From how it was explained to me the first lord of the necrons who contacted the C'tan got bored/sick of them and shattered them into pieces to power the empire

i don't WANT the necrons to have character. i'm 100% ok with them being metal zombies with no other need whatsoever.
I get you, but them not having character just makes them metal zombie Tyranids, and I get why GW thought that was redundant. I mean, yes they lose out on the "ancient unknowable cosmic horror that awakens if you delve too deeply" thing, but I think that makes them too one-note for a miniatures line.
The necrons weren't completely soulless in the old lore, though. Individuals were, but there were the lords or whatever who were still super powerful. I kind of liked them as 40k Tomb Lords: Nobles who'd sacrificed all of their people for eternal life and power and ruled over dust and nothingness.
My ex-boss got into a car accident. Lost his left leg below the knee. He will require a prosthetic.
He plays orks.
Watching face light up when I suggested he could fashion a decorative cover that made his prosthetic look like it was assembled by a Mad Dok went a long way toward making me confident that he's gonna be okay.

I like Necrons as a counterpart to Tyranids.
Like, from anyone else's perspective, they're pretty much the same thing. If they show up at an unprotected planet, you're dead and the planet is effectively destroyed. But where Necrons are all about death and destruction, the Tyranids are destroying everything in the process of creating new life. They're an invasive species, taking over any of the resources that local species might use - the death they bring is due to an overabundance of life, rather than the harsh void of the Necrons. They're two sides of the same coin, effectively.

This is still kind of the case. Only the more powerful Necrons (Lords/Overlords/Phaerons and their more advanced servants) have any sort of personality, and they tend to have Courts and bicker with others over who should have dominion over what area of space/time, etc. Regular warriors and such are just automatons.

More of my day-to-day vocabulary is based on Harvey Birdman than is probably healthy, which is probably a big reason why I have a problem forging new friendships.
I never quote it, but I often find myself remembering when Brak got a very deep voice and mentioned stylish clothes and a derby hat and it makes me laugh to myself--probably makes other people uncomfortable.

Everything is a sex thing if you believe.
