That's so cool! I love Max, and didn't even know he played FFXIV (I watch him to stay caught up on the fighting game scene and, more recently, for his Monster Hunter content)
If you want to see really young Max, he posted some video in 2013 when he was playing the game the first time.
He stopped playing the MSQ at level 28 of the quest chain, right before the Haukke Manor part, because he found that boring. Instead, he grinded to level 50 primarily off of FATEs (he's also an FFXI player). So when he got back into the game a month or two ago, he was already 50 and just did an ARR MSQ skip potion to start playing Heavensward.
Sounds like my wife. I understand the story/dialogue gets a little less stilted in the expacs, is that true? If it weren't for me, my wife would have bounced hard on this game ages ago. Dialogue in the main parts of this game is some archaic stuff, and the voice acting does it no favors. I'm cool with it 'cause I'm a nerd, and I suppose this kind of stuff can be immersive to some, but it's grating as hell to others who just want to have a good time kicking ass in an RPG setting.
ARR was made on an insane hellgrind development schedule. They learned a lot, and improved a lot, even in the 2.xx patch series.
Heavensward functionally feels like a different game in terms of pacing and writing quality. It is a huge jump, but in no small part because it builds on the 2.xx foundation in a very coherent way.
So, is there a setting somewhere to have this not pop up on its own?

After the one on login, it never "popped up" for me so much as it became an option in the bottom right like a friend request you minimized but is still pending.

What, do you think, are the odds that Princess Ashe will turn out to be alive and in hiding/exile, as she was in FFXII?
I'd say it's possible, but it's a very slim chance, since Ba'Gamnan and his crew apparently saw her death. That, and FFXIV is very much not afraid to change the fates of characters in the adaptations of previous games (see Hien, for example)
Say I have a 310 or 315 weapon, what's the quickest way for me to get a better one? Preferably 330 or higher. Byakko?
330 is Lost Allagan - 4 runs of O4N + 1000 creation. This can be upped to 340 with one Rab run.
Byakko is 355, but you're not getting in to Kitty EX without a 340 ilevel. Eurekan weapons are also 355 and have 5 materia slots (so, a potential +200 to secondary stats), but you need elemental level 19 to complete one.
Edit: While the full Eurekan weapon requires level 19 to get the item needed, the +2 weapon is 345 and only needs 1300 protean crystals.
Edit 2: The more I think about it, the more I think Eureka is your best bet. Weapon progression is:

Guess I better figure out how to Eureka. I tried it for 30-45 minutes, gained a few levels, got 4 crystals. 100 seems like a hilarious amount, but I haven't read anything about it.
Current plan is to do dailies, use tomes to buy right side gear.
Run the new dungeon to get better left side stuff.
Once I can enter Ridorana, run that and hope for a lucky roll.

The key to Eureka is to embrace the advice of those sages known as the Quad City DJs and Ride The Train. The train is a group of players that move to the various notorious monster spawns, forcing them to spawn and killing them for experience and Anemos crystals (which can be converted to 2-5 protean crystals each.)
Was that just the most convoluted scheme to do ... what? Blow up peace talks and attack Doma, OK. But why the whole ruse? It's not like there's a larger league of nations who will denounce whatever the empire is doing anyway. The united city states hate the empire's guts regardless and other countries are either under the rule of the empire or have played no active role in any of the central conflicts.

Even mroe spoilers for 4.3 MSQ:
Yeah 4.3 story wasn't terribly good. The reason for doing it the way they did though was that in Garland the movement for "Maybe we don't try to invade the whole world" was gaining support and those that wanted to rule the world weren't happy. So by showing how the "uncivilized" world would always resort to summoning Eikons even during peace time, the imperialists would be able to say "No yeah see we need to rule the world because otherwise this is what happens."
As convoluted as ever.
It also felt like they realized they should've had the Tsuyu/Gosetsu end the way they had it in 4.0 and were trying to make up for it, but since they had already screwed the pooch it lost all its punch.

One must remember that the one who came up with this plan was not someone with the Empire's interests in mind, but rather (most likely) an Ascian posing as Zenos, and using Zenos's most blindly devoted fanboy to do the deed without question. As such, this scenario probably advances their plans to create a Rejoining, more than anything else.
If I had to venture a guess? I'd say that he indeed plans for this to harm the influence of the Populares faction in Garlemald. The Ascians can't have a faction brokering peace. Better to make the Empire afraid once more of the Eikonic threat by having it look like Doma proper has begun to summoning as a weapon. Thus, more fighting, escalation of threats, and probably more primal summonings or deadly magics like Ultima from the various factions. All of which weaken Hydaelyn's light. This is probably why the airship carrying Alphinaud was attacked by a faction of Zenos loyalists. Can't have anyone disputing the official story, yes?
I started playing after 4.0 and tend to spend my time trying to level other classes rather than doing level 70 stuff, and yeah, hittng an ilvl wall with every story patch is a pain in the butt
this time I actually have enough, but my girlfriend who I play the story with doesn't, because she's been playing on her alt character
Well, it seems that Gaius has been keeping busy...and that he's a whole lot less dead than we thought.
Apparently, we have Elidibus running around in a Zenos-skin suit, Zenos is apparently in whatever poor bastard Elidibus was in previously, and Gaius is both not dead and has a...few scores to settle with the Ascians. Wonder how he'll take the news that Lahabrea became an eikon Lunchable?
Rode the Eureka train for a few hours yesterday. Participated in several fates and almost got to level 5. Only got chests and anemos crystals from one fate, but it netted me about 45 protean crystals all said and done. So maybe another session or two and I'll have an upgraded weapon, and maybe I'll be able to keep going through the story.
I'll finally be able to start playing again after a couple of months of computer issues. Can anyone in Ghost check how long Jarvellis Mika has been offline for? Hopefully nearing 90 days so I can do the callback campaign thing.
Also, a PSA for all you folks: 350 crafted gear is now fungible by type. The reason is simple - you are no longer keeping 350 gear to use, but purely to convert to 360 gear. So you don't need to look for your role gear anymore - just buy or make the cheapest piece for your particular slot, then convert it to what you actually need.

Sorry we didn't invite anyone, Queen was too shy and felt too awkward inviting people. We were witnessed by another pair of adventurers we had met along they. Queen only agreed to let me invite them because we met them the "legit" way (i.e. we actually quested together), and they were a fellow pair of players, like us. Even then, I had to twist her arm to let me invite them. :surprised:

Went through Ridorana for the first time last night. It was late enough that if this group didn't finish it, we wouldn't have a chance to re-queue before the maintenance. We never actually wiped, but we sure did get wrecked on Famfrit, Math-Bot, and the boss. Belial was kind of easy. Got some boots, too.
I read up on the math beforehand, so that didn't get me, but having to run to the exit of the little mini-boss instance got me.
I really like the bosses in this raid, and the new dungeon is good too. I don't think I'll mind playing these a bunch to gear up.

New raid spoilers
Ugh, figuring out the Math-Bot was almost more frustrating because I went in with knowledge, just incomplete knowledge.
"Oh, we have to stand in the circle that represents something matching the action he's doing, ok, wait, why is everyone standing in different spo--" WRONG!
"Ok, not sure what happened, but let's try this again--divisible by 5?? There's only circles for 1-4 what do I DO?" WRONG!
We wipe and someone says that it's HP and the circle. I notice the Math-Bot does a move called Subtract before the first question. Ok. Got this.
"Alright, indivisible, need a prime number after subtracting the circle's number from HP, ok, got this (little did I know I was already standing in a circle and thus my HP wasn't REALLY my HP), it's 9 right now, so I could get a prime by subtracting either 2 or 4 really so let's go for 4--my HP just changed! What the hell?! HOW IS THAT FAI--" WRONG!
But y'know what? I understand how that one works now. I still don't have any clues on Famfrit's "Lol you decided to stand in the Get Fucked third of the platform, sucks to be you"

For the first boss of the new 24 man raid
Watch the direction the water is being sucked from.
So this patch was supposed to be the conclusion of the Far East storyline and the remaining patches are supposed to focus on Gyr Albania, correct?
If so, I'm kind of surprised that the Garlean Embassy in Kugane never got a use (unless it's part of a job quest I haven't done yet). Prior to this patch's release, I kind of assumed we'd go there and fight Asahi or something.

It was a plot point for some of the 4.0 stuff. But Kugane is neutral so raiding it was unlikely.

Yeah, I figured it'd be a political mess that would end with the Garleans kicked out of Kugane and the airship landing to finally connect to all the other airship points.
All I remember it being used for so far was in the MSQ when we first get there and are getting a tour and they're like "Hey, this foreboding building is the Garlean Embassy," so I had kind of mentally marked it as being a future site of importance whenever the Garleans did something bad enough to justify evicting them. Asahi seemed like a good contender for causing such a mess.

Your HP + the circle on the floor should match what the boss is casting for.
So if you have one HP and the boss wants a number divisible by 5, you will need to stand in the +4 circle.
If you already have a number that fits the equation he's casting, then don't stand in a circle.
