Serious question guys, mainly because this thread and Banger.tv are my only sources of metal news since I got rid of reddit and Facebook.
Why does (seemingly) everyone have a hate on for Deafheaven?
Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!

Because non-metal music websites latched onto them as The Only Current Metal Band That Matters, much to the chagrin of metalheads who, even if they like Deafheaven, know that they are not the only metal band in existence or even the most interesting current metal band by a country mile. They also popularized the "atmospheric black metal/blackgaze" style, which has resulted in a glut of imitation BM bands who all sound like Explosions in the Sky + screaming. I think most people hate the hype more so than Deafheaven themselves, who are fine.
I agree. At least I know that I personally hate the hype much more than I dislike Deafheaven. They're alright, kind of mediocre, but in no way offensive. All contrived hype from media outlets or record labels angers me (if I had a dollar for every time I saw the word "groundbreaking" to describe an upcoming album...). The excitement that builds from individual listeners is different, though: that actually makes me curious to hear new albums I might not have otherwise heard. In regards to Deafheaven, while I might not be as plugged in to the metal scene as others since I don't have any social media, it seems to me that there is just a massive disconnect between the contrived hype from websites and the grassroots hype from individual listeners, which I suppose would classify the band as "overrated". And metalheads tend to react badly to things that are overrated...
All these folks trying to be the Hiroo Onoda of the Loudness War...

I'm rather ambivalent on Deafheaven, there's individual songs I like, but as a whole none of their albums grab me and for the most part I think they always seem less than the sum of their parts. Their desire for genre-mixing/bridging far exceed their musical capabilities to deliver it in a satisfactory way. Basically, the majority of their material wares it's inspirations/homages on it's sleeve, but never goes anywhere with them or effectively elaborates on it in a way to make it their own/unique.

To me Deafheaven just felt like drippy, sugary sweet generic shoeglaze guitar lines with black metal rasping. I don't think all their albums are terrible, the first was the worst, but I never really got on the train for them. Then again, I don't have to, they've got a booked schedule without me riding.
I do think that Deafheaven do a cool thing where a lot of their music sounds joyous and tortured at the same time. A lot of atmospheric black metal bands go directly for the anguish and sorrow route, whereas Deafheaven do a lot of major key, euphoric-sounding riffs overlaid with raspy shrieking which is a really weird contrast. The title and artwork of Sunbather is really evocative of their sound. It's not the same old black metal thing, which I do appreciate, but overall I just don't want to listen to it very often. It's odd- they're definitely different, but not in a really memorable way.

Thanks for the responses. I liked Sunbather but didn't really get a charge out of any of their other stuff.

This randomly popped into my head tonight. I couldn't remember the band or song name, so I searched youtube for "metal vocalist with cat". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El8ew2v2zrw

Me really likey that Chapel of Disease track.
You rarely hear death metal that adheres to Sonata-Allegro form. First minute ten, sketch the tonics and root notes of the primary chords with a nice echo delay, next minute elaborate and up the tempo and add second and third notes of triads, 2:11 mark, unleash hell.

Chapel of Disease is a tight band. The Mysterious Ways of Repetitive Art was an interesting, underrated little gem and it sounds like with this new one they're continuing to blow the doors open instead of just xeroxing other old school bands to death.

Somehow I think a live, raw Mayhem record like that might not be the best place to start someone on black metal.
They actually did the studio version of the song, but then again, Attila's vocals aren't exactly representative of black metal as a whole. Still, they dug most of the music.
They recently did "Hammer Smashed Face" as well, and it was cool to see Ryan actually starting to like the vocals during the bridge towards the end. That was the song that made growled vocals start to click with me, as well.

I am really getting back into music, and it's fantastic. I'm also getting into vinyl collecting again and in the last two days I have picked up the Primitive Man/Unearthly Trance split, Fucking Your Creation by Dodsferd, and Unleash the Carnivore by Devourment. I've not listened to the latter two albums yet because I only picked them up today, but they're both picture disks and are nice additions to my small but rapidly growing collection. I also ordered the new Cannabis Corpse because I'm a filthy stoner.
The plan is to pick up metal LPs from my local record store. I'm going to try to stick to death/black/doom metal as they're my favorite genres and it will keep me leashed on what I buy. I'm also going to pick up stuff without listening to it first, because I'm easily turned off by new music if there's something minor that bothers me. Buying an album on vinyl and sitting down to listen to it will force me to be more patient with what I buy rather than dropping an immediate judgement as soon as I hear something I don't like.
I'm also thinking of starting a podcast, but I'll have to wait until I have a larger collection because if I start now I'll rapidly run out of shit to review. I also have to learn how to review music so, y'know.
Do any of you guys collect vinyl? Any tips for a new collector?

Another wave of new stuff...Evoken, Sadist, Einherjer, and Psycroptic!
Update: The Evoken album is fantastic. The Sadist is almost like a Season in Silence part 2, except it's like a concept album about the film Psycho instead of creepy snowman and a cabin.

That's my son's favorite Ghost tune, although recently "Rats" is giving it a run for its money.
It's probably my favorite at the moment. It gets stuck in my head and then won't leave.

I tried every way to make it work but the last train from Worcester to Boston leaves before the show would be over. :(:(:(
Well that settles it. I'll have to bang my head enough for the both of us. I'd better do some warmups.
I request you windmill if at all possible, so that along Mgcw, I can hesh vicariously through you in my preferred manner.

Yeah, right up until it started I was wondering, live or studio? Interesting that it was the studio version with the live album cover.

Uhhhh, wtf that sounds amazing?
Better apparently, each song is based on a separate Hitchcock movie from the looks of it
Demon snowman still wins in my book though.
