Something I've always wondered about is how accurate is the IS map relative to astronomical charts? I mean, a lot of systems are named after real stars. Are the distances and relative positions roughly similar?
probably not at all, since the earth is at the center

Well, I mean, it's not at the center of anything but how far people have explored/settled. North on the map is towards the center of the galaxy, etc.
I'd be surprised if it's in any way accurate besides reusing some actual star names, but I don't know if anyone's ever checked it.
Thanks guys for the information on the FRR being plopped down where they are in the game. I know you all have mentioned that the FRR merged with CGB so was curious.
e: wait Nova Cats count as Jaguars? Pssh, nevermind.
You and @Erlkönig probably will become the new "Alt Iron Oosiks" in Nova Cats.
Hmm...seeing as I'm probably the only slightly-active Iron Oosik around (been taking a break from the game until NuTech shows up), that whole "Alt" bit might not be needed :P

Earth is at the centre of the Inner Sphere which is pretty explicitly not the centre of the galaxy.
From sarna.net:
The only reason Terra is treated as the centre of the universe because humans lol and humanity has fucked up bad enough that everything is defined (or was defined) in relation to where HPG beacons were, and (some exceptions aside), they weren't really making any more of them.
even on Earth, empires treated themselves as the center of the known world because yea, you tend to do that when you record your maps and you don't have a common point of reckoning.
looking at maps from Egypt, China, Rome from the 2000BC to about 700AD, they all place themselves at the center. As you move into the Middle Ages, Europe still treated Rome as a bit of the center because of its significance with Christianity and the Vatican and Pope sitting in Rome. Rome was a common point of reckoning for most of the cultures in Europe. As you move to the Age of the Great Explorers, you start seeing maps placing Empires and land masses in more proper locations that we recognize today for atlases and globes because the common point of reckoning became the Earth itself, especially learning that it was round. General map usage is arranged as they are today with the Americas on the west side of the map and Asia on the east because there is a pretty convenient gap of featureless ocean and you don't need to look at two sides of the map to chart a course or look at most any given area of it.
Again, when we started charting space, we used the sun as the center of explored space because that was our known point of reckoning. As we start looking farther and farther, and figuring out the geometries other maths we can start to figure out where we are in the Milky Way and then later where the Milky Way is in regards to what we can actually see of other galaxies, and then place it from there.
Following @Camui (sogekidan's) lead. Had all my mechs with an oosk tag. But his method for the whole word "oosik" looked pretty good. So here's my first redo.
From what I've been reading from the PTS, looks like my predictions about LFE are coming true.
A niche thing that would have the rare use, but not be the absolute world altering game changer that others swore it would be.
People will still be mounting XLs for maximum firepower, or Standards for max survival, especially if the mech has a dead side (Sure an LFE would give you, maybe, 2-4kph extra speed, but as soon as you lose that side torso you are worse off than a standard)
Some of the niche uses, for example, will probably be in the Dakka/Boom Crabs to give a little extra room for backup weapons/extra ammo, or in a non-critlocked Atlas for a little extra speed. Again with the drawback of horrible penalties for losing a ST, worsening you survival chance when lost.
How about in lights where losing a ST might mean you are still in the game and can do a bit more damage?
Guessing not since it is an IS light and if you lose your ST you're pretty much dead already?
also you lose a ton of speed (which is the only thing keeping lights alive), and as an IS light your armament os so small losing half of it makes you the mech equivalent of a gnat.

I knew they wouldn't be a game changer because they're still objectively strictly worse than clan XL's.
Do any of the new toys do anything meaningful to close the chasm between IS and clan equipment? Because I've had the suspicion that LFE's are the plastic jewel of the sphere's consolation prize crown.
there isn't much reason to use a STD over an LFE (a few mechs that can zombie effectively might still prefer STDs)
lights will still use XLs cause they can't spare the weight and usually just get legged anyway, but I have a lot of meds and heavies that're gonna swap over to LFEs
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet

Managed to finish the event today. Goddamn useless sacks of shit teams all day though. Too cowardly to push and too retarded to shoot. If you have 8 allie mechs next to the enemies split off group of 3.. what do you do? POKE UNTIL ALL THE ENEMY MECHS ARRIVE! THEN STAND AROUND AND DIE!
/every goddamn game.
But the event is done so hoorah.

I'm thinking of using my free patterns on my Ebon Jag and on either my Rifleman or Warhammer.
Which ones should I get? I haven't really looked at them, so any suggestions would be welcome.

Well that sucks. Guess I'll save some money there at least. I was thinking of turning my Firestarter into something closer to the Arctic Cheetah with a LFE.

Fun with numbers time!
For 150 games over 15 days we have:
Average Match Score: 270
Max Match Scrore: 607
Min Match Score: 102
Loot Bags:
Total C-Bills: 5,050,000
Total Items: 53
Total GXP: 5200
Total MC: 620
The Ave. and Min Match score are a bit misleading because for a lot of my games I would just do a suicide run with a SRM boat to get ~200 damage and get into the next match.
The rewards per match ends up looking less than impressive with a bonus of ~34,000 C-Bills, 4 MC, and 35 GXP per match (plus the items, which values are a bit harder to calculate)
Inspired me to cut and paste my numbers into a spreadsheet as well.
150 games over 15 days:
Average Match Score: 246.79
Max Match Score: 674
Min Match Score: 102
Loot Bags:
Total C-Bills: 4,350,000
Total Vanity Items: 23
Total Consumables: 23 (Strange that both of these numbers are exact. I wouldnt be surprised if the drop chance for both categories is 15.3%)
Total Days Premium: 4
Total GXP: 7500
Total MC: 520
Per Match average: ~29,000 C-Bills, 3.47 MC, and 50 GXP per match.

You ended up with a lot more GXP bags than I did, which ate a lot into the good rewards like MC and C-Bills. Vanity Items/Consumables/Premium Time is about the same though I don't have the individual breakdown of those.
Crits on weapons have two stages like ammo, first crit lowers the weapon's accuracy, second crit takes the weapon out.
Evasion is so dumb I feel like Precision Shot should probably counter it. Evasion or Sensor Lock are almost mandatory depending on your strat.
Small lasers are super scary in BT. I almost wonder if it hints at how hard/uncommon customization will be in the campaign. It sure feels like they've balanced weapons around stock loadouts, but maybe that's just part of the beta. The Shadowhawk's AC5 is basically an AC10, but PPCs still feel a little weak in a stock build.
Also most of my mousepad being occupied might have had some effect on my results
Here's a trick. Get yourself a cat sized cardboard box. Or maybe just the lid to a cardboard box. Cats LOVE climbing into cardboard boxes. Put the cardboard box on your desk, but clear of your mouse and keyboard. Now your cat will chill alongside you while you play video games, except inside the cat box instead of on top of your keyboard.

I had a spare office chair I rolled next to me when my cats wanted to be near me. It had a fabric material so it'd get warm after they laid on it for awhile, and it put them in fairly convenient petting reach whenever I could spare a hand for a moment, while keeping them off the desk proper.

Mine climbs on that spare chair, onto the desk, onto the keyboard tray, then puts his two front paws on my chest and yells right in my face when he is not satisfied.
