Toys R Us could file for bankruptcy as soon as this week, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The sources noted that the bankruptcy plans are not definite, and both its plans to file and its timing could change.
A bankruptcy would help simplify a capital structure made complex by its trio of financial owners. Toys R Us was acquired by private equity firms Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Bain Capital Partners and real estate investment trust Vornado Realty Trust in 2005 in a deal valued at $6.6 billion.
This would be shitty as it would mean one less possible avenue to pick up a SNESc, and also I loved TRU as a kid :bigfrown:
Haha I saw that too and thought about posting it here.
I believe it doesn't necessarily mean they'll shutter their doors forever (Macy's went through a bankruptcy as well), but it's interesting that they are $400 million in debt.
$400m in debt isn't a big deal if the revenue is there to make the payments. Debt isn't a really bad thing in business so long as you're using those liabilities to increase equity.
$5 billion total debt though. It's a lot of debt.

Their debt and too much costly retail space is why they are struggling right now. They amplify debt problems by kicking the can down the road. They restructure the debt and buy themselves some time, but at the cost of increased interest rates. Vendors are curtailing shipments, afraid they won't be paid in time. Other vendors outright demand payment upfront. Between maturing debt payments and interest expenses the company does not have the resources to invest in their stores, merchandising, and online presence. Meanwhile their biggest competitors engage in price-wars to steal their customers. To top it off a lot of toy companies/brands are just struggling in general right now a la Lego, Mattel, etc.
So this Starfox 2 I've never heard of...is this an actual complete game that was just never released for some reason? Is this legit and why have I never heard of it until now?
edit: also is Nintendo ditching the controllers with two feet of cable this time around?

It's a game that was finished, or at least nearly so, but I guess never released because it was too close to StarFox 64.
For many years there were two of them in Tulsa -- one roughly in the center of the metro area, and one waaaaay on the eastern edge. That one was built to capitalize on a mall across the street that was built on the assumption Tulsa's development would head east. It didn't. The mall entered a death spiral around 2002 and finally died in 2007. The other retail built near the mall died too. To get to that Toys R Us from Tulsa, you had to drive through 2-3 miles of crappy neighborhood. And when I say it was on the eastern edge, I meant it -- other than a bank branch and a tire shop across the street, there was nothing but woods.
That Toys R Us didn't close until late last year. The few times I was in it there weren't many customers and it looked like Satan's forgotten childhood playroom.
So yeah, I can imagine Toys R Us had some money management issues.
toys r us is always more expensive than anywhere else, they have swathes of weird toys stocked, and they are what always appear to be in a constant state of re-organizing everything which is very customer unfriendly. i can only assume their leadership is very very bad at their jobs.

I was pretty sad to hear the Toys R Us near my parents' place closed about 2 years ago. I'd been going there since I was a kid, back when you had to bring the slip of paper to the cashier, and then bring the receipt to the people in the booth to get your game. I think the last major thing I got from them was a Wii system when I was in my late 20s and had to wait outside the store around 4 AM.
Hopefully the current locations can stay open long enough to provide stock of the SNES Classics.
My TRU still has that paper slip system for games, actually. I was surprised when I went to a different TRU that didn't have that.
Up until about 4 or 5 years ago, they still had their "World of Nintendo" signage, too.
I remember thinking that system was really cool when I was a kid. Back then, my mom would either take me to TRU or Wal-Mart for new games, and even then, it was tough tracking down someone with a key for video games. But there was always someone ready and waiting to go grab the stuff you just paid for at TRU.
Last time I saw that system still in effect was when I popped in their to buy some Neo Geo Pocket Color games.
Oh shit, this is the SNES Classic thread. I was peeping at next week's Target ad when I was at work, and saw the SNES in there. I don't know why, but it still seemed pretty far off in my mind, but it's really just 10 days away now. I'm still not planning on getting one, but I'm interested in seeing how early people start lining up.

There's a new SNES Classic developer interview out, this time it's about Super Metroid.
I agree that probably the TRU thing is just going to result in some less profitable stores getting shut down and life will go on for awhile. I'm not sure how they'll stay around long term though, given they are pretty much always more expensive for stuff than Walmart or Target or Amazon. I still love wandering the aisles, it's actually my go-to way to relax in the middle of a rough work day, but they need to find a way to carve a niche back out for themselves.
I was also thinking about how I miss the joy of getting my monthly game magazine (Nintendo Power for a long while, then EGM). The internet took that all away. Something nostalgic about being in the dark for a long time and then getting a huge info dump.

I've been going to them recently because they seem to have much better stock than other places. WiiU/3DS/PS4 games, amiibo, Switch accessories, etc. Especially WiiU games, they've had a bunch of stock other places didn't and I've been trying find stuff on clearance now that the Switch has been around. It's also been extremely easy for me to price match stuff there.
Yeah, I'm going to swing by the Wal-Mart by my house to ask if they're doing a "as soon as it's technically the 29th" kind of thing. If so I'll try to get in line.
Failing that ill head towards TRU I ther morning, but the target near me is directly on the way and won't be open yet, so ill drive by the parking lot, see if there's a line of any sort.
If no or very short line (unlikely) shift plans. Otherwise, continue to TRU and hang out like a dork for a couple hours until they open.
Ohhh it comes out next Friday? I start a new job Oct 2nd, and have all of next week off.

I do know this though, from my experiences doing this for a long time:
Whatever time you think you'll be safe lining up at, subtract 2 hours from that time and line up then instead. If you're in a major city: subtract another 2 hours for a total of 4 hours earlier than you thought.

It's the only way to be sure.
Does Wichita count as a major city? We also only have 1 TRU for 400k people, and its kind of on the opposite side of town from me. That's why I'm hedging with our much more plentiful Wal-Mart's and Targets.

Does Nintendo stuff often sell out quickly there?

I'm outside of Denver so pretty big. I'm gonna hit up wal-mart at midnight I suppose but was thinking 6-8 for Toys R Us that opens at 10. Should probably be enough? Is anyone even getting allotments that aren't preordered besides Toys R Us?

If I were a more resourceful man I would set up some kind of webcam with a transmitter accross from the entrance of whatever TRU I planned on camping to give me warning if anyone tries to early bird it.

As far as i know everyone is getting allotments above the preorder amounts. Game Stop definitely said they were but they're probably among the most likely to have big lines.

Not a clue. They've never been in stock when i checked, but i really only check if I'm like in the store buying light bulbs or cat litter or something. I haven't been making more than a cursory effort.

I think the first game I'm going to fire up will be EarthBound, because of course I need to play through this game for the 5000th time. :P
My first game will most likely be Secret of Mana with the Lady. I imagine I will go through them all though for a span of time, one after the other heh.
I just remembered that one of the first SNES games I bought myself as a young lad was FF3. At a Toys R Us. I can still even sort of remember picking up the ticket from the wall, and marvelling how awesome this game must be if it cost $79.99.
And now we're full circle, since FF3 is on the SNES classic. At the same price point!
Goddamn this thread is making me feel like a kid again. Did anyone ever win one of those timed grab-all-you-can shopping sprees at Toys r' Us? That was always my dream back in the day.
Went to TRU at lunch. They easily had the best Amiibo selection I've seen anywhere in town. I almost bought a Lego set, but I already have 5 Dimensions sets waiting for me to put together at home so that seemed like a bad idea.

the last time I went to TRU to buy lego a couple years ago their LP followed me around nonstop and the cashier refused to price-match their own website. Never been back.

I played it for the first time when it was released on Wii U, but I only ended up playing it for a couple of hours (I stopped just after getting the third party member). I really need to give it another shot.

I still remember the awesome joy it was to visit one though. So many toys and fun things in one place.
Living in rural NH, going to Toys R Us in the mid-to-late 80s was pretty much a religious experience.
