I've got a 14 hour drive, I've got a sinus infection, I haven't had a full night's sleep in eight months, so let's go people, cause I'm not doing this again

Did you not play Wolfenstein: The New Order?

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU

Remember when Doom came out last year and it was crazy good?

It was not the first id property to be completely revitalized like that

Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of the best-written and best-directed games out there, it's ludicrous how far above and beyond its station it plays at, AND it's still a really fun shooter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHht8480cEo

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is coming this October, and is doubling down on everything that made the first game successful

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gak-qK-H5R8

These two games also lightly follow up on things introduced in the 2009 Activision & Raven Wolfenstein game, which isn't terrible so maybe give that a go sometime

Everyone is playing or replaying The New Order (which is $10 on Steam right now, hello) so instead of spreading it across 8 different threads, here it is

Also hot holy damn it is actually nearly impossible to get a legitimate copy of Wolfenstein 2009 on PC now

Even legitimate used copies have to be cracked to function on Windows so the only way to play it is either on console or finding a PC copy new in box

I just beat this recently and overall quite enjoyed it, even if I wasn't a fan of the more bullet sponge enemies in the game.

That said, The Old Blood is also on sale for $10 so I just grabbed that and plan to start it today. I know it's not supposed to be as good as The New Order but, I'm still curious about it.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to just bump it down to the lowest difficulty and blast through it. Just let the Nazi murder wash over me.

I have played through this two and a half times in the past week

I've never seen a trailer drive so much interest in the preceding game, but boy the New Colossus trailer got me entirely on board

I played through this again last week to see the Fergus timeline and yeah, it's still excellent. I did notice something though about the ending.
specifically that it is far, far more open to a sequel than I remember. The nuke cannon doesn't get fired, BJ passes out, but towards the end of the credits a helicopter sound gets louder and louder before eventually there's a white flash that could be him waking up, rather than an explosion. It'd be super easy to take that and confirm that Anya turned the chopper around Empire Strikes back style.
Got all the perk unlocks this time hurrah!

As an fyi for anyone playing on an AMD RX series card, you might have to make some tweaks to stop the game crashing for some reason. Specifically, rename the .exe in steamapps/common/wolfenstien to _x32 from _x64 and create a new .txt called steam_appid.txt containing the number 201810 in the same folder. That should stop the game crashing in the prison level. The only catch is you'll have to launch the game directly from the renamed .exe rather than through steam .

I'm enjoying playing TNO, but it's been in spurts. I just don't play games in long stretches like I used to.

I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us

Potentially controversial element I'm curious about people's feelings on in retrospect:
How do you guys feel they handled
the concentration camp bits? Because for me there was definitely some worry going into that level that they wouldn't stick the landing. I'm of the opinion they gave it the majority of the gravity it deserved (and going too much further into the angle might've gotten ghoulish really quickly), so the game at least earned busting out on a giant robot and freeing everyone

One small detail I really appreciate

J walks around playing his guitar not plugged into anything

and the sound cues they play are an unplugged electric guitar

Not an acoustic, not just an electric, specifically an electric guitar not plugged in

I have to say I don't really like the monologue about the monster in his basement as a kid, it's mostly just funny to put over incongruous images like Mario's new hat

Eeesh they are really doubling down on an extended stealth section at the start of The Old Blood.

    I hope that stops soon.

I don't remember where it is but it's pretty short

“When I was a kid, we had a monster in our basement. My father said if I done wrong, it’d creep out at night and come for me.

I tried to do no wrong.

The monster came all the same.""

Replayed it. It's good, but far from perfect. Some of the enemy placement is utter bullshit. Whoever thought that it's fun to place a bulletsponge tank in a hallway and give you no covers and barely enough ammo to kill it is a dumby.

Hopefully they take lesson from Doom for the next one.

The point where Wolfenstein really impressed me came at the end of a cutscene, of all things. BJ was talking on his radio headset to a few other people at once at the end of the mission, and the cutscene did that thing where the screen was split into 4 parts to show each of the people talking. And as the conversation ended and they signed off one by one, their quadrants switched from their face to another shot of BJ but from a different angle than his main quadrant, and then once all 4 parts were different shots of BJ, their cameras swing around to all the same angle and zoomed in, to make a single composite view of him at which point the dividing lines disappeared and it was just him, and then the camera swung again back to first person.

It was a short, little thing that would have been easy to miss, and easier to not bother with, but putting that kind of effort and attention to detail into something as simple as the end of a cutscene feels typical of the game as a whole.

The one major criticism I can make against The New Order is the pacing at the beginning is very bad

It takes like 2-3 hours to get to the 60s and even longer to get to the hideout and see what the game is actually about

I'm sure so many people didn't get past it to see how amazing the rest of the game is

It definitely takes a bit. I only played TNO a few months ago and somehow managed to go into it blind after all these years. I'm so glad I was able to do that.

I showed the E3 trailer to some people I work with and I also talked to them about how awesome TNO is. One of them got so hyped he bought a console to play it and has been texting me his experience along the way. Like, this guy doesn't really play video games. When we're deployed, he'll play a bit of NBA 2k or the UFC game, but that's really it.

That first bit is fine once you're on land.

The planes at the start are pretty rough though.

That sounds about right, I just got through it earlier tonight (I'm 'escorting' Anya's Uncle's truck now) and it takes a while. It also seems a lot longer if you haven't played the game before, because you keep expecting to be in the 60s, and it just doesn't happen.

It's in publishing rights limbo between Activision and Bethesda I think. It used to be available on Steam. Wish I had bought it when I could.

    Holy shit.

It does its storytelling really really well and is just a pretty good shooter
