The fact that the SCOTUS allowed this gives me low hopes for their eventual ruling

SCOTUS basically ruled that noncitizens not in the country should not expect constitutional protections, and then ruled as tightly as they could with that in mind. They are not responsible for Trump fucking around.

They are absolutely responsible for not doing anything to guard against what was obviously going to happen.

They are literally not allowed to rule that way. Federal courts can't even give advisory rulings.

Yes, but they could have defined the terms of the ruling more closely than they did.

Denied: Afghanistan's All-Girl Robotics Team Can't Get Visas To The US
Their robot may have permission to travel, but six teenage Afghan inventors are staying put this summer.

They’ve been rejected for a one-week travel visa to escort their robot to the inaugural FIRST Global Challenge – an international robotics competition happening in Washington DC in mid-July.

The all-girl team representing Afghanistan hails from Herat, a city of half a million people in the western part of the country. To interview for their visas, the girls risked a 500 mile trek cross-country to the American embassy in Kabul – the site of several recent suicide attacks and one deadly truck bomb in early June that killed at least 90 people. Despite the recent violence, the teenagers braved the trip to the country’s capital not once, but twice, hoping a second round of interviews might help secure their 7-day visas after the team was rejected on its first try. But no luck.

They're still sending their robot though

If they let little educated afghan girls into the country some people might get the idea that foreigners are not all subhuman unwashed barbarians and that would be very bad for national security

The kind of people who support this ban usually also don't support girls getting educations, especially not in what they consider male fields. So it's a win-win for them.

DOJ and State are actively scrubbing off the internet two major resources that used to be freely available to the public: the EOIR Benchbook and the Foreign Affairs Manual.

the Benchbook was a resource used by Immigration Judges in immigration proceedings and included a LOT of compiled case law, prior decisions, and legal reasoning used by the courts. it was an excellent resource especially for immigrants who could not afford or secure legal counsel. it was also good for pro bono attorneys working on shoestring budgets.

the Foreign Affairs Manual is the guide U.S. consulates use to adjudicate a lot of immigration and visa matters. it's basically a guidebook for persons to understand the visa application process and requirements. i personally use the FAM a lot in my work. huge chunks are now gone.

that both are being scrubbed from public access is...incredibly disheartening and disturbing. not only is it a transparency issue, it's also an issue of fairness and access to the legal system.

    once again, FUCK TRUMP.

parts of the benchbook were captured by parties to a federal lawsuit apparently, but it's only pieces.

the FAM is constantly updated by State, so even if the current version was saved, any policy or procedure changes going forward will be hard to ascertain without an insider at State or some other means to get the Trump Administration to cough up information. this is a pretty serious blow to anyone wanting to apply for a visa to the U.S.

ICE Officers Told to Take Action Against All Undocumented Immigrants Encountered While on Duty

The head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit in charge of deportations has directed his officers to take action against all undocumented immigrants they may cross paths with, regardless of criminal histories. The guidance appears to go beyond the Trump administration’s publicly stated aims, and some advocates say may explain a marked increase in immigration arrests.

I mean, we all know that congress people can't actually do math, but this is pretty egregious:

"Are you comfortable, congressman, with providing $1.6 billion of taxpayer money, not from Mexico, to build that wall?" CNN's Alisyn Camerota asked on "New Day."

"Absolutely, yes and more," he replied. "And I'd throw another $5 billion on the pile and I would find half a billion of that from right out of Planned Parenthood's budget. And the rest of it could come out of food stamps and the entitlements that are being spread out for people who haven't worked in three generations."

On the up side, an asshole does the right thing once a decade.
At the urging of President Donald Trump, U.S. officials have reversed course and decided to allow into the United States a group of Afghan girls hoping to participate in an international robotics competition next week, senior administration officials told POLITICO on Wednesday.
    http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/12/trump-afghan-girls-robots-240474

On the down side, they had to apply three fucking times, were denied without being told any reason why the first two times, and even now, don't have a regular visa but some bizarre special-case PAROLE because they clearly can't be trusted. And, in case you forgot, Afghanistan isn't even on the ban list. This is just the State Department being the hugest assholes possible.

Yeah, they would have either gone "Look at how awesome the ban as worked! No terrorist attacks! We're extending it another 90 days." or "Obviously 90 days wasn't enough to stop the terrorist attacks, so we're extending it another 90 days."

The wall needs to be see-through, the president continued, because drug dealers may otherwise throw large bags of drugs over the wall to the other side, and hit innocent passers-by. “As horrible as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don’t see them—they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It’s over,” he added. “As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall. But we have some incredible designs.”

There are sections of wall already where there's a piece of square stock steel standing vertically, then a gap that's about the width of the steel, then another piece of steel. Kind of like a steel picket fence; you can see through it but not walk through it.

Maybe this is how we develop transparent aluminum. That'd be a pretty fitting twist for the darkest timeline.

I wonder if the Democrats could take advantage of Donald's ideas for the wall. Figure out some way to pass legislation to build the wall, but front load the process with environmental studies for it's proposed route and funding for the insane number of solar panels it will require. Fingers crossed, in four years we have a unified Democratic government with a warehouse full of solar panels just waiting to be installed.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!
