Archery is a fun hobby. It's also really, really old!
If you are interested in archery, you would be best served by looking up a local archery shop or club on Google. If you don't have any experience at all, it can be very overwhelming figuring out what sort of bow and kit is best for you.
You're most likely not ambidextrous, so you'll need to figure out that, and figure out which of your eyes is dominant. Most types of archery benefit from keeping both eyes open, but dominance still matters.
If you talk to people and figure that stuff out, your local archery shop should be able to hook you up with a good starter set. You can also check out the major sporting goods stores, like Cabela's.
Or, you can find an online retailer. I use 3Rivers.

A good starter kit should be under $300

That has everything you need to start, except a target.
If you know someone, you can probably find one for considerably less.

Why do you think this, bub?
HE SPLIT ROBIN'S ARROW IN TWAIN!
I lack any real consistency with my shot placement
Though I suppose that could just be because I haven't been doing it long, or practicing consistently
I'd like to at least try a left handed bow and compare
because it's badass?
It could be your release. Do you use your fingers + glove or tab, or a mechanical? Most of my problems are from either not hitting my anchor point, or not releasing clearly
I think you've been doing this for some time, so I don't mean to be a know it all, I'm certainly not, I'm just brainstorming a bit
I picked it up a few years ago but haven't been diligent about practicing, and haven't picked it up at all since I moved, so I'll never be sore about anyone giving me advice
Guys, dodgebow is badass.

Coran Attack!
I'm weirdly invested in the traditional aspect of archery for some reason. It's a good way to sort of meditate, I guess, is the best way to put it.
I shot a compound bow when I was teenager, and was fairly competent with it. I could probably go back to being fairly competent with it in far less time than it will take me to get to the point where I don't embarrass myself with my recurve, but I don't want to do that.
I'm not trash talking compound, they're amazing pieces of technology and they're not easy, they're just a whole different thing.
Because they don't have an arrow in the bullseye any more and you still do. It's like curling.
Would someone else who has a bow join in?
I don't want this to be a weird thread with one weird dude treating it like his Instagram
I'm very self conscious
That's my way of saying that I would like to see your bow (and your range, and your target shooting results, and maybe even videos showing mechanics of shooting) @DouglasDanger
Make with the showy-showy!
show us your stiff wooden shaft
....
who is kate?
I love a good high, hard shaft
Hawkeye
edit: oh did comics randomly change again?
Kate Bishop has been Clint Barton's protege for some years now, first as a member of the Young Avengers
Lately she has struck out on her own
gotcha
I was always fond of Green Arrow myself despite of or perhaps because of all of his personality flaws
Mrs Rhesus and I keep talking about joining a club, and now my hours at work are calming down that could be a thing we look at.

My bow is a PSE Blackhawk, 60" tall 45 pound draw weight.
I'm not quite good enough at 10 meters, and plain old pathetic at 25
Gorgeous bow, but I'm out of shape and out of practice so the 60 lb draw weight is a bit much. Whoops
Really need to get back to it
I would love to get a heavier (draw weight) bow in a few years. I really, really want a Bear.
One time I went to a range for muzzle loading guns.
My brother in law loaded it with a full hunting load of powder one of those times though and acted all surprised when it barely made me flinch.
How do you sight a bow?
This is also known as Archery Tag and there's a league in town at the Archery Tag Arena and I kinda wanna sign up for it but what if everyone is good at it and I am comparably mediocre and ughhhhhh

You can have sights or you can shoot without. Shooting without sights is often called bare bow. I do that. It's tricky.
Um, do be safe
Have plenty of space behind your target unless you have a serious pile of dirt or a hillside or something
This morning, I was seeing what I could do at 25, and the first shot was high. My arrow just grazed the top of the target bag. It ricocheted, went probably 10 meters, hit a stone and ricocheted again, probably went 10 more.
A clean miss at a non-ridiculous how far can I shoot? type angle at full draw could probably go 100 meters?
Olympic recurve match targets are at 70!

Also anyone interested in the hobby, make sure your local laws permit shooting within the city limits, most places don't allow it. Also hay bales make for poor backstops for high speed bows. The arrows can travel right through them.

I also looked at a Bear Montana longbow at Cabela's yesterday, and probably would have bought it if I could have found a salesperson.
I'll have to settle for watching this dude make a longbow...

My dad bought me a book about making your own self bow. A self bow is a bow made from one piece of wood. It looks very fun, I wish I had a woodshop.

He said something about going to let me try it out sometime.
Apparently his has a really hefty pull weight though.
Being able to draw the bow and let it down smoothly would not be something I would want to learn with a high draw weight.
For compound the first time out for an average uninjured man i would recommend 50/60 lb bow to learn the basics safely.
There is a fair amount to learn to draw a bow back correctly, and let it back down without firing. A person doesn't want to figure that out while shaking and struggling with the equipment.
