The best known thing about Magik is his almost uncomfortable obsession with laser weaponry. He has spent numerous personal work hours customizing his Awesome, call-sign "BACKDRAFT", replacing the small laser and PPCs with 4 Torso Mounted Large Lasers, and replacing the right arm with a second battlefist actuator. *I know this won't be representative in game* The other Oosiks are comfortable letting him tinker away, and usually have a pool running on how long until the next time he shocks, burns, or otherwise injures himself while working.
Has no one devised a way to input custom portraits yet?
The modders have, but it's a middling pain-in-the-ass to add new assets into the game's structure.
Awww. That's a shame. I always liked how games like Pillars of Eternity or Temple of Elemental Evil was as simple as dumping some appropriately sized pngs in a specific folder.
Keep in mind, this is still just the first beta; the fact that we can mod anything in is a delightful surprise. I wouldn't be shocked if HBS gave us an easier way to do these sorts of things once the real product gets here.
Magic: What was that Timberwolf-D build you made a week or 2 ago? Left the 2 ER PPCs, but switched out for LRMs? Did you ever decide on 4x 5 LRMs or 2x 10 LRMSs was better? Went back through the thread and couldn't find it.
Also, does anyone know any good mechs that pair an ECM with some long range damage? Currently my 2 favorite Mechs to play are a Raven with 2 ERLL and a Shadowcat with 2LPL. I went digging around but I can't find a way to search for ECM mechs.

Originally a Hunchback pilot, Beorn is a true space viking. (Or so he claims.) He has been known to hang "his families" battle ax behind his seat in the cockpit and drink from a large mead horn. All we know is the horn smells of mech coolant and Nips swears he bought the ax at a tourist flee market on Nox while they were on leave 2 deployments back. Several of the older OOSIKs swear he's not even from the FRR but actually an immigrant. Originally a 4SP pilot in all hunchback medium lance, an unfortunate incident involving friendly fire from a fellow OOSIK 4P's lunchbox cored his rear while they were engaged against a heavy lance. After the engagement the techs pulled together a franken-Jagger from the remnants of the destroyed hostile lance and an incredible amount of swearing. He's know to rush in space shotguns blasting crying "Döda dem alla" or Kill Them All!

I prefer ERPPCs on my Shadowcat.
You can do a Hellbringer with 4 ERLLs, and one of the Stalkers has ECM and high energy mounts.
Artic Cheetah can be similarly fit as the Raven.
One of the Maruader IICs has ECM, but I'm not sure if that one has high mounts.

I have been running the ECM Phoenix Hawk, with an ERPPC in the shoulder for fast poking and running, and 3x MLAS & 2x MG in the arms for any kind of brawling.
It is a true frankenbuild, where you want to hang with the heavies / assaults, providing ECM cover and keep poking with ERPPC snapshots, then use your lasers and MG on anything that tries to rush you.
It also works very well as a solo sniper, with ECM preventing easy spotting combined with the high shoulder mount and instant projectile of the PPC.

The Cicada 3M is a pretty often overlooked ECM mech. You can load it up with PPCs or 3 ERLL's like a Raven. I like using the UAC5 and MLs for long range plinking and midrange firefighting. A UAC10 build with the new tech will probably be a lot of fun, but you won't likely have much weight for ammo.
The Cyclops 11-P is another one I like. The energy hardpoints are too low to use well at long range, but the ballistics are nice, high and are begging for UAC5's and an LFE although regular AC5's work well enough. Dual Light Gauss might do something unique if PGI gives it better refire than a full Gauss.

That video brought back nightmares of the Cataphracts being in MWO and scary... Although I'm happy to see that models are mostly in the beta and that I would be tempted to pick them in the real game just because they really are a good mech.
The one thing I have to keep on remembering when I play BT is that it is a tabletop game again. For some reason after playing computer versions of the game and now MWO that I turned off the whole turn-based part of my brain. Back then I could play any tabletop game and somehow imagine how the dice battles played out in real time. Whole turns actually only being seconds or minutes in real time. Then I got spoiled with computer games and suddenly my brain turned off all that imagination. So when I play BT I sit there confused why the mech (who is now standing still) can't hit the other mech, which is only one space away, to save their life. But in real time that mech just ran up to where the enemy mech might have been, or the enemy mech just got there, and they're trying to snap off a quick shot without stopping. Which all of us can agree we have made a bad shot in MWO once in a while.
It is just funny to me how lazy my imagination has become thanks to the current games.

I've been buying more table top stuff lately and getting back into books (even physical books). So yeah, rekindling my imagination again. Funny that my generation was introduced to the gaming console and was a mix of gaming and table top growing up. Then having this happen to my old brain... Someone needs to do a study on this!
I'm really looking forward to the new Battletech game. I played MWO for a very brief period, but found I prefer the more turn based approaches. I've purchased a fair number of the books and map packs for the tabletop, but sadly have no one to play with.
Is there any idea when the game will be released other than 'latter in 2017'? Is the $60 preorder the best way to get Beta access so I can play around with the game?

Yeah, they are still baking it from the last message to all of us beta backers. If you really can't wait for them to launch the game, yeah the backer level to get the beta is the only way.

Today's video is brought to you by @Betsuni, who gave a thumbs-down to all the gladiators in his personal arena.
Description: Through some combination of guts, instinct and dumb luck, Lonenut has managed to earn a few credits with the OOSIKS. He has a penchant for getting caught out of position and too close to his opponents, which has resulted in learning quite a few tricks about how to brawl one’s way back to cover, redlining heat and close to critical. Enough fuck-ups like this and you eventually get a reputation as someone who seems to know what he’s doing.
\\MECH OF CHOICE\\ COMMANDO-3A, modified w/ ecm, larger engine, two stk-2 srms, and 2 medium lasers. (Do the best you can nips, its the old mwo build we used)
One of the more aggressive light pilots, NotoriusBEN uses speed and daring to get his mech into position to flank enemy lights and mediums, hit them hard, and force the enemy to look at him while friendly heavies tear them apart. No slouch in a stand up fight, he has several confirmed kills well above his weight class. He doesnt use jump jets if he can help it. "If I wanted to fly, I would have put wings on the damn thing."
So wait, this game allows a lot of modding yes? is it possible to pull up MW4merc portraits and insert them?
It's pretty open to modding, yeah. It's possible to add new pilots with their own portraits, but not the most fun thing.
#1 Editing an existing pilot file is trivial.
#2 Adding a new pilot to the roster is doable, and only requires creating a new unique Pilot file and editing it into the manifest file.
#3 Adding the portrait requires adding another file to the folder structure, then editing both files in #2 to recognize the portrait.
It also requires that the portraits be 256x256 pixel transparent PNGs, which is another step, and why I haven't bothered dinking around with it yet.

Tukayyid is the newly-assigned Capital for the Free Rasalhague Republic, but due to its position and state within the Inner Sphere is not eligible for counting toward the Clan Victory Condition.
Since I never followed BT after the Clan invasion, is this in the timeline? Or is this PGI's move to keep the FRR alive since didn't they go away?

Up until they merged with the Ghost Bears, I do believe the government was relocated to Tukayyid after the truce. But the merger was in-progress by the time of the Civil War, I think.
Edit: The sarna article is written in a somewhat confusing way. The GB's left the Clan homeworlds in 3060 and began a more full integration with the worlds of their occupation zone. But the rump-state of Rasalhague didn't rejoin them until during the Jihad in 3070, with things not being finalized until 3103.
Edit 2: the sarna article for the FRR doesn't talk about the capital, but looking at the maps, they moved it to Orestes in the very 'south-western' tip of what was left after the truce at Tukayyid. And eventually under the Dominion it was returned to Rasalhague (well, except the clan stuff which stayed on Alshain).
the FRR is basically defunct as of the Clan invasions. They were tiny to begin with, basically being a sliver between the Lyran Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine.
Clan Wolf and Ghost Bear drove really fucking hard into them, leaving the FRR with like... 5-10% of its worlds and they've never really recovered. They are like the St. Ives Compact now, living off the good graces of everyone else because they are a buffer zone.
Tukayyid has kinda of a weird status after the invasions. The inhabitants were pulled offworld for the Clan Battle, and didn't want to go back and clean up the mess, so it still belongs to FRR, but ComStar runs it because they said yea, we'll clean up. We are also gonna put a couple war colleges here as well because reasons.

Something I've always wondered about is how accurate is the IS map relative to astronomical charts? I mean, a lot of systems are named after real stars. Are the distances and relative positions roughly similar?
I have to say that I like that PGI finally hired someone to do balance changes, and they are willing to do frequent small changes instead of huge cluster fucks every couple years.
