Wait... Konami had talent other than Kojima? :P

Don't think I'll be buying this at launch as I have both Monster Hunter World and Dynasty Warriors 9 eating up my time and achievement completion percentage... but we'll see... that's a lot of sword and little gun. Maybe I will get it.

I'm an hour or two into single player, liking it so far, though I like survival games such as The Long Dark. It makes scrounging for resources more meaningful, and my favorite part of Phantom Pain was the open world sandbox and basebuilding.

Yup, it's the survival aspect that I'm looking forward to, it's a bummer there is no coop for that mode. Unfortunately the game isn't priced competitively on Steam for me ($1000 mxn vs the usual $800 for new games) so I might wait until a small sale shows up.

So I'm a couple hours into it, liking it so far although there is definitely a learning curve. For example, early on you have to reactivate teleporters which trigger a horde wave, but if you clear the area beforehand you only have to deal with a few to avoid getting swamped. You can and also play co-op almost from the start and earn tons of credits to level up your stats and unlock combos, as well as plenty of resources which make single player much easier. Another good early game trick is to farm animals near your base by saving and exiting, I stockpiled up on food pretty quickly. The basebuilding also opens up as you progress, I just unlocked farming and base crew

It's almost like a fun non-canon DLC expansion for MGSV; if you dont go into it expecting MGSVI and like survival basebuilding and coop horde as opposed to pvp I think it's good for $40. I traded in a DS4 which almost covered the price for me

Wait, the game is $40? So it's actually more expensive on the Mexican Steam store?

    Fuck that noise.

Edit: It's currently $33 on GMG, guess I'll just get it there.

5 hours in, and I absolutely have enjoyed every minute.

If you are a survival game fan, this is really good so far, it's definitely challenging, though I think if you play multiplayer it might get easy.

If there's something this game desperately needs is an option to turn off the constant nagging about "You are running low on Oxygen. You can charge oxygen by using kuban energy, and transforming it into oxygen, let me explain this again in complete detail every single time your oxygen gets close to 20%."

This also applies for food and water, its especially weird given that the game seems to have a "hardcore" approach yet they felt the need to constantly nag you about these things.

  • Options

Obviously if you're allowing your oxygen to get so low, it is because you forgot how oxygen charging works! :P

I'm on PSN as mattjb1986, just unlocked the next coop area and would be down for any S rank attempts.

Now that I'm a ways into the game, found a few tips. A big game changer is getting a bow with heavy arrows along with equipment that has mod slots to carry extra ammo, along with the shotgun and ammo pouch. You should be able to easily one shot almost everything, including the big bomber guys by hitting the back of their neck. Doing story missions also unlocks new buildings for your base, like the potato farm and water collectors. You can find potatoes just outside Teleporter 03 in a pile of rubbish, don't eat them! Save them to craft potato farms!

Doing coop missions definitely makes single player easier so if you get frustrated in SP it's a good way to level up and resupply without the hunger/thirst stress

Masahiro Ito is on creature design? That absolutely makes sense now, what with what the
    Lord of Dust

    looks like.

I've completed the single player story, and am on to the post-game content. The story feels like an extended tutorial, really. You don't start getting some of the really weird, cool things until then. Heck, you don't even get the Assault/Jaeger/Medic/Scout classes until a few 'missions' into the post-game.

Co-op is fun, if somewhat bland. I felt like I was able to get to Hard mode a bit too quick, but it's entertaining as a Horde mode.

I'm hoping that future equipment and gadgets start to veer into the really goofy, like MGS V's did, and that there will be more classes added at a later date. Four classes with a bunch of guns and explosives is kinda the bare minimum to make a good Horde mode these days.

The game is set up perfectly for a battle Royale mode as well, kind of weird how there's no PvP modes. Hopefully there will be in the future, unless the game bombs badly sales wise

It's sad just how hard people and even some sites are trying to make this game look bad. Since when are spinoffs a bad thing? Do people pay so little attention that they really thought this was a MGS6 game?

At least it's good to see that people who actually play the game like it, as the positive rating on Steam shows.

I utterly don't doubt there are people review bombing the game out of principle and spite.

That said, it does look like a below average survival game. And filled to the brim with your standard "pay us to not actually play the game" microtransactions. I'm actually fully willing to give it a try. But principle also demands I not spend full price on it. Only if and when it drops below $20 or even $10 will I consider it.

To be fair, that youtube reviewer like most seems to have not played past the first part of the game, by which time you have guns, grenades and upgraded your character to have more stamina and health to the point where you can run often without worrying much. I'm not saying it's a 10/10 game, but it's one of the best survival games Ive played. Subnautica also has the draining health and oxygen meters but never saw a reviewer say it was a negative.

If you go into it expecting a survival game with lots of progression then you're going to have a great time with it as many have. If you go into it expecting MGSVI you're going to hate it and not even try to progress in it. Crafting my first bow after having had to use a fence and spear felt very rewarding, as did gradually building up my character and base. Again, if you don't like grindy survival games you'd hate it.

Personally I'm having a blast, and the microtransactions don't seem like something I'd ever spend money on as they don't seem to gate off any real gameplay. Paying for an extra save slot is scummy, but tbh I don't know why anyone would want an extra one since the game is so progression based

@Dac mentioned above that you get 4 different class options in the post-game. Are those mutually exclusive? If they are, then gating the ability to have 4 different save slots behind (IIRC) $30 in micro-transactions makes a lot more sense and is a lot scummier.

This is truly spoken like someone who hasn't played the game and expected MGS6. It is exactly what I'm taking about. Dunkey more often than not will review games at a very shallow level if he doesn't like them. The review stops being objective when he only shows spearing enemies through fences over and over again.

It isn't shitty and unrelated. What I don't get is all the people hating and drive-by shitposting on a game they don't really even know about. They didn't rush this game out, it isn't riddled with bugs or game breaking glitches. The Metal Gear Solid series has a long history of spin-off games with totally different gameplay. I think a lot of the hate is just people being trolls

The game isn't perfect, and I agree with Echo that the melee combat is still clunky, but I think it's an above average survival game (almost by default as most survival games are early access and very buggy). Everyone has 'pinions, but most players that have actually played the game awhile have been having fun with it. Kojima being gone sucks, but that doesn't mean the franchise should die IMO. Konami has a ton of MGS veterans and I'm more than happy that they're keeping them employed and making games for the series they've been working on their whole careers. For example, the game director for Survive has been working on the series since MGS3 where he was a scripter (I wouldn't be surprised if he got the idea for this game way back then)

At some point you have to separate the corporate suits at Konami and the actual talented game developers that worked on the game

And that's fine too, if you don't agree with a company you have every right to not buy their games, I know someone who refuses to buy Activision Blizzard games because of their massive tax avoidance scheme. Personally I think you can enjoy a game on it's own separated from it's publisher, but totally get why some people won't. I hope Konami keeps making games though

The problem fans are having is that they DIDN'T continue the series. They immediately spun it into a years-too-late fad rip off game in a different genre with a plot that the creator of the series immediately went "Ha ha ha? what? fuck no." And yes, they put some series vets on there, but it's similar to the corpse of Infinity Ward making Modern Warfare 3. All the top people were thrown out on their ass and then a new game was just pumped out, nakedly the worst one in the series.

I also think comparing MGS Survive to a unique, original passion project like Subnautica is a frickin' insult to that dev team and it should be taken back.

I think Konami knew a MGSVI would be a huge investment, I really don't mine when franchises experiment and try new things. If they marketed this as an expansion for MGSV and sold it for $20 without microtransactions that would have been the best case scenario. With all the negative backlash I doubt Konami is going to fully fund a mainline entry in the series anytime soon, let alone any new creative experimental games like Survive for their other franchises (yes, I would buy a reskinned Castlevania Survive) which really is a shame for some fans of the franchise like myself

Save thing is overblown. You can do everything in the game on a single save slot. Literally the only reason to even desire additional saves is for a different gender, since you can edit everything about your character's appearance aside from that after creation, for free, the second you can access the skill trainer. Or maybe you just really, really love the slow beginning of the game (lol).

It's pretty ridiculous that it's getting all the headlines.

Y'know what woulda cost a significantly less investment with much more goodwill payoff - finishing MGSV. Even just the Kingdom Of The Flies, would have gone a long way to making people like Konami again.

I assume most people dunking on this won't ever even look at it, much less play it. I don't really think that's unfair though. They got everything to prove, and delivered an at best sub par game.

Yeah, I have no clue what the practically need for an additional save slot in this game would be. But it's a hill to fight Konami on, and pandering to outrage generates those clicks... so... here we are. :P

It's pretty ridiculous anyone would defend them on this. Please explain why trying to make save files a source of extra cash is acceptable? What if control configuration costs a fiver next, is that cool? I'm extremely hostile to the idea of letting this go or trying to mitigate an attack on their customers.

At the moment the daily log-in bonus is the currency to buy the second character slot if you really need it (or some equally useless boosts) with this you can have 2 character slots for free.
not that it matters as there is almost 0 need for multiple characters (literally the only thing you can't change on a character once made is gender)
MGS-5 only had the one save slot with no option to get more and everyone was able to cope with that, So I do not understand why this is the hill people are willing to die on.

20 hours in now and I can freely move between the maps, have my agriculture at a point where I am self sufficient and have some decent weapons when I can keep them stocked in ammo (which is my current roadblock)
The slingshot is a godsend for stunning animals especially the quicker ones.

So far I am really liking the game, I just wish I knew more people who owned it so I could get some co-op games in.
