So I’m in that early mission where Fiora’s taking dinner to Shulk, and I decided to fight an enemy or two for a side quest. When I used Power Smash on an enemy, Fiora said “The electromagnetic tempest will swallow you!”
Which is definitely not a battle quote she should be using at this point of the game, haha.
I'm not a fan of how I need to move my thumb off the left stick to the arrow buttons to move through the combat menus. The controller layout makes it just awkward enough to be a distraction during fights. Maybe I'll play docked instead so I can use my PS4 controller.

Are we talking about an in-game option, or the Switch’s ability to remind keys in general?

They totally give away that she's not sticking around in this version. If you look at her costume choices menu there's only enough spaces as there is gear from the beginning of Colony 9, whereas Reyn and Shulk have their full list of ??????? spaces for things you haven't gotten.

It was obvious before when you noticed that all her knives looked exactly the same.
What neither version spoils is that she'll be coming back.

Also, there’s gear for sale in Colony 9 that I don’t remember being there in the original game (the stuff made by a dragon-obsessed artist). It’s just Medium armour, but Fiora can’t equip it.
To a newcomer, you could perhaps explain it as being gender-locked, like the bikini armor. But the real reason is probably that they didn’t see a need to make new armour models specifically for chapter 1 Fiora.
Oh yeah that review is hilariously bad. They dubbed over it and reissued, but the original video review pronounced "Reyn" as "Rain", and just called Dunban "Duncan". Even more puzzling, after going back and dubbing over those stupid mistakes, they still call Dunban "Dunbon" so they are just very bad at this. The game has voiceovers! It's not that hard to get the pronunciation of Dunban right when they say it like 20 times in the first hour.
Dangit, I put a lot of time into this when I first got a Switch, but it got so long in the tooth I drifted away. If I come back now, I'll need to start fresh, but there's an updated version. Argh. Shades of P5.

About Reyn: how is it pronounced? English is my second language and I can tell they're not pronouncing "rain", but I also cannot quite figure out how they are pronouncing it. Can someone spell it out phonetically for me?

It seems like there's some confusion going on -- I was quoting an IGN video review, narrated by an American man, that horribly mispronounced Reyn's name (as well as calling Dunban "Duncan"). They pronounced it like an American pronounces "Rain", which is clearly and obviously not how it is said in the game at all, and is in no way a correct pronunciation for an American who has played through the game, or played any significant time at all. It wasn't an accent thing; it's IGN being bad and having someone narrate the review that didn't write the review or play the game. They made several other pretty obvious mistakes, and so I brought that up to mention that their video review is just very very bad.

It should be pronounced "Rhine" like the river. Which is what the katakana is, Ra-i-n.

To be fair, they said Reyn a number of times in the first 10-15 minutes of the game, so you didn't need to play much of the game to have that down.

Definitely! It's been pointed out that they almost certainly just have a different person narrating the reviews because of that. Which is fine if you're getting the delivery down, but not so much in this case. We have at least 5 memes about Reyn shouting his name over and over and over at us in combat throughout the course of the very long game -- really, all you need is about 30 seconds of combat to be way way way too familiar with how to pronounce Reyn, whether you want to know or not.
Meanwhile Reyn is very clearly pronouncing "Wild Down" as "Wild Dune". So there is some very clear and heavy accenting going on. I see no reason to shit on someone because they're parsing the name as "Rain".
Shit, I've always called him "Rain". I didn't know that "Reyn time" was supposed to be some rhyming joke. It also works as something ridiculously silly a kinda meathead like Reyn would say.

“Reyn Time” is something Reyn says, actually. He says it a lot; because it’s both his quote for his Talent Gauge maxing out (“Now it’s Reyn Time!”) and something he can say when it’s his turn in a Chain attack (“Yeah! Reyn Time!”)
Hey, is there a reliable way to trigger weather and I'm spacing it, or is it just random? Do I need to skip travel to another zone entirely or can changing time ever trigger it? It's been awhile. I could look this up but I'm already here
EDIT: you can change the time apparently. Wish it were that straight forward to resummon a unique. EDIT EDIT: nevermind I just didn't realize that violent cow ran so far across the zone. yay for quest tracking!

change between 18 and 19 until you get the desired weather
Did they always launch right into cutscenes the instant you got the killing blow on a boss? I can't remember.
I was fighting a giant spider, not really paying attention to it's health apart from I know it was pretty low, then suddenly it's all over let's talk about how to leave.
I'd like to at least see it keel over.

Any recommendations for original vs arranged OST for a first timer?
I'd say original, but that's speaking as a long-time player and mostly based on the music in one early cutscene where I though the original was better.
Arranged has mostly been fine for me otherwise, and I doubt that anyone who hasn't heard the original is going to object.
Original is perfectly viable though, it doesn't sound dated or anything.
Not much of a spoiler but the name of an early-ish boss fight mentioned so putting it in tags.
Whoever sound mixed the in-combat voice lines for Xord in the ether mines needs to be beaten with a sock full of batteries.
I don't think I've ever had anything so unpleasant assault my ears. I don't remember it from the original game, but in the remaster, the volume feels like it's twice what it should be for the rest of the game, and the distortion and voice in general are so unpleasant that it just made the entire fight a misery =p.

I feel like the original game was the same, because
Xord was always a super annoying asshole. The colony 6 part of the game is prooobably my least favorite part, and I'm working through it right now. The party composition isn't the most fun one, and the three things that stand out the most from the original are
1) Xord yelling a lot with his very loud and thick accent for like 5 hours.
2) JuJu being the worst and getting captured over and over again
3) Sharla trying really hard to convince herself that Reyn is totally Gadolt, with Reyn realizing this but ultimately just giving in because hey substitute Gadolt is an easy in with his lady.

Agreed on all points.
I didn't find Xor annoying before other than just his attitude, but he was such an audible assault to my ears this time. I'll be curious if it jumps out at you when you get there this time.
Also, the first time I played the game, I didn't get much farther than I am now and I never changed from my default party. I hadn't planned to this time either but maybe I will switch it up after seeing you mentioned the composition isn't the most fun!
I think I just gave in at the time. "Gotta have Shulk, need a healer, and I already have a tank so I'll just stick it out."
Someone said the combat was a little less technically complex than XBC 2, but one thing I haven't seen, is about how many times per minute are you hitting abilities vs auto attacking? It looks like it is indeed MMO -like in this regard, maybe to the tune of 1 every 2 seconds, if not early on then by the mid game?

It is not at all a common name in English, and the pronunciation in English is pretty much "Whatever that voice actor decided it's going to be."
So any version is correct.
If that makes sense.

If any game could use an "MP3" player option like FFXV had, it's the Xenoblade games.
EDIT: yeah, maybe I shouldn't have left Colony 9 at level 24. I accept no responsibility for this problem.
Fortunately Gaur Plains music is almost as satisfactory.
