Marauders are what's referred to as a "gimmick boss" by Dark Souls fans: An enemy that breaks every single rule of gameplay so far given to you, and never has their gameplay elements repeated at all by any other enemies.

They're often the low point of a game.

Btw, is it just me or do the marauders recover from attacks slightly faster now? I wonder if they changed that to avoid weapon switch spam.

    imagine the demons seeing that.

"Oh jesus he can swim now?"

Of coursw this means there should be water demons, who have been enjoying a relatively Doom Guy free existence for much too long.

I like how in the trailer, you don't really see any demons in the water. Just a big fuckin' shark. Like, they're already water demons, why try to modify perfection

...I fucking love marauders. I love that they force you to deprioritise not prioritise, I love the fights with them. And yeah if anything I found it easier to land two shots on them than in the base campaign.

But holy shit how does anyone beat this dlc on anything above normal. If you did that you are basically a god

Also thank the antichrist the last boss actually has checkpoints and isn’t insanely difficult.

Also it is a serious mark against the dlc that you don’t fight the shark, or at least pat it, since doom guy is theoretically only ridiculously violent against demons

And yeah basically no new weapons or real new enemies makes this dlc a bummer for me. The two new environments looked great, but it still felt a bit like just doom eternal remixed

I haven’t beaten the last boss yet but also presumably
no hint of your citadel or doom mech. They better use that ducking thing for the next dlc!

Also while I like the spirit possession in theory, the enhanced demons are just way too fucking tough, like shrug off a direct bfg tough. I would have preferred if it just gave them a different ability or buffed only damage maybe, but just turning them into bullet sponges is not fun

Decided to get back into Doom mods. Downloaded me some GZDoom and a bunch of wads/pk3's. Started off with Verdant Citadel, which was pretty amazing. It's absolutely gorgeous, had a pretty rockin soundtrack, was paced really well encounter/ammo wise with lots of encounter setups. The map had a great flow, too. Not quite linear, but I never ended up lost or anything. It was cool seeing how the level wound around itself. Died once to a cyberdemon, but I probably could've beaten it without dying if I wasn't so rusty. Seems like it'd be a fun map to play with a gameplay mod like Brutal Doom or something. Anyway, I downloaded a bunch of Cacodemon award winners from the past couple years, plus the stuff in the OP, so I should be set for the foreseeable future. Might also see if I can get some coop going with some of my friends, dunno if I can do that with GZDoom or if I need to get Zandronum or something.

    Anyway, Verdant Citadel, highly recommended.

The fact that this DLC contains no new weapons or enemies is kind of wild to me? Like those are kind of the two things I would want most from a first-person shooter expansion pack and this doesn't have either

I'm also not hearing any talk about the big setpiece I wanted most from the main game being present
getting to pilot one of the big mechasuits to punch a giant demon

so between all that and the difficulty I think I might just pass this by until both parts are out and it's on sale

...also for real why did they invest time in constructing that weird battle mode and not just building out a survival horde mode? Like I might never uninstall the game if it had one of those, not sure why they didn't run with that and build it into the Ripatorium or whatever

Been playing, haven't beat the 1st level yet because my dumbass picked Nightmare.

The combat is damn tight. You have to absolutely be on top of everything all at once. The arenas thus far have been similar to the best arenas the OG game had to offer (I loved the 1st fight on Final Sin).

I've got the Marauder Loop down, and you can juggle them indefinitely if you are quick. I use hot swap and I can super shotgun/ballista them until they die.

Yeah there are several arena fights that go on forever and once again I would like to express my extreme displeasure at possessed barons of hell

    Bullet sponge is an understatement

Oh and don’t forget the arenas where two totems sometimes show up, along with a freakin arch vile

Also what the heck are the like blue spirit torso armours you can pick up in some levels?

Even on easy the extra life mode achievement is going to suck, I’m practicing on easy and still get fucking killed multiple times in some of the major battles

One instance was me not realising an arachnotron was possessed and therefore not paying much attention to it until it was too late

Blue Torso armors give you the full 150 armor.

Possed baronso fh ell arep retty easy. They're bullet spongy, but whatever, so are normal barons. dindt really bother me.

Now possed cyber mancubi, those are fuckers! at least you can still shatter their armor, but you cant break their guns and woof.

Shield mod on the minigun helps! Barons cant do anyhting if you're at range, so it's pretty easy to just keep em at said range, i find. Then you hammer em apart. Plasma cannon with heat burst is still V. Good for keeping mobile and chewing them up too. I mean, you're not wrong they're bullet sponges, but they're not THAT bad i find. \

Upto the third mission currently - Relatively blitzed the second mission, then kept screwing up the miniboss fight at the end. Whoopsie!

Doom the Way id Did is a 27 level megawad with the intention of mimicking the design style of the original developers. I think they've done a good job of it so far, but I'm only like 5 or 6 missions in. It (and the sequel, Doom 2 the Way id Did) both won Cacowards for being great.

    https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_2_the_Way_id_Did

There's links to the download page for both of them on the wiki page (or from a quick googling). Looks like they also did an Ultimate Doom the Way id Did as an expansion to Doom the Way id Did.

I also started up Going Down, which basically has you taking an elevator to the top of a UAC skyscraper and slowly working your way down to Hell level by level. It's been fun so far, with some fun tricks and gimmicks. It's also a Cacoward winner.

I’m very much team Eternal but one change I hate from 2016 is that the pinky demons in eternal are much harder to dodge around, they seem to curve and hit you unless you dodge at the absolute last minute, which is also too risky, so instead I tend to just blood punch them which doesn’t feel as elegant

Also Im definitely not going to be able to get the 5 extra lives achievement for extra life mode in the dlc, I’m playing on easy and still dying a fair amount in level 2

I’ve died like 5 time on the mini boss in level two because of how it slows you down, people complained about the purple ooze but at least you could see that, with the boss you have no idea what’s slowing you down until it’s too late. I’m guessing it’s when the boxes hit you or something, but it’s hard to predict and just gets me killed

Yeah, they were around. They're generally chumps because you can just blood punch em and then feed em a couple of rockets and down they go, no muss no fuss. Actually, you can just flatout bloodpunch a Cyber and then super shotty them and they're usually straight aviable for a glory kill. Mancubi are a lot more muscly

The first one appears in the rescue hayden mission. ARC i think it is?

So cool trick: It turns out that the Microwave beam will not only stun the summoner ghost, it'll stun anything that's possessed. So if you've got enough fodder around to reload it, you can use the beam to lock down the possed demon and turn them into chutney.

Marauders are both not as difficult as people make them out to be, and not a "gimmick boss" Dark Souls style. Bed of Chaos and Ancient Wyvern they are not. They are a subversion of existing game play, but they still require you to use the same abilities and weapons to kill them. I think people get in their own head about Marauders and overthink them badly. Every enemy in the latest Doom games has an optimal way to kill it, the Marauder is just a lot more pedantic about you knowing the optimal way. Which is kind of the point.

I think they are great and I am glad id made them and doubled down in the expansion. As the PC Gamer article said, id voted Yes on Proposition Marauder

One thing about fighting barons I've learned is don't be afraid to light them on fire even if they're the only thing you can hit with the flame. The amount of damage you're going to do to them will make up for the lack of multiple targets.

Made it through one of the trials thanks to an Arch-Vile sitting next to a Doom Hunter while I still had BFG ammo. Bad choice, muchachos!

Man, some of these Doom 2 custom maps are too scary for me. It's kind of amazing how good OG Doom is at being scary even when you're loaded to the teeth with powerful weapons. Some dark hallways with flickering lights, some creepy music, some demon snarls through the walls and the tension just skyrockets until it's unpleasant.

Also, man, I saw some PSX Doom for the first time and man, they really leaned into the horror for that game. That soundtrack is spooky as hell, as well as those sound effects. And the colored lighting is super effect. Just watching this clip of one of the levels was enough to creep me out. I guess someone recreated PSX Doom as a wad for PC Doom, as well as the Doom 64 wad someone did.
