It's fairly simple. Cats walk by themselves, and all places are alike to them. They come inside when they have to for warmth and shelter and food, but the rest of the time they go out to the wet wild woods or up the wet wild trees or on the wet wild roofs, waving their wild tail and walking by their wild lone.
wikipedia says that according to the archaeological evidence dogs have been living with humans since pre-agricultural hunter-gatherer times, sometime between 15000 BC and 30000 BC, while cats began living around humans probably directly because of agriculture creating grain supplies that attracted rodents, sometime between 7500 BC and 9000 BC.
Modern humans probably wouldn't be the modern human without dogs. And dogs wouldn't be dogs without humans. We are symbiotic organisms through and through.
