Challenge Rift? Man...gonna have a lot to learn when I start my Necro Thursday!
Don't worry, it can sound complicated but it's not really. It's simply a new game mode, selectable under the campaign / adventure mode buttons in game settings.
You play what is basically a snapshot of someone else's previous greater rift clear, using their character, and try to do it faster than they did. Blizzard picks a new one each week, and you can run it as many times as you like if you ever feel like competing on the weekly leaderboard.
The first time you beat the timer you get a cache with gold, blood shards, and materials. You get it in the mail like the seasonal set box, and it can be opened by any character in any game mode. The only restriction is that seasonal characters can only open caches earned during the active season - hence the recommendation to run it Thursday night.
If you want to end up with both at 70, you should probably go for manald. Etched sigil should be pretty easy to get at 70, while the pool of rings is so large that manald will be much more rare compared to at level 27.
Just buy slowly so you don’t keep buying if you get it.
So running the season reusing a current char how does that work? Is that just so you can continue with the same toon name? I assume you want to empty out the chars inventory before doing so or else it'll be sent in mail?
I haven't played my Barb for a couple years so starting over fresh with him for the season sounds like a plan to me. Thanks guys. Looking forward to playing this season with with you all.
Archon is supposed to no longer get the best build for wizard, they have a handful better than Archon now. Given time on live servers the dust will properly settle.
So with the Arcane Orb buffs with recent patches, is that build actually viable now or is it still "go Archon or go home"?
A good way to think about it is all builds are viable now (truthfully they all have been depending on your definition of viable) if they aren't Legacy of Nightmares, even though some of those can still clear hefty content.
There will always be a best build but there's a much smaller gap between them now. Archon builds for example aren't the best anymore but they're still capable of doing very high level rifts.

My favorite Wizard build kinda depends on a particular armor set. It's the one that grants all the fire related buffs / damage. Double up on Magic Weapon (Ignite) and Familiar (Sparkflint), have Black Hole (Blazar) as your big boom attack, and aside from that you just throw Disintegrate (Convergence) all over the place. It's actually really easy to get geared to a point where you barely use any mana. And the damage was stupid huge.

Yes, but on the other hand you know exactly what I meant.

Firebird!
I like Firebird, but I don't like that the playstyle is "kite until you find an elite pack, and then murder everything." I wish the Ignited enemy bonus was just a static mod equal to what you get from Igniting an elite.

The ignite bonus can kick in pretty easily even without an elite. Teleport a couple times, throw your disintegrate into a group of enemies, and it'll stack like crazy.

My experience was that random mobs tend to die pretty quickly so you can't really maintain it at 20 stacks consistently.
Doing some PuG rifts before the new season starts and this one guy is telling everyone how to spec their class. Love it when some rando tells me how to play the game I play for fun.
Any suggestions for my Necro? https://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/See317-1508/hero/92320000
I think I'm pretty much done with him, aside from the grind for ancients or gem levels. But if there's any better choices for the remaining non-set slots that any of you could recommend?
I could swap in one of the Evol rings that dropped tonight for the Justice Lantern and put RoRG in the cube to free up one of the slots that Rathma is using... Have to enchant a socket into it though.
Maybe drop the death nova for a curse since I dumped the Bloodtide Blade...
I really need to finish the game itself as I became hopelessly lost in it at one point.
Because of a lot of real life stuff I quit playing until about season 3. Still I need to sit down and finish the basic game
Yeah I like to log in late for the super awesome powerlevels, but maybe I'll try to be more timely this season. I have no idea how to play a necro, but will be fun to find out!

Edit - and if you do it's easy to power level a new character outside of season anyways so
You keep the items of course, but the saved builds will be gone.

Frozen Orb with DMO is one of the best performers, last I saw, for GRs anyway.
Frozen Orb also works in Tals for torment rifts and bounties.
There's also a variety of Meteor Channeling builds, using either Firebirds or Tals
