Spoilers about an NPC I met in the forest, a gameplay mechanic, and a very minor Xenoblade 2 comment.
I am as far as I've ever gotten in Xenoblade 1 and just reached Makna Forest.
1 - Wow, I am always impressed by the scale of stuff in this game. I jumped off the ledge for fun because I just knew that huge sea WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY below was an instant death but...nope. A whole exploreable area. Crazy.
2 - I just met Alvis and I noticed he had a necklace on that looks very much like the pendant that is on the Aegis' chest in Xenoblade 2. Is there a connection there? I only vaguely recall the ending of XB2 and a lot of the connect from XB1 was lost on me since I'd never gotten far in it.
3 - The new 'spike' mechanic, on paper, sounds like something I'm not going to enjoy. I hope I am wrong about that!
Also, thanks for some of the
About #2:
The necklace is a new addition to the Definitive Edition. In the original the necklace just had a key on it. It's actually a lifepod from Xenoblade Chronicles X, which I believe XC2 was also referencing with that.
AFAIK it's just an easter egg, like the Monado hairpin in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
(also I really need to effin' beat XC2 at some point... I never got very far in it which is a shame)
Actually that change is a direct connection to Xenoblade 2. Spoilers from the end of Xenoblade 2 within:
There were three Aegis' made by the Architect. Ontos, Logos (Who was Malos), and Pnuema (Who was Mythra/Pyra). It explained that Ontos triggered a 'space-time transition effect' and disappeared. It was always speculated that Ontos was Alvis, but with the Definitive Edition, the change to his model pretty much solidified it. Instead of the key from before, he now has his core crystal attached to him. This also works with the fact that the Architect is stuck between dimensions, with his evil half taking the form of Zanza in Shulk's dimension. So the third Aegis, Ontos, disappeared into Shulk's dimension and lived among that world as Alvis.
Oooh that is awesome info. Looking forward to playing more!
And I'll prob have to play XC2 again after this =p.

This shape, or a variation of it, appeared in all Xeno games. It's almost certainly a reference to Arthur C. Clarke's black monoliths from the Space Odyssey series. They even named the company, Monlithsoft, after these recurring thematic objects.

On Easter eggs in the games:
The Monado has a second appearance in XCX as the "sword of legendariness", an ancient and powerful Nopon artifact (it looks like a roughly made plush toy). Again, just a callback in terms of shape.
Oh I didn't know there was actually a connection between the games. I REALLY need to finish XC2... blah
One last spoiler for the connection between games:
During the scene when you find the Architect and are talking to him at the end of Xenoblade 2, you actually hear Shulk through the dimensional portal during his fight with Zanza at the end: "Today, we use our power to fell a god, and then seize our destiny!" Even before they confirmed the Alvis stuff, hearing Shulk through the Dimensional Gate was awesome and chilling.

Late game spoilers: seriously, this is Final Act stuff.
Whats funny about Alcamoth speculation is that the thing giving every sidequest a timer isn’t even the thing you’d expect it to be. You’d expect the Mechon attack. Not... that.
Wasn't there something you can trade/overtrade for in the refugee camp that's both needed and very hard to come by later on? I can't remember if it's for a restoration thing or a quest, but I can't find any more detail about it.
I just remember looking for this item later on, then finding things online saying 'oh yes this is easy to get early in the game, make sure you do it before you move people out of the camp', and I was very annoyed.
Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

Probably, that sounds right but who knows. At least this version makes trading super transparent.
I wonder if you can still trade for Mumkar's claws from like that one NPC who is only in a certain place for a little bit and their trades in that place are different

Looking at this list, the only thing I can see is a light rain element, which drops from those elements on the Bionis Leg during a rainstorm. You can only trade it from the refugee camp. Personally I didn't find it that hard to get. Getting rain is fairly easy, just keep changing the time from day to night until it does, and the drop didn't seem too rare.
Anything for a quest though, I figure is pretty safe since the game now marks it right on the map for you. Annoyingly it's the colony restoration items that don't get this benefit, but again as far as the refugee camp is concerned, I think it's just that one item.
I'll add this though. If you don't have a kneecap rock from Tephra Cave, you can get one from Werner... before you invite him to Colony 6.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
What's the earliest you can get Shulk's 4 Skill Tree from the Colony 9 quest? I think I'm roadblocked with the quest that requires high affinity with two female party members but I keep seeing people talking about how its possible to get his 4th Tree by Satori Marsh.
I actually just got it after posting that from wandering around and just trying to talk to different people at different times. For all the crap quests Xenoblade has in its numerous Monster Slaying and Item Collecting quests there are still so many good quests that change the nature of the settlements and the relationships between people. I just had to do a round of talking to people after finishing up the last quests I did for Colony 9 to see what everyone thought of the results.
I'm ok with the throwaway quests you first get in an area, mostly because they act as something to go after while you're doing other things. Which is why it's appreciated that the ones for non-town areas are available right away when you get to a new zone.

I just got it too; is there something in it that is notably important to get asap?
Unrelated, I ironically forgot "forget-you-not". I recalled that there were one or two collection items that were frustratingly difficult to get, but I just forgot the specific one. EDIT: there's a quest that needs two later, iirc, so maybe I should just wait? Hrm. EDIT2: just got one, no vision, so maybe that's a colony thing so no markers I guess?
EDIT: hell, I just now remembered "don't forget me!" from XC2. How deep does this thing go?
Reached the Bionis Leg yesterday. Still one of my favorite areas in a game. The place is huge and gorgeous, and that music.
Also, the time trials are a nice idea. I like the challenge, and getting cosmetic items is nice.
The restricted trials can be pretty tricky. The Dunban one, you kinda need to remember that mechon have to be toppled first to damage them. So the game is to have everybody attack the trash while Dunban attacks the mechon (cuz he's got the anti mechon sword), then when topple is up switch to it and burn it down.
I also wish the costumes were more crazy. I mean barring some possible ones later, so far they all just seem to be resort swim/loungewear. Though Shulk in a snorkel and flippers does look pretty neat.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Ya once you find each landmark as well as each location that is named on the map then the entire map will fill itself in. You don't need to swim the entire Eryth Sea, just hit up the important bits.

Riki gets a pineapple crown.
Which I imagine pairs perfectly with his spike ball armor look.
Once you find each area the fog of war dissipates.
Unless changed?
It does indeed. some areas (dunno about Eryth) have sections that you can't access till much later though.
I've managed to resist that urge this time around. As fun as I remember swimming all around the waterfall in Makna for several hours, I'll pass this time around.
This isn't breaking news, but the quest tracking makes doing sidequests dramatically less mind numbing this time around. Best new feature IMO, with the general UI updates in second.
Also, I'm probably the only one who didn't realize this, but if you Expert Mode down to the level of whatever you're currently fighting, you get substantially more AP/SP/XP per kill than if you just fight at whatever level you happen to be at. Running around overleveled is great for not stopping every 5 seconds for aggro, but, assuming your party allows you to drop down enough, it's worth it. And it seems like you keep your higher level arts/skills too? win/win. I wish that occurred to me several regions ago, even when I had expert mode pointed out to me (I was thinking it would only just make things more challenging, I didn't think about the other aspects of rewards).
Yeah, level down for trash, level up for bosses or uniques you don't want to deal with.
Playing around with the party more than I did on the original. Shulk/Reyn/Dunban is great fun - single enemies just get toppled for days it's so unfair. Multiple enemies just get soaked for ages by having double tanks.
Fun fact that topple/daze still keep the prerequisite status present (but the timer is paused) - this means a toppled enemy can be toppled again to extend the timer.
Reyn: Shulk, if you ever see a vision of the future, just tell me no matter what!
Also Reyn: What Shulk? You're saying there was this guy just here? Named Alvis? You're imagining things!
Is the "best" method to raise affinity really just locking an enemy out of reach and encouraging constantly? I was trying to look up a good way and that seems like the only real suggestion, even thot the DE made it so enemies will retreat if they haven't been hit in 30s (or hit you?).
I need to get up Sharla/melias affinity for a quest.
I guess I could spam the gifts I have, but they don't give much and I don't really have that many. It's kinda silly that giving a gift doesn't really give more affinity per gift than encouraging, at least in the same relative time.
What I did was just use them both exclusively to clear Side quests. Clearing Frontier Village with them as soon as I got there gave me enough Affinity to clear Paola's quest. Also, spamming chain attacks on every opportunity.
Accepting and turning in quests with desired character in front to accumulate affinity with desired party members. Dont just leave Shulk as lead. It's a decent way to gain affinity passively out of combat.

- Miniature glowing colored rectangular monoliths with small points appear as the intact Trinity Processor Cores in Xenoblade Chronicles 2
- The XC2 trinity processor core shape appears as Alvis' necklace in Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, replacing the key from the original
An addendum:
I'm not entirely sure that Alvis/Ontos is an Aegis proper, but his "core crystal" is definitely one of the cores/AI from the Trinity Processor that was designed to maintain the Conduit. The Architect created the Aegis Blades with the two remaining cores after the experiment was activated and Ontos vanished.
Despite that, something that is funny in hindsight about the Makna forest cutscene with Alvis is when he uses Monado Purge and tosses the Monado back to Shulk like a blade combo in XC2. Shulk basically does the same thing in XC2 with his Lv.1 Blade Special (Monado Purge).
Regarding the first point, the appearance Alvis takes after you kill Zanza is similar to the Wave Existence and U-DO in Gears/Saga. Given that Alvis might be the closest thing to a god in Xenoblade he might very well be completely aware of what the Architect did with the remaining two cores, considering that the Architect was aware of his impending death when Zanza was slain.
Baseless speculation that would amuse the hell out of me if it came true in XCX2 in light of the above (WARNING: XCX ending spoilers):
Despite probably not being an Aegis, Alvis/Ontos is the reason why the mimeosomes are still up and running despite all the damage to the Lifehold Core. The consciousness of the BLADEs and NLA citizens were possibly whisked away to what is essentially another computer before the core was destroyed.
