I think people are expecting this to be closer to the survival games then it is meant to be. It seems a lot closer to games like The Division and Destiny with some Survival DNA then full on survival like Rust and Ark. CAMPs feel like they are designed to be nomadic hubs that you plop down to do some crafting or other things nearby where you are being active rather then permanent settlements like you would have in Rust and Ark. I feel it's a good trade off from the "Oh the server is full of buildings that others have put down so I can't find a place to build anything (PvE servers) / Oh we had a few hours where noone was logged in and now out base is leveled to the ground (PvP Servers)" that tends to happen in full on Survival style games.
I'm not sure if anyone I normally play with will end up getting into the first Beta at least so I'll likely be around and be willing to group up with people.

Annnnd Bethesda's shitty launcher just deleted my preload data.
Every time I look at the launcher, the time remaining to download is bigger. Up to "6 hours 57 minutes" now. Guess their d/l server is getting hammered. /eyeroll
Apparently it's "unlocking" which seems to suspiciously take as long as downloading.
Despite having already downloaded it. I see up page there was some issue, and they warned people not to press any buttons? I guess? I didn't push any buttons.

That wasn't unplayable or horribly broken at all. I had one crash on a load screen and that was it. At all other times it ran smooth as butter with nary a hiccup or broken quest. It's a lot like Fallout 4, and you can tell it's missing something with no human NPCs but the constant events going on in the different areas is a great replacement for that. It helps the world feel alive still.
I have to say F76 looks a lot less broken than I was expecting (I was watching XB1 feeds, though) but it definitely lacks in quite a few areas. Bringing back weapon durability was an improvement (though I know some people haaaate that) but the weapon level requirements are just silly. If you kill something 10 levels above you, you should be able to use the drops. It's not like you're going to be rolling in microfusion cells at level 5, for example.
I get that they had to build MP from the ground up but it really feels like something that should be a "$20-$30 if you own Fallout 4" type of thing.

I love the weapon level requirement because it helps give meaning to leveling up. You have something to work towards. Weaponry is scarce and you have to scrounge to remain an effective killing machine at lower levels. I like this 10x better than getting a full set of power armor and a gatling gun at level 1.
Edit: when I hit level 5 and was finally able to use the 10mm pistol and laser pistol I had found it was a great feeling and made me feel like I had earned it.
Everything I'm seeing online is saying 76 is an unmitigated garbage fire. Can anyone here confirm? I've been into Fallout since I was a kid, and this is the first time I've ... I mean, ever, thought twice about picking one up.

It's bullshit. People love to hate bethesda games. Some people had their beta installs eat itself but as far as the game itself it's remarkably stable.. at least that was my experience. Try it out for yourself. Don't just listen to the nonsense which is mostly coming from people who haven't even played the game.
Edit: it's the same fallout you know and love just slightly changed to incorporate multiplayer. If you love the fallout franchise already then you have nothing to worry about.

I haven't seen any specific citations of things that feel odd or didn't work right in the FO76 beta. I mean, beyond that massive "oops deleting your data" thing that happened yesterday.
But yeah filtering through the meme of hating on Bethesda AND the meme of hating when a game changes genres (soft change in this case) is going to be a pretty huge pain in the ass.

Watch some videos and streams. At this point the game is pretty much locked down so what you see is what you get. Obviously avoid the videos that are clearly biased either way. I would not put it past Bethesda or Zenimax to pay for some good press.
I wouldn't say it's a garbage fire but no NPCs is a pretty big downer. Hanging around Diamond City while all the NPCs went around doing their thing was cool.

The events and the environmental storytelling being ratcheted up makes up for it. I guffawed when todd said that "other players" will stand in for NPCs... but it actually does kinda work out that way and it works well.
But yes it is noticeable that theres no live human npcs

The big concern in seeing from watching streams and listening to reviews I trust are the massive frame rate issues. Skill Up posted this morning that he was pretty consistently sitting at like 20 FPS on his high-end PC and it really wasn't much better on his Xbox.
Consoles get capped at 30fps anyway, and the XB1X stream I watched seemed to do fine with it. If good PCs are having problems, though, that's a big concern. That's only supposed to happen after you install 12gb of graphics mods (which isn't an option here, obviously)
Or if a severed arm gets stuck in a doorframe and overloads the physics calculations.

Skill Up, apparently, didn't get to the double-frame rate zones. Was watching TwoAngryGamers+Jackfrags in one of those and the result was pretty funny (since it's not just the frame-rate that gets doubled...it's the whole enemy AI runtimes getting doubled, too). Short version, TAG were getting frustrated, Jack wasn't feeling the game, but Tommy was at least laughing about the absurdity of it.
Also, FO:76 being the "old Fallout you know and love." I mean, unless you love VATS. From what I saw of it in FO:76, VATS is a poor shadow of itself.

VATS seems to be the same as it's always been, since FO3 anyway. Auto-aim at a specific body part with a percentage chance to hit. It just all happens in real-time now.
From what I've seen on Youtube, the game looks decent enough. It just seems so empty without human NPCs to interact with. I'll probably pick it up on sale down the line. Maybe after it's been out for a while and updates have improved things.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Sure, it's not great, but it's probably pretty easy to adjust to.

I'm insanely curious to see how this is going to end up reviewing.
I'm sold after last night, could easily see myself putting in a hundred hours or so but its going to be such a weird game for a lot of people.
The usual Bethesda haters that have been on their ass since everything post Morrowind are probably going to have a field day even if it just gets lots of 7s.
I'm watching this Skill Up guy talking about his experience with the beta, and he says that the UI is tied to the FOV, so if you change your FOV it can push your UI off the screen.
Which is
Look, I don't like shitting on Bethesda because I genuinely think they make amazing games, I think a lot of the heat they get is very unjust, and further I'm a programmer myself (so I know how sometimes you just have to take shortcuts to push things out on time), but this is ridiculous.
EDIT: And now he's saying that even on PC, the UI is clearly oriented towards a controller, so when you're in the building mode you need to use Z and C to scroll through menus. If that's true, then it's basically inexcusable; they've been doing some variant of this since Oblivion, better in some games and worse in others, and there's no justifiable reason not to have bespoke UI and input schemes for consoles and PCs. I know it takes a lot of extra resources to develop and test it; don't matter, you have to do it.
I sure do wish that the beta was a demo and not a paid sneak-peek, so I could try it for myself and see if I want to give them money.
You could do what I did: pre-order from Amazon. I still got a beta code, but they won't charge me until they ship the game, and I can cancel it any time up to that point.

Yeah, part of what made the UI in both Skyrim and FA3, NV, and 4 was that things paused while you navigated the cumbersome menus. I can't imagine trying to navigate what seems to be a basically unchanged UI while fending off things in real time.
Actually, I was mistaken. Apparently the game time is tied (somehow) to your FPS. Not sure how exactly that works, but that pretty much describes nearly all Bethesda games I've played (pushing above 60fps results in some weirdness).

The next two scheduled beta sessions are bad times for me. So at best I'll get to fiddle with it on Sunday for a short time.
So glad I preloaded this, Bethesda!
