Due to the generosity and goodwill of the steam thread here on PA, we raised a lot of money for Child's play. As a donation incentive, and poor life choices I offered to play through all of the X-com games on stream and well, here we are!
The format
I will be playing through X-Com: UFO Defense, X-Com: Terror from the deep, XCOM: Enemy unknown, and XCOM2. Due to the aformentioned generosity, UFO defense and Terror from the deep on
SUPERHUMAN difficulty. The hardest there is. This is gonna hurt.
how it's gonna work
I'll try to stream at least once a week, for at least an hour. I will continue the game until I either beat it or get the full game over. Because of this goal, I will not be doing an ironman run of any of the games. I will, however be doing what some call a bronzeman run. There will be no resets during a mission. And and all outcomes of missions will be kept except for the event of a full squad wipe.
Where you at?!
The streams will be conducted live at
Twitch.tv/heenato while archived once twitch uploads them at
"https://www.youtube.com/user/Heenato" Stream times will be announced with as much forwarning as I can.
(this OP will get updated to look nicer and be better once I get a chance)

Edit: Youtube link does the same.
As for apoc, well. It's going to be a long enough series of streams. I had to draw the line somewhere so I wouldn't be doing this for like two years, and Apoc was the one to cut.
Just a heads up, Twitch is having a time today, and I cannot connect in any way. So if it's not fixed by go-time, I might have to postpone.

Incidentally, the first video will probably be up on youtube sometime tommorow. If you want to know how I imagine most of this run is going to go, I took a highlight.

And so ended my first and only attempt at TFTD Superhuman ironman.
Not the laser tier weapons. Those are useless. If I get those quick enough, a month 2 base raid might not be so bad. It'd usually still be aquatoids and such at that point.
An alternative "pro-strat" I've seen is to deliberately keep your score under a certain threshold to avoid the base raid, but that's a bit too gamey for me.

So what does this mean? Well. I COULD just skip to terror from the deep and lose in a single session. Or call superhuman a wash. This is a bit of a cop out, but honestly, so there isn't just like 3 videos of old-com I'm adopting a stance of playing superhuman until loss, then lowering the difificulty to something managable. So while the superhuman run has ended for UFO defense, it will be back for terror from the deep.
Honestly, in the battlescape it wasn't that bad. There were some clown cars of enemies, but nothing unmanagable.
The airgame however got extraordinarily bad. To the point where I don't even think it was fun to watch. The UFOs were far and away faster than my interceptors, even the baby scout ships, and could just shrug off avalanche missiles. That's really what killed me. I ended up doing nothing but terror missions, and shot nothing down, so my score was abysmal each time.
While I was enjoying the battles a whole lot, the geoscape just got so much worse. I'm going to try and think of something to at least attempt to keep that superhuman promise but also make it watchable.
I've done a bit of testing, and I THINK I have something that'll let me continue on superhuman. Just a few tweaks to make the start on the geoscape a bit easier. So next stream we'll give superhuman one more try.
I have turned on a few quality of life/better start things to help mitigate the issues. Interceptors will now actually try to intercept UFOS instead of chasing, The starting base has been upgraded slightly (It's still a terrible configuration because that's more entertaining) and now sports a large radar instead of small, comes with an alien containment, and a full crew of scientists and engineers. The interceptors just start with 2 avalanche launchers each now as well.
All these things might seem a bit against the spirit of X-com, but at the same time, I think it's just the edge I need to be able to continue.
I'm gonna be doing a birthday stream on monday, august 7th, and I'll be doin' a bit of Com as part of that. Probably around 9 EST.

Archive for stream 4 is up here X-com 4
Next time, we do a base raid. I hope it isn't snakemen.
I also have a pretty good highlight from last night.
Incidentally, I think I've caused the progression curve to just eat itself, as I'm half a month away from the avenger, and have yet to see snakemen.
I can tell you right now, I will not be spending long on terror from the deep. It'll probably just be a stream or two of "Look at this bullshit. what even is this"
It'll be a lot better once I get to newcom. at least 1, since I'm very familiar with those games. and newcom 2 might be interesting for some people to watch because I despise that game with my entire being.
Next stream will be thursday 8/31 at 8PM. I'll see if I can power through this roadblock and continue. if not, I'll probably start moving on.
