved was
right before you have to do all the bullshit to get Poppi. But I also did like 4 sidequests in that town, got Poppi, watch a shit ton of cutscenes, went to the boat, rescued Nia, and was pretty much right at the end of the boat mission when I just walked up to some soldiers and the screen goes black, gg
I really am enjoying the game, but there were some ridiculously stupid design decisions made. Like how when you kill an enemy all of their items spill everywhere. If you're in battle with 5-6 enemies and you kill an enemy or one of your teammates do, you have to stop what you're doing and drag your ass around picking things up because the items disappear very quickly. WHY? Why was that a choice? Just put the fucking items in my inventory. What is the point?
And to go further on that, when I open a chest or get a collection point, I love that my items go flying in 5 directions, a lot of times off of cliff, gone forever. I remember when Titan Quest first came out it had the same problem and the devs actually released a patch to fix that problem.
When do I get an actual full party to travel with? I've gotten to the first city/open map area after the events of meeting Pyra and moved the story on a little bit from there.

The orbs are A) big and obvious and only appear when a level 3 chain combo finishes and the enemy is not dead.

Here's the SA post for anyone interested.
A Super Quick Guide To Big Numbers
There are 14 types of weapon, and each type has it's own auto-attack animation and timing. Each Weapon type has a total of 4 Arts, and you can select which 3 of them are active on the “Enhance Arts” menu.
Landing an auto attack builds up a tiny bit of Meter on all 3 arts, and also the Special Art. When an Art's meter is full, you can cast it. Casting an art in the middle of an attack animation will award a larger amount a larger amount of meter than the auto-attack normally would (this is known in-game as “cancelling an auto-attack”). Casting it during the 'final' attack of the animation cycle will award even more meter again.
-
Driver Combos
Your A button is always Special Art, and inflicts damage based on the element of your weapon. You can activate it as soon as it fills to launch a Level 1 Special Art, or let it continue to build through to Level 3. Once it maxes out at Level 3, the Special meter stops charging, and can only reach Level 4 by standing close enough to your Blade that the umbilical chord connecting you begins to glow.
In Xenoblade 2, BIG NUMBERS are achieved by performing Special Arts in sequence, to create a Driver Combo. If you play as Rex, equip Pyra, and cast a Level 1 Special art. Rex will cast a Fire-based Special Art (called Heat), and begin the combo. You should now see a little table appear in the top right of the screen : The table shows the four possible Driver Combos that the party can now complete.
#1 : Fire – Fire – Fire (Seal Self Destruct)
#2 : Fire – Fire – Earth (Seal Affinity Down)
#3 : Fire – Water – Fire (Seal Self Destruct)
#4 : Fire – Water – Ice (Seal Shackle Blade)
Assuming you have Mia in your party, and few Blades to choose from, Combo #3 is the easiest one to aim for. To pull off this combo, we need to begin with a Fire-based Special Art (which we've done), and follow it up for a Level 2 Special Art (Water), and finish with a Level 3 Special Art (Fire). You'll also see a bar appear in the not right, with the name of the Special Art (in this case, Heat) appearing on it. This bar represents the amount of time you have to cast the next Special Art in the combo.
Assuming Mia has her default Blade equipped, her Avatar will pop up in the middle of the screen, along with the name of a Special Art. This means she wants to cast that Special Art in order to continue the combo, and is currently trying to build meter, in order to cast it. When she has enough meter, an “LZ” or “RZ” button prompt will appear next to her name. Pressing the relevant button will cast her Special Art, and continue the combo.
If all goes well, the Heat bar will be replaced by a new bar representing the spell Mia cast, and the table in the top-right will change, to show that Combo #1 and Combo #2 are off the table, and the party needs to cast a Fire or Ice Special Art, in order to pull off a Driver Combo. In theory, Rex should be able to build up a Level 3 or Level 4 meter in time, and can use that to cast 'Steam Explosion', and make BIG NUMBERS appear.
Your party members won't blow their Special Arts until you tell them to, but if at any point you cast a Special Art which is too low-level to advance the combo, then it just won't advance, and you'll have to start again from scratch.
Whenever a party member's avatar pops up in the relevant spot on-screen, it means they have the correct Blade equipped to perform the next stage of a possible Driver Combo, and the ZL/ZR prompt means they have enough bar to execute the Special Art right now. If the avatar isn't showing, then it means the weapon they currently have equipped cannot participate in the current combo. When you have no combo currently on-going, they should both pop up on-screen, and you can actually use the ZL/ZR buttons to command them to cast Level 1 Special Arts, in order to begin completely different Driver Combos. As the game gets going, the possibilities become ridiculous, and the bonus effects associated with each Driver combo (such as sealing arts) becomes a really big deal.
Also I vote that info like this can maybe be put in the OP? The game seems keen on telling you once then trying to sell this information back to you at a premium which is lol.

Question: Chain attack is when you have those three bars in the top left full and supposedly press + to activate it? I've done this before and got nothing so I'm gonna assume it only functions when what you're fighting has orb bullshit floating around it Yeah?
Bad news: it's tedious as helllllllll. The only reason it was remotely not tedious is I thought you had to buy a max inventory to get shop deeds so I had 5 billion food already.

Rex really doesn't like asking questions, does he?
This is the absolute worst part of any anime game. They will sit there and have this internal monologue about how they wonder this or that about someone else and you're like "JUST ASK THEM YOU ANUS. I THE PLAYER WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS TOO." But you know the answers are going to be part of some major plot twist halfway through the game at an emotional moment and a bunch of shit could've been avoided if you just knew earlier.
Ok I got a question about a potential sidequest thing...this farmer in Gormott has a baby ardun in the pasture,
you talk to him and he says "normally ardun have multiple babies but this guy is an only child, hey maybe you drivers could feed him sometimes, it'd be a nice change from fighting all the time huh?" And now the baby has a little quest marker on top of him. I can't interact with him in any way, other than the fact that he's shown as level 1, so I can attack and kill him, and then the farmer just says "oh you slaughtered him huh, maybe you wanted his horns or whatever, oh well we can always breed more ardun but I won't ask people to feed them in the future." I reloaded because I assume that was the wrong move. What the heck am I supposed to do?
EDIT: Immediately figured it out. Farmer didn't have a star by his dialogue box, but he had more to say for the sake of the quest.
I don't understand the faith, bravery, etc things, really. I only really notice it when I open a core crystal. Is there any tactics to using core crystals. Like if I open a new rare one, is it best to pump up one of those stats as high as I can with boosters, or what?
