The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
It ran pretty well while I used it. Still works. I'm on a laptop because of some troubles with my power supply in my antec case. Which segways me into my next thing... I need a new PSU.
The one I have now is a 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 that came inside the Antec Sonata II case and it's making funky noises and this does not please me. So something along the 450Wattage should be excellent, something quiet, affordable yet GOOD.
HDD : Western Digital RE2 or Caviar SE16 (any model # ending in YS or AAKS would be excellent)
PSU : Enermax Liberty 500W (Enermax is expensive, but you'll practically never need another PSU)
LCD : Not my area of expertise
PSU - Enermax is great, but pricey. I have this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104123
And it does me well. Been running it almost all the time for about a year and I have had no problems. Even with the crappy wiring in my house this unit has yet to give me even one dime's worth of grief.
LCD - now this is the tricky one. Some are good, some are great. Others are crap, and it's all hit and miss. So many companies outsource parts or complete units to other companies it's hard to keep track of. Personally I'm a fan of Samsung and LG's panels, but they used to have inverter problems. I think this has been fixed as I haven't heard much about it lately. Sonys are nice, but the majority of the Sonys I've worked on actually run Samsung displays and Sony boards. Odd, yeah. I have a Dell (Samsung) 1905fp at home, and it's awesome. I run dual Dell (LG) 2007FPs at work and they definitely perform up to standards. I have gamer friends that swear by ViewSonic displays. What kind of use is the display going to be seeing?
For gaming, you want an LCD with a good average response time. Some say they're 8ms, but that may be maximum and not average. I'm not a gamer, so I don't have much experience on that end, but my friends seem to really like the ViewSonic panels. One that seems to be recommended a lot is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116375
of course with photo editing and movies, the response time isn't quite as large a requirement but keep in mind that the color vibrancy of LCD monitors still isn't quite up to par with the latest CRT units.
Keep in mind with widescreen LCDs that in order to get the same real estate you need to look at monitors about 2" larger than what you really want. So if you like the 19" regular aspect, look for 21-22" widescreens.
I think this is what I'm going to end up getting and just go shopping for the monitor in person in order to see what I'll actually be getting.
Comments on if what I'm getting is good or not would be nice. I'm getting the external enclosure to put my old 80GB HDD in once I swap it with the 400GB HDD.
