Unless we are talking Deathguard where helbrutes do not suffer a penalty for firing heavy weapons and moving or advancing and firing assault weapons.

Also putting combibolters on the fist work really well with brutes because they do gain the 18" double tap as well.

I've been running my brutes in pairs, both with multimelta, combi bolters and fist. I use them in tandem and they basically bum rush a valuable tank. If even one gets into combat there going to deal massive damage to basically anything that's not a superheavy, and they get to fire the melta unimpeded on the way in.

It helps that when your playing Mortarion all your opponents fire goes there instead.

Had my first proper match of 8th edition this weekend - Eldar vs Orks.
The Orks wiped the Eldar off the board.
Man gretchin of the match was one of my Killa Kans with a rokkit launcha, which hit and wounded every single turn, whether advancing or not.

I am on the last wing of my heldrake. This thing is so detailed. I did also finally get the base armor done on my last metal raptor. Shit I forgot hot detailed those are and how I didn't really pain them when I didn't ages ago.

This is going to be a neat model when I am done.

The heldrake was one of many chaos models I hated when I started, but I like it more whenever I see it on the table

Actually a lot of the zoomed in images of models on GW's site gave me a bad impression. I felt the same way about helbrutes and daemon princes too but I like mine now

Well that's unfortunate. Just got my Blightlords, and among other things, they only come with 3 bubotic axes so you're short even if you have one armed with the flail. Oh, and the way shoulders are setup, it looks like the pads will need to be magnetized. Hard to do a full inventory until they're off the sprue, though.

Edit: Looks like 11 arms that need shoulder pads, and 11 shoulder pads available. Definitely 3 Baleswords and 3 Bubotic Axes. So you're not going to have a full squad of one or the other, unless you buys two sets or green stuff one. Need to get everything off the sprue and start dry fitting so I can figure out which magnets everything needs.

On chaos infantry, I always use a green stuff tentacle for their melee weapon arm. That way, I don't have to make any swaps and "tentacle arms are power axes" (or whatever) is, I think, an acceptable proxy.

Oooh, I might actually be able to combine that with a press mold and get the axe teeth sticking out of the tentacle! Thanks for the advice, definitely going to give that a shot.

So there is a slight chance that my friend will get into 40K which is very surprising because he just dropped money to make a 300 point Infinity army but he keeps talking about 40K.

So to prepare for the possibility I was looking at upgrading my Necrons. I only have stuff from when they were just mindless death machines bent on taking back all that was theirs and then some so I only have Warriors, Immortals, a Scarab, Destroyers, and some Lords.

I was looking for a new codex but I couldn't find anything under the Necron section on the 40K website. Did something change?

The idea is that Mortarion acts effectively a huge target soaking as much fire as possible. The non-DG casters are there to heal him and get him into the battle lines as soon as possible. Meanwhile my cultists hold objectives and act as screens for the psyker spam.

I had some success with a similar list, it just takes so much effort to take Mortarion down that your other threatening peices (the tank, the brutes, the DP) can act as they want.

Assignments for the first month of the campaign went out today. First games for me are verse GK. Stupid mortal wound spam. But also the key is we are to make fluffy armies. And for that I can play some fun stuff. First mission is suppose to be them walking into a daemonic summoning area and has no objectives (kill points only) and is only 1k which means a few bodies for GKs.

This list is more fluff than power. If you notice all the units are made up of 6 or multiples of 6. The drake is the lords "mount" in the fluff and I am finishing painting it. Biggest issue will be big enemies with high toughness. Hopefully the raptors and the drake can help along with the brute. The bigger thing there are tons of bodies which will make it hard for GK to fight at 1k points.

The second game is tactical escalation of the Malestrom and I am going with a bit more fluffy and bringing the big guns. Still most things in 6s.

General thoughts are the brute, the defiler, and the fiend escort the DP up the board. Plasma havocs are for infiltrating. Noise marines hold the back and the cultist are bubble wrap.

This list is heavy on infantry and I kind of love that. Ugh I need to build more actual noise marines but I can't find good prices on grav guns and I am not sure what third party gun would look good since the GW ones are fine cast and fuck that.

500 points. If you want a cheap way to get about 1k of units get the starter set. The SM and DG come to about 1k points for about 60 bucks if you split it with someone.

Force composition requirements are so lax right now that you can just grab one of any unit you want as a -1 CP detachment and have a legal, battleforged list.

I guess the minimum would be 1 Inquisitorial Acolyte for 8 points?

So you can pick any number you want without worrying about the force org chart, but most armies aren't going to have fun with one unit on the board while their opponent playing IG has five.

This will give you two 1k pt armies, the full rule book but some out of date indexes. I would vote to replace those with the actual codexes.

This is still the best deal out there for starting though.

From there just pick up stuff you want in small pieces off ebay.

The ad mech one could potentially be legal if you run the rangers/vanguard as two units of five. That would give you an HQ and two units of troops, the minimum needed for the patrol detachment, which is probably the smallest detachment that could feasibly be an army.

I haven't played 40k since like 3rd or 4th edition. I remember the Necrons had just gotten an update when I quit so it has been a while.

Only reason I'm hung up on points is because I want to make sure my friends and I can spend a minimum amount to get functioning armies and play.

Orks is also illegal, having no HQ unit.

So played some more games with Mortarion today. He is really incredibly strong. He's this weird catch 22. Either your commit to trying to kill him and he basically tanks the alpha strike for your army, who then get to hit back hard, or you ignore him and he kills all your shit.

Both games I played today my opponents went for option one, couldn't kill him (or even drop him below 10 wounds), and I got to kill all their stuff anyway and have the rest of my army holding objectives.

My first game was against imperial guard and whilst he did a good job of clearing out my cultists Mortarion systematically went around killing tanks, basically rolling up his battle line.

Second game was against Eldar. Mortarion charged and killed his war walkers, then next turn charged his avatar in amongst his gunline whilst I fired on his units who had spent their time trying to kill Morty. At one point I used The Dead Walk on my poxwalkers and absorbed an entire units of guardians. At the end of that game I tabled my opponent and I had lost a daemon prince, two cultists and a plauge marine.

A huge part of it was taking a CSM Terminator Sorc with warptime to double move Morty. Being able to position to kill whatever is most threatening to him right away is a huge boon . If you can get into their line, kill that threat and then bounce from target to target with moving and charging it snowballs really quickly. Yes, cool you have a lascannon dev squad or a knight or a land raider or something, but uh oh here comes Morty turn one to kill it, better hope your brought something else to kill him.

Orks have boyz, nobz, dread and a painboy. Two elites a heavy support and a troops choice.

It’s pretty easy to convert one of the nobs to a boss, or even the painboy. The problem is that these kits are made for completely new hobbyists who just want to be able to glue their models together, hopefully with all the sprue bits cut off, and play some games.

I think technically the lowest point cost battleforged army would be something like Sergeant Telion and a squad of Scouts. That would also set you back a whopping $41. Not a lot of fun to play with, though.

If you wanted to run a mini league and could get a few people together who were all willing to commit around a hundred bucks that should be enough to pick up a starting army (either by splitting a Dark Imperium box, or picking one of the Start Collecting boxes) and leaving them with a few bucks left that they could spend on paint and glue. There is a "Citadel Essentials" pack for both Warhammer 40K ($35) and Age of Sigmar ($33) that will get you a handful of starter size paints, a brush, a set of spruecutters, and some plastic glue.

If you have an even number of people who all have small armies like this you could also do team games, a 2 on 2 game can be a lot of fun.

Did I just read this lore wise correctly? ON the verge of the Blood Angel's destruction, a Chaos God decided to get his shit together for one second and made the entire thing [Tyranid Hive Fleet] disappear deus ex machina style?

It was the same bloodthirster that they had been fighting over and over since the crusades who had some kind of violence-based mega crush on the blood angels. When all the big reality storm stuff was happening he ate all the tyranids in orbit as a big taunt to his best bloody buddies and so his worthy foes wouldn’t have an ignoble end eaten by bugs.

Not super deep lore or anything but perfectly reasonable.
