I frequently listen to different FF playlists at work. The Decisive Battle just came on and now I have an overwhelming desire to play through VI again. Then the Besaid theme came on and now I really want to play X again. Except I'm already halfway through a playthrough of XII Zodiac Age.
I guess my point is that time is indeed the enemy.
I know, talking about FF5 earlier got me in the mood to replay that game...man I wish they would rerelease the GBA edition on Switch. I need the correct port now.
They should just collect all of the Square-Enix SNES games into a single mega-collection bundle and sell it on the Switch. They should definitely use the updated ports (Chrono Trigger DS) where appropriate. It would probably make ALL OF THE MONEY.

I would buy that in a heartbeat at pretty much any price.
I think the extra dungeons in Chrono Trigger were a nasty blemish on an otherwise near perfect game. So much backtracking, repetitive unavoidable fights, and minimal story content that feels so bloated in comparison with the core game.
Everything, main narrative or side quest, builds up either a character or the world, and then these slogs come along that take hours to complete for either A: nothing or B: a loose, ultimately meaningless connection to another game that provides the same information in a much more interesting manner.
More is not always better, and I resent the hell out of those experiences. Yes, I can ignore them (like the superfluous anime cut scenes) that’s fine, but this is an unforgivable affront to my sensibilities.
I was fine with the extra content in Chrono Trigger. It gave me more things to do in one of my favorite RPGs. It could have certainly been better but it was good enough for me...except for that boss fight where you had to kill the two bosses at essentially the same time or they'd revive each other - fuck that fight straight to hell. That is one of my least favorite RPG trope mechanics.

And Steam.
Hell, put it on every console, and Steam, find a way to make smart refrigerators play the damn thing. Just make it available.

You know what? If you make it a choose your own adventure thing like Skyrim was, I'd play it.
The GBA version of IV is quite literally the SNES version. Same graphics, same game (aside from the translation and post game bits, obviously). The PSP version is based off that, just with prettier graphics. And it's got The After Years, y'know if... you wanna...
The 3D version is a full retool. Same basic game design, but also some new stuff like the whole augment system.

The only difference with the GBA versions is the music isn't as good because the GBA had a worse audio processor. It's more noticable in VI but they're all a bit worse because of it.
Yeah, that's pretty much a guaranteed feature of all SNES to GBA conversions (that, and somewhat lower resolution and a slightly different aspect ratio, I think?). The same was true for Super Mario World on GBA.

The gba is weird, its not like its a lower resolution in ports so much as a fourth or so of the screen is missing verticallyso it ends up cropped.
The gba was 240x160, the snes was 256x224 (the snes was technically capable of outputting at full 480 resolution of a telivision but it was very rare for games to output anything but purely text based menus at this resolution because the snes could barely handle output of gaming at real time at half res).
So most ports keep the actual sprites the same size and just scrunch the interface and chop off part of the viewable area of the screen. This is really noticable in link to the past, for example, or if you look at screens of the super famicon Rockman and Forte vs the gba megaman and bass.
The gba processor is actually pretty damn powerful for its time, it is capable of running things at full speed that the snes can’t, but it doesnt have a dedicated sound processor so it has to do all that on the main cpu and it sounds like shit. It also doesn’t have some of the auxillary graphics functions of the snes because those were on dedicated chips.
If Nintendo had made a snes variation with a gba core but dedicated sound and graphics chips it would have been a great 2d platform, but nothing like that really came out until the DS (which was a great 2d platform as evidenced by mega man zx, the castlevania games, the dragon quest remakes, etc, but by that point no one gave a shit about 2d sprite games anymore so it was underutilized)

There is a nasty ATB bug in that GBA release where you can get double turns and it completely destroys the difficulty. Which indirectly makes Kain like the worst party member because Jumps aren't instant. This bug is fixed in the PSP port. And I dunno, I love the original spritework and I'm not a big fan of the PSP sprites.
FFIV DS was a lot of fun, but the original version of it was brutal in difficulty at some points. I remember getting wrecked in mid-game dungeons by some of the random enemies because of some bad luck with turn order. I've heard the later ports to mobile and PC were tuned down in difficulty, though.
I think FFIV on the SNES was just wacky since we got the EZ mode which removed a ton of abilities: I think that’s what made it so difficult in odd places.
At this point, I’m almost afraid to play FFXIII or XV. If I play them, I’ll have an opinion on them; one that I’ll need to defend or refrain from expressing.
Sorry to bring up a two-day old quote. In both this and the Star Wars thread (so, two of my greatest and oldest interests) we get into vicious circular arguments about what is purely minutia. I think the biggest contributing factor of this is simply the format of a forum: where tone and nuance is largely lost when translated to text and the speaker-listener relationship is extremely easy to confuse: e.g. I'm not really talking to just Enlong here, but rather the thread at large, though other times that may not be the case and it's not easy to tell when that context changes. I understand that is extremely tiring for some people (and especially the mods) so I try to tone it down, but (not so) secretly this is where I find the most fun on the forum.
For me the pointless "arguing with strangers" isn't about winning or losing arguments like some debate team competition, but rather the simple joy of discussing something that I love (or desperately wanted to love in the case of some titles). My little brother shares a lot of the same interests as I do, but he's of the mentality that if he's not enjoying a game he's perfectly fine just dropping it wholesale: something I only do with series that I'm generally new at. So when we talk about Final Fantasy XIII for instance he's just not interested in talking about why it's good or bad: he didn't enjoy the opening act and dropped it never looking back. I'd say a secondary benefit is sometimes I gain a new appreciation for things that I liked or even disliked through other's experiences of the games. And while these arguments get heated at times I'd like everyone to know that I don't judge anyone by their opinions of things even when I disagree with them.
With all that I've found that this channel in particular, Resonant Arcnée Dark Pixel Gaming, to cleave very closely to my own opinions on each of the games he's reviewed. He's very respectful of the material, delves deep into the history of the game, and is generally pretty quick to the point while using a conversational tone that I enjoy listening to, similar to a podcast. More importantly though, when I listen to a podcast or youtube reviewer, I'm expecting a depth and clarity to their argument that I'm incapable of producing on my own. So when a little more than a year ago he started his playthrough of Final Fantasy XIII and put out a video that made me think he was just going to go on a gripefest about FFXIII, I ended up dropping the channel for a while. That ended up being a poor decision on my part because I just listened to his review of FFXIII and I think it's nuanced, balanced, and respectful while still coming to the same conclusions that I did. It's a bit long at 44 minutes (most of his videos are between the 10-15 minute mark) but there is a lot to talk about too and I think he uses the time efficiently. So at the risk of opening another circular argument, allow me to share this video:
35 years before the events of Final Fantasy XV. Verstael Besithia, a researcher belonging to the Empire of Niflheim, releases Ardyn Lucis Caelum from 2,000 years of imprisonment. Led to the Imperial research facility, Ardyn discovers a certain truth and decides to take revenge upon the Kingdom of Lucis.
■ Infiltrate the Crown City Insomnia
Ardyn infiltrates Insomnia to destroy the peaceful Crown City, which is surrounded by a magic barrier. And what does Ardyn see beyond his revenge…?
■ Characters
Characters from main story of Final Fantasy XV will appear in “Episode Ardyn” several decades younger. New characters such as Ardyn’s beloved Aera Mils Fleuret and his younger brother Somnus Lucis Caelum will also appear.
Maybe when they release the Full Definitive Final Royal Deluxe FFXV Classic with Dante from the Devil May Cry series Featuring New Funky Mode I'll grab FFXV. I think I can look past the complaints people have and just enjoy a nice bro road trip interspersed with combat and on-rails like story telling.

Does it include access to the newest DLCs like Episode Ardyn? If not I'm fine with waiting until the next "Complete" edition.
I couldn't remember if this Ardyn episode was supposed to be free or not. But I guess it's paid because I just found info that season pass owners will get it ('cuz we didn't get the royal updates, haha jokes on us I guess).
So RE will absolutely get it for free. It's the last thing they're ever doing for the game. And I can't see them whipping up another special version just to highlight this one thing.

I've gotten back into XIV recently, and decided I want to be a ninja for now, at least long enough to finish the Stormblood story and all related patch content.
And that got me thinking... who are my Final Fantasy ninja role models? And then I was stumped. Has the really not been a true ninja in the party since Shadow?
I cannot think of a single ninja in any of the mainline games from 7 onward. Shadow is the last true ninja I can think of.

After that I can only name thief types (Zidane, Rikku).

Was there any problem with the gba version of 4? I am not a fan of the remake.
I would love dq 3-6 on switch.
Was it just the graphics of the remake? I wonder if they could let you swap those with the 2D pixels as an option...
It's perfectly functional, but the PSP version is better in every way.
Yeah I really don’t care for the 3d art.
Wasn’t the psp version new art too? But different new art, like the mobile 5 and 6 versions?
