I mentioned this in a previous thread, and this is an honest question, how much are we willing to pay for a game? The price to buy games has stayed steady at $60ish dollars for the last 20+ years. I think it's a fair assumption that the cost to make them over that period of time has increased. Would we rather pay 70, 80, 90 for a game or keep the price at 60 and have the companies make up the difference in micro transactions?
And no, before anyone mentions it, I am not trying to paint Bungie/Activision as some poor about to go under company that is struggling for cash. But they are a business and how many businesses, no matter what they make, have not seen price increases in approximately 20 years? Something has to give somewhere. Either you get them supplementing the money they make this way or they charge more for games over all.
I guess my question is this: Would you pay $100 as a standard price for a game if you knew it included absolutely everything that would ever be in that game? Or would you rather keep paying $60 and have the option of spending more?
This is basically what all games do now, though? Most games I buy have a season pass or something attached that I end up spending close to $100 on total.
Also, I guarantee that if the most money to be gained by publisher/devs was in increasing the base cost of the game, they would have done that ages ago. Microtransactions are shoehorned in games because they make waaaaay more money than simply increasing the base cost of a game by $20-30.
And you get the same thing with lootboxes. The lootbox model is becoming popular, and games are switching from different models to it, because it makes more money. And it makes more money because it exploits the same psychological weaknesses as things like slot machines. Which are super profitable too.
Intermittent reinforcement and all that jazz really hit many people hard.
I mean, not to blow anyone's mind or anything but, skinner box addiction mechanics underly most games like this, even if they don't have an explicit financial aspect. Random rewards are addicting and the games industry knows it. Which is why crits are satisfying, and increasingly rare gear drops are satisfying, and the "level-up" notification is satisyfing, and weapon procs are satisfying, etc. Mainstream games are saturated with them now. It's definitely more dangerous when money is involved, sure. But, I mean, once you start looking for all the many random rewards intended to promote addictive behavior in modern AAA gaming, it's just everywhere. Psychological addiction is how they keep us playing! It's just getting more and more brazen is all.
That said, I'm not trying to yell at anyone here. I hope you all enjoy the launch and perhaps I will see you online!
Kinda the whole point right there. Kind of a big difference. Running like a literal digital slot machine is a bit on the sketchy side.
Your time is valuable too. My point is skinner box mechanics are sketchy in any context. I'm not sure I'd agree that "psychological addiction is good unless there's money involved." Nor would I argue there's a huge and important moral difference between "wasting your time on addictive mechanics" and "wasting your money on addictive mechanics." Time is money friend! If you want to ding them for loot boxes, you have to ding them for the entire underlying psychological addiction apparatus that enables it.
And yet gambling is both more regulated and rather more destructive on more people's lives then video games, so I really don't buy this at all.
Having worked in that industry for a decade now, if you'd like I can regale you with metric f*cktons of info about most layers of the US's regulation trees and how they effect the bottom line of both the purveyors of "adult gaming" and the people that engage in it, along with the outlets and means for getting people help if they need it.
I envy people that are only on one or two CCTV feeds/cameras at a time. In my primary work room/environment I'm covered by more than ten but less than twenty (yes, I have to be that circumspect on public channels) all damn day.
I'm sure there's a blooper reel of me picking my ass or something equivalent set to music and about 8 different angles. They could probably sell it as performance art.

Hmm...the Rockstar stuff if limited to 3 per week and 24 total.
May just switch to Rockstar for a bit (I average 1 can of Sugar Free Red Bull a day when I work) and see how it compares to Red Bull and get some loot.
It'll probably all be shitty and nothing more than infusion fuel, but if I'm already ingesting poison, might as well get a loot roll for doing it.

2. Added a new "Active/Waitlist for [PA]" section to the Mega-Roster so that forumers beyond our 100/100 can be represented. Does this create a second-class-citizen sort of scheme? I hope not. Just want some order so that formerly-inactive-now-active people aren't stuck down in Legacy and new people know where to add themselves.
3. If you're listed in Legacy only and you're active again, or if you have any questions or requests, just PM me. I've been fielding these things for three years and I'm always happy to help.

Tomorrow's going to be a real rough day at work, haha! Damn, so I was actually late to the launch at Gamestop. And I got there at 11. Turns out I missed out on the Todd Toys figures (well, Titans and Hunters, at any rate), which kind of bites because I totally would have picked up a Titan in VoG armor! Oh well, I'm sure I'll find one kicking around at some point.
Meanwhile, fuck this 6.2gb patch! I reeeeeally wish that you could download updates ahead of time in anticipation of buying a game. I'd have had this shit downloading while I was out getting my copy.
I was getting 12-15mb per second and now it's halted at 4.445gb and 5 hours to finish.
Btw, to anyone sending party invites around: I'm probably gonna just kick it solo for the hour or so I play before bed, because the wife is sleeping nearby. Tomorrow/Thu/this weekend will be a different story.
