I grabbed Prodeus and spent a good chunk of last night playing it. It is so good. So good.
The best way I found to describe it to my friends was: Imagine you're living in an alternate history where instead of making Quake 2 in 1997, id software made Doom 3.
Doom Eternal was the shooter I wanted this year, but Prodeus is the shooter I didn't know I needed this year.
Also, because I was shopping for retro shooters, I also grabbed Amid Evil.

I really want to get it, but I hear a recent update broke ultrawide support. So I'll hold off a bit until it is more complete, or maybe once it leaves early access.
This DLC is for real just spent about 30 minutes on this trial fight.
Want to play co-op games? Feel free to hit me up!

I spent a lot of time playing Prodeus this weekend, and I think the only weakness I can put on it is enemy variety.
Guns are fantastic and are essentially a ‘greatest hits’ of id software guns with some neat alt fires. Probably the best implementation of stick grenades I’ve ever used. I love the lightning gun and rail gun being combined by the alt fire. Mowing down enemies with the chaingun is delightful. There’s 18 total and I think I’ve seen half of them? So great.
But the enemy selection gets boring. There’s the human, the shotgun human, the chaingun human, the Imp, the pinky that seems to have taken steroids, the Cacodemon, and then a blue demon and something with wings that I only ever saw once and killed it before it did anything.
They really need half a dozen other enemies at the least to spice up fights.
Also played some more Doom Eternal and why did they let Pinkies pull u-turns mid charge? What the fuck.

More will come I believe. I think they really need to add a rifle Zombie that would fulfill a similar role as the shotgunner.
Yeah I hate how they made pinkies almost impossible to dodge attack in eternal. It turned them from a neat little mini game into basically the thing I save blood punches for
I still find that a little imprecise and they just turn around a tiny but too quickly. Like a few frames would make all the difference

Finished the Prodeus Early Access campaign.
That is, hands down, the most fun shooter I've played in a long time.
I love the new Dooms and they have permanent real estate on my hard drive, and now Prodeus sits alongside them. My complaints about enemy variety quickly went away in the later levels of the campaign. They even have demon animosity, where the normal and blue demons don't like each other. That was great.
My only real complaint is what kind of asshole waits until the last level to give you the super shotgun?

Beats saving it for the sequel.
I mean obviously there’s much more coming. Feels like this is their ‘Episode 1 shareware’ kinda thing. It only took 4 hours to go through everything, and there’s a lot of guns missing, so it’s obviously not the whole game.

I just had a look at this and looks really cool, they’re hoping to bring it to consoles too which is neat cos that’s where I do most of my gaming, so I might wait for the full release
The second secret encounter switch bugs out if you do anything in the level after finding it, making going back to that encounter impossible without restarting the whole level.
Yeah, AG1 will just stay unbeaten until they fix that shit. I'm not redoing the level.

Finally, a new Master Level is out, Super Gore Nest.
Comes with a new classic mode difficulty, where you start with only the combat shotgun and nothing else and have to find everything throughout the level, plus Extra Life and Ultra Nightmare difficulties, also you can unlock a golden combat shotgun skin by completing some combination of these.
Something is off about Doom Eternal's weapon assortment and I don't know what. The rocket launcher sucks, for one. It feels like a tempo loss when using it.

None of them have enough ammo capacity and they all hit like a wet fart unless you're either shooting weak points or using the weapon the enemy is specifically weak against

Lock on with the rocket launcher is extremely strong. In fact the rocket launcher in general, on nightmare, felt like the most powerful and reliable weapon, capable of ending enemies without dealing with the whole weakpoint business. The super shotgun also.
(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.

If I am remembering correctly, they purposely slowed the speed of the rockets and the fire rate and increased the damage each rocket did compared to 2016.
Beyond that, the guided rocket is absolutely useless. Lock on burst is the shit though and once fully upgraded you can annihilate demons with it. A single burst either kills or staggers everything that isnt a super heavy.

Ended up going Sentinel Armor (accidentally) for the last phase of the Samur fight. I'm sort of leaning towards not liking Possessed Demons very much - the problem is they basically exist to give the Microwave Beam mod a reason to exist, but that weapon shares ammo with standard plasma (and thus overcharge plasma) as well as the Ballista. So in a fight with possessed demons, you basically get stuck not being able to use the plasma gun at all, because if you run out the about 50 cells it takes to kill the spirit, you have to basically do the entire fight over but with a lot less consumables lying around.
Story thoughts:
In hindsight...duh. Of course the leader of the demons would have to be an entity the demons would fear. At any point the Doom Slayer pretty obviously could walk into a room of demons, say "you work for me now, let's go get some souls" and they'd follow him. It's just that would never, ever happen.
But I'm super curious on the mechanics of this: is the leader of the demons now embodied as the Doom Slayer because the Doom Slayer exists, or was it always something which looked like the Doom Slayer who was once mirrored by some entity to create it?

Theory:
They make a big deal in the codex of the Father extracting the dark lord's life sphere and throwing away the body... why do we as the doom slayer seem to exist across space and time?

I like this, because it also ties in with something else:
Why did Father, of all it's dimensions, choose to go keep an eye on Earth specifically?
The whole reason the MW mod exists is because they took the stun bomb away and gave us the (better, IMO) ice bomb. So they had to come up with something. The biggest problem is that it forces you to focus on a single enemy continuously without the ability to disengage. Which when combined with the properties of Spirits means disengaging will likely get you killed by a stronger possessed enemy.
The other big problem is that heat blast is still miles better than the microwave mod. Just like how the lock on mod is miles better than the guided rocket mod for the rocket launcher.
What I think the microwave beam should be replaced with: you know how enemies explode when you kill them with the plasma rifle? How about a mod that works off of that. Recently electrified enemies get a damage bonus when shot with the plasma rifle (for a few seconds), first 3 points increases the damage, next 6 points increases radius of explosion, mastery is a temporary unlimited ammo (like 3 seconds, non stacking) after a plasma explosion kills a nearby enemy.

Yeah I feel the same way. I never used the microwave beam mod at all in the regular campaign because of those limitations, and this whole expansion just felt like a massive exercise in lugging the beam mod around and hoarding my energy ammo because running out of it meant certain death if spirits continually repossessed enemies if you couldn't kill them in time.

Thank you thread people for alerting me to Prodeus. I will eventually get it, but I'm still playing through Dusk and Ion Fury, which are both also really good. I freaking love this current retro fps trend.

What people have done already is amazing. Take for example this map, which is super epic, it's like playing an action movie:

What is the obsession that game developers have with golden weapons? They always look like shit. It's just a lazy retexture.
