Black Library books generally stick with 'Terminator 2' level of violence, as opposed to 'Saving Private Ryan' levels of realistic, brutal violence, or outright gorn the 'The Green Inferno.' Given the general, broadly stereotyped tastes of gamers, I can imagine it's slightly necessary to say, '-no graphic descriptions of gratuitous violence.' to make sure people stay on the level of that first one.

But what kind of stories? short ones? small novel ones? What?[/quote]
The link to the submission page says short stories, although aside from the one paragraph summary and 500 word writing sample, they're not getting into more detail. Although from what little I remember of Inferno, the short stories really did run the gamut so they might be considering everything from ultra short stories up to small novellas.

I recently read a Deathwatch book that, basically, had an anime tentacle porn scene in it. I was surprised by that. It was not described in super detail, but what was left unsaid was enough for one who is aware of it.

I mean, there were no tentacles, but it was close enough.

I think enlisting with the Deathwatch carries with it the unspoken understanding that your risks of tentacle rape go up like 500x. They’re the thin black line protecting the Imperium from the threat of Anime in all its awful forms.

Knowing how doom and gloom most of the Imperium is, it's probably very spoken. They let you know in very plain language that joining the Deathwatch means your chances of meeting your end fulfilling the sexual desires of a tentacle monster go way up.

This is a really uncomfortable tangent y’all.

Anyways, I’m almost done with Black Legion, and damn it’s so good. Just let ADB do all the writing for traitor Marines from now on, please.

ANYHOO, today was a show battle between Adeptus Custodes and Thousand Sons. Sons won via objectives, but it was a lot closer than the naysayers thought would happen when they got an early lead. Also, the Sons brought Magnus.

Anyhoo, some stuff on the Sons....

Reroll 1s on the invulnerable saves is out. I didn’t catch what new aura we got.
Legion Trait sounded like +6″ spell range (first cast per model).
Dark Matter Crystal (a relic) allows you to remove a unit close to the bearer from the board and redeploy the unit via deep strike.
Dark Hereticus is still in and there are plenty of more spells.
Aspiring Sorcerers can take other spells (unsure if you can take it on top of Smite or if you drop Smite).
Glamour of Tzeentch spell gives one of your unit -1 to hit protection.
Doombolt spell does some damage and reduces target units move.
Temporal Manipulation is another spell but I have no idea of what it does.
Tzaangor Shaman is an elite choice and not HQ. The Shaman can reroll a Psychic test (probably the Elixir from AoS).
Tzaangor Enlightened can take bows and shoot magical arrows that auto-wound on to hit rolls of 6+. Assault 1d3 shots.
Lord of Forbidden Lore Warlord Trait give an additional spell.
There is a stratagem that allows a unit to set up in the webway or something like that. Deep strike. Works on Tzaangors at least.
Veterans of the Long War is still in!
Mutalith Vortex Beast buffs nearby units. Like reroll charge rolls if you’re in the 6″ aura.

I really like the looks of the Primaris models. If I wanted to do a full Primaris army (knowing full well that it would be losing out on a lot of options from regular space marines) would I gain more benefit from the Dark Angels codex or the Space Marines codex?

I picked up an older GW black plastic case today with a weird cube shape that conveniently matches the dimensions of Sabol army transport foam layers. Was able to fit a bunch of pluck foam in there and finally have a safe home for my bigger tyranids.
Winged hive tyrants, sporocysts and trygons are a bear to transport, but I finally have something better than a cardboard box that won’t slide forward and dump everything out if I hit the brakes too hard.

Given how balls crazy Hellblasters are, my uneducated guess says that DA get more plasma shinnanigins to play with.

Speaking of cases, I've got a Battle and Crusade case, and they're great, but a while back I got ahold of one of the older cases that originally shipped with red foam:

    yxpAYlD.jpg

The only problem is, this one didn't have any foam in it when I got it (it was part of a deal and was essentially free). I'd like to start using it, but if I wanted to buy three replacement foam trays to fill it from a website like KR I'd be looking at around $13 per tray, so just shy of $40 (plus whatever shipping would be). At that price I might as well just go down to my FLGS and spend an extra ten bucks and get a Skirmish case that has foam that is compatible with what I already have.

I keep hearing that Hellblasters are so amazing but at 33 points a model that everyone will immediately shoot first, how is that true? Even with the "shoot when you die" banner I feel like my problem playing elite footslogging armies is things shooting you from afar anyway, so there doesn't tend to be anything you can make a death throes shot at when the basilisk kills you from across the table...?

    What am I missing?

Hellblasters have a 30” rapid fire gun, so have a 36” threat range, if something can shoot them there’s a good chance they can shoot back. 33 points a model isn’t so bad when they have two wounds. A unit of 5 guys is a 165 ten wound unit capable of a maximum of 20 damage before buffs and they are capable of pulling multiple roles, they can engage heavy targets very easily, are effective against high invuln targets (like Magnus or Morty) because of weight of fire and can effectively kill elite troops like terminators or custodes.

Plus they are very easy to put into cover, fit into Gullimans aura very easily and under the banner they can punish an opponent with up to four damage when they did.

Edit: there’s also that dark angels strategem that’s give them +1 damage, you know for when your mate brings a warhound and you really want to trash it with 165 points.

Basically plasma is king in 8th and hellblasters have not only plasma but super plasma (-4 ap instead of -3).

Not going to repeat everything Norgoth said but they are hard to budge. If you are blood angels put it near the fnp priest guy. All the sudden in cover you have 2 wound, 2+ save, with fnp units that put out heavy duty plasma fire power.

Give them a reroll so they don't kill themselves.

I have seen them smoke out landraiders, knights, termis, maulerfiends, defilers, and you get the idea.

I mean I pay 135 pts for a 5 man plasma havoc squad and consider it a deal and they are half the wounds.

It’s using the ITC champions set up, hence the odd number of poxwalkers. I’ll be summoning in a poxbringer to buff the Crawlers and deepstriking the tree so they can now fallback and shoot. Our local meta has been creeping down on the number of long range anti-tank weapons as people have stopped playing the primarchs or similar big targets, which means I feel confident bringing Morty back in. Incase there is something threatening I can deepstrike him in this list (everyone seems to think that will be errated. I’m not so sure that’s the case, but it’s legal for now!) to keep him safe until I can bring him in. I’d rather not have to do this because this list is tight on CP

Everything else is pretty self explanatory. Cultists Pox wall with typhus and Necrosius. Crawler block causing trouble midfield, blightspawn and their rhino to play around with the number of drops. Sneaky melta on the rhino so it can actually do something once it drops it’s cargo. Far too many characters have died from a rhino driving point blank with its melta.

    Looks good.

I think you can probably get at least 1 more cp in there splitting your DP into an vanguard with your blightspawn. You already have 3 hqs, get that cp you never know when you might need it.

Its 3. Normally I would split those blightspawn off, but I needed to fit the tree into the list, and the only way to get them is to take a fort detachment or bring slimux, and I’d rather give up 2cp to save 165 points and be able to deepstrike the tree where I need it.

Huh, yeah I don't play ITC rules very much though that is good to know as we get closer to NoVA though I am still not sure if I will do the tournament or just stick to doubles/trios or narrative games.

*looks at his old CSM* I still also have to rebase basically my entire army since GW made normal marines on a 30 mm instead of a 25 mm base.

It isn't a hard limit, it is recommend that at 2000 points you have about 3 detachments.

I am not sure I have seen a single person hold to that in my group. Its one of those I think people took recommended and decided it was a rule. I will grabbed the full wording when I get home though.

I mean I usually bring 3 detachments but depending on my list I can sometimes fit 4.

I wasn’t a fan of the 3 Detachment limit initially, but have grown to like it. It puts a minor limit on what you bring and provides a balance of CP vs efficiency. The only change I’d like to see is putting a 0-1 fortification in brigades and battalions so you don’t waste a whole Detachment for a what I don’t doubt is going to be a lot more important as fortifications get fleshed out.

Brigades need a bigger bonus, as there are many armies that can do 3x battalion for around the same cost as a brigade (Or cheaper), get just as much CP, and not have to waste points on FA/HS that are basically dead weight. Or ITC needs to adopt ETC standard of no duplicate detachments, though I prefer stronger brigades as they encourage more diversified armies.

Ideally they rework the entire manner in which CPs are generated, because it seems completely insane both from a mechanical standpoint to reward horde armies, the best armies, with more rerolls and strategems; and from a fluff standpoint to say that large, sprawling groups of imperial guard conscripts are more effectively commanded or better suited to executing complex strategies than Custodes Wardens or Grey Knight Terminators or Deathwatch Veterans or etc. etc.

I think the battalion detachment being +3 is very much built on making people want to take troops at the start of 8th when there was no obsec for them. Now I think folks will take troops no matter what because of obsec. It is so important to hold those points in most games that having a troop contingent is always going to be in your army. Thing is I can get +3 cps for about 300 pts as chaos using cultist and cheap HQs. Guard can do it for less. So stacking those CPs for some armies is very easy.

I think maybe a redo of the whole system or diversifying it might be a good thing for a chapter approved. Some armies seem to have endless CPs now. Guard, Ultramarines, and Dark Angels off the top of my head. Others are the opposite and just burn through them crazy fast anyway to keep up.

I love the CP idea though and stratagems. It gives me a lot of tools and makes me make hard choices on what I do.

Some sort of Defender Bonus like increased cover saves or -1 to hit would be nice.

I always thought CP, the measure of how many strategic resources you could bring to a battle, being tied to your least powerful units made no sense. You wouldn’t waste the resources on random troop fodder, you’d save it for your elite and heavy units.

The problem is if you start applying more and more bonuses to specific detachments, you fall into the 7th edition trap with formations. While there were some cool and fluffy ones, a few completely ruined the balance.

Personally I'd either adjust the base value of CPs, so e.g. horde armies start with 0, elite armies with 6+ and moderately spammy armies somewhere in that spectrum, or maybe tie CPs to points spent (not number of models) on HQ units.

Something needs to be done. I saw this as a possible high tier Death Guard list. I don't have the models or inclination at the moment to buy them, but, it's essentially 10 pbcs, epidemius, 2 poxbringers, and 2 demon princes. Just roll forward with 10 Plagueburst Crawlers and burn everything alive.

There's counters to it, of course, but the fact that it's probably still a good overall list makes my eyes bug. PBCs are probably too cheap.

Is emailing GW a thing that works, lol? Honestly I feel like all of these problems are obvious, I'm not sure how they got released in the first place but I imagine the rules writers had to serve two masters and some other priority won out - probably the desire to have clear, concise lists with slots as a reaction to the craziness of 7E formations?

We'll see what they do in the future balance passes, I wasn't impressed with the first Chapter Approved but who knows. In the Custodes preview articles they keep mentioning things like "we gave them a 6+ FNP and made their 5++ into a 4++ and we made all their units objective secured etc. because elite armies really struggle" and the whole time I'm thinking, wait guys, GK Paladins have the exact same statline and problems (and cost more, lol) so all these same problems apply to them and they need the same solutions...?

There had to be some designer looking at the streamed Custodes exhibition match and seeing that 2,000 point list starting with 4 command points (and then immediately in the first two turns going to 0 because for some reason the Custodes strategems include many 2- and 3- pointers...) and knowing it's stupid.

Facebook is a good way to do it politely. They respond and take feedback.

Also the play testers exist. FLG are some of the US ones. Maybe reach out to them. They are also the folks who basically set the ITC rules.

Did you also fill out the survey this year? It had a lot of open ended questions and chances for feedback.

Played that game with that list.

My opponent brought space wolves with a melee unit of terminators, a unit of terminators with combi plasma, two of the veteran assault marine squads, some Melee buff characters, Bjorne and then filled out the rest with whatever the space wolf tactical equivalent is.

That just wasn’t enough to kill Mortarion. Sending in all his characters, Bjorne, and the non-Melee terminators (after unloading plasma) left Morty on seven wounds, at which point he flew out of combat and my blightspawn stepped in to kill everything off.

Is there any merit at all to running a Death Guard army list that's heavy on plague marines?

Just getting back into 40k and starting with DG, it seems like of all the units they field plague marines aren't really featured heavily in any of the lists I've seen.

Oh found the wording about detachments, it is suggested for organized events that 1-2k armies have 2-3 detachments. Yeah, it is a suggestion but up to folks and how they want. I mean no surprise ITC has that, you can abuse come stuff in list building if you want, but not required at all.

It's funny, I saw Thousand Sons guys complaining about the Custodes vs. 1k Sons demo match - that the super low model count Custodes army had more marines on the table than the Thousand Sons, lol. The player won, but he did it entirely due to tzaangors, cultists and demons.

I have seen spread out 5-model units of plague marines do some very mean things with blight launchers

I've also seen battle reports of a 20 model unit walking behind poxwalkers using a stratagem that makes them unable to be shot if they're not the closest unit and it seemed like a fun way to get them up the board.

I tried Fabius Bile. Well my sorc being a proxy. I figured he would go really with possessed as he can't finish one off if you roll a 6 since it is a single mortal wound. Termis could work well with this as well. Also Bile is actually a really dangerous unit on his own. Tough, strong, and heals!

My opponents were a Ravenwing army of just black knights, Sameul, and some support like an apothecary also an Ravenwing Champ. A Nidzilla with carnifexs. And a Death Guard but he was so slow he didn't really do much. Actually he won though because he had three objectives at the end. At least I think he won. We all kind of forgot the mission and punched each other.

First turn the fexes moved towards me since we were close. He hit my cultist wall and didn't even break through. On my turn I jumped out of my rhino with Bile, the champ, and the lord. Moved up to a point I can charge and shoot the tyrant and a fex. Moved my fiend into the fex that went into the cultist.

Killed the fex with the fiend with just the fist. The possessed got punched with an interrupt but most lived. They got the fex down to two wounds and my lord stepped up. Killed the fex with my lord. Which means he killed a monstrous creature. I chaos booned him because why not? It was a fun game anyway.

I rolled box cars! Free Daemon Prince go! Top it off he was my warlord but I was using the Alpharius buff. He later kills the Hive Tyrant.

I basically spent the rest of the game chaos booning folks for shits and giggles. Bile by the end had 3 buffs. It was hilarious.

By the end my army had finished off most of the nids, two black knight squads, sameul, and the apothecary on a bike.

Overall my army played well and it was a good game. Bile is a beast btw and people should probably fear him. Buffing units is fun though a risk.

My maulerfiend is performing exactly the way I thought he would. If he gets into combat, shit dies. Otherwise he absorbs a rather large amount of fire letting my army do its thing.

Also still considering maybe starting an AoS army. But still have 0 idea on what to get.
