we went to a screening and there was a bunch of teenagers who kept talking and screaming during the whole thing

    first scene:
one of them said "fucking faggots" when the two guys kissed on screen and a bunch of them laughed during the assault

we made it about an hour and a half in before leaving and asking for a refund. I think Paul Bunion was the last thing I saw. I can't tell if I wasn't really enjoying the film or if the teenagers ruined it for me, but I've got absolutely no desire to power through and see the ending unfortunately

Yeah, after that first comment I'd be going to the manager and having those kids tossed.

I had some kids talking in my theater. I have gotten to the point where I loudly ask if they're going to talk through the entire movie, which usually shuts them up.

If it doesn't, I go get an usher.

Fuck if I'm gonna let some teens ruin my movie-going experience and/or control what I do.

I understand I'm a little more confrontational tho, than most, and it has led to escalations before, but if they're going to be selfish enough to ruin my/other's time, I'm going to ruin theirs.

Hopefully I'm not coming across as Internet Tough Guy, this just happens to be one of my biggest pet peeves in life.

Edit: BTW, I enjoyed the movie, but agree with most of the criticisms. I noticed Eddie's "de-aging" the most because they altered the pitch of his voice in a few scenes. The pharmacy basement being the worst because he wasn't talking as fast as he usually does which made it more pronounced.

Also, I think this was the best ending we could have hoped for vs the Ray Harryhausen monstrosity.

Not at all. I've been known to do the same thing.
If people are going to break the social contract of "not talking in the theatre" I'm going to break the social contract of "leave people the fuck alone."

I would definitely have gotten a manager and if the experience was ruined, gotten some replacement tickets from them.

Someone at my second showing kept pulling their phone out in front of me. I almost leaned over their seat to read their texts since they apparently really wanted everybody looking at their phone.

I mean, I'm not adverse to telling people to shut the fuck up but it felt like it would have been playing right into their hands and giving them the attention they wanted. We told the users and security but realistically they are not being paid enough and causing a loud scene would have ruined things even further from what I can tell.

I feel kids being obnoxious throughout the whole film is more of a scene than a brief, loud one.

That’s like... the one job theater security really has. Kicking obnoxious people out so they don’t ruin the show everybody paid for. They aren’t equipped to deal with anything more serious than that but if they can’t remove some homophobic teenage oxygen thieves then theaters just shouldn’t bother with them.

This is why I only go to the Alamo Drafthouse now for movies, despite it being about an hour drive from my house. Some people tried to talk during IT 2 the other night. They were very rapidly shut the fuck up by staff.

As much as I enjoy the Alamo, a 2 hour round trip is too much. (except for special occasions)

    The bleachers scene
was not as bad as people are saying because it wasn’t exactly like Georgie. Pennywise lures Georgie in with promises of fun and popcorn and balloons. The little girl isn’t fucking fooled and starts to walk away before Pennywise lures her in with fucking empathy.

It fleshes the monster out into a more pure evil that isn’t above understanding human nature to better prey upon them.

I don't disagree with this at all, and I loved the scene. It's awesome and works really well, but when you start looking at the run time... I'm wondering if it needed to be there or if it should have been one of the first things cut.

Oh, I just remembered something else.

    Opening spoiler/question:
I think in one of the first scenes with Pennywise, I noticed a fly shadow/vignette on the top right of the frame when he showed up to eat the guy who gets tossed in the river. Did anyone else see that or was that a real fly on my crappy small-town theater projector? I thought it was a cool effect but I honestly couldn't tell if it was supposed to be there or not and I never noticed it again.

I get the sense that Jessica Chastain based her performance on Annette O'toole. She's playing miniseries Beverly, which is not the Beverly we saw in Chapter 1. I find her and Ben to be the most disappointing. Ben's best quality is looking like he might be related to Dr. Strange. It's a flaccid romance, I'd prefer John Ritter weirdly stroking O'toole over this passionless display.

    Good:
    • I really think Eddie's actor was good, but I kept thinking he looked like the poor man's Jake Gyllenhaal, and now I wish he had the role.
Yeah my thought throughout the film was that he looked like poor man's Jake Gyllenhaal.

However I think the actor still nailed the role and helped make Eddie my favorite character in the film.

Eddie was just so great to watch and pisses me off that he got killed instead either Ben, Bev, or Mike.

Give me a Eddie, Richie and Billy spin off series.

Am I the only one who feels kinda sorry for ol' Pennywise there? He looks like he's about to break into tears.

Saw this last night. Overall, I really liked some parts but it's not nearly as a good as Chapter 1.
The restaurant is the best scene in the movie. It's the only time the characters get to be themselves without exposition or jump scares getting in the way. Chapter 1 was better at walking the line between pacing the scares and exploring the characters. After the first act, it's like they're doing the Greatest Hits from when they were 12 or screaming.

Except for the apartment, the token hunt scares clanged for me. They all follow the same pattern, and after awhile it felt pretty paint by numbers. I did like the last round of scares in the cave, since it played more to who they were rather than what happened to them.

My biggest problem with the movie is Mike. He's a complete Magical Negro that plays to King's worst tendencies. I think he has one, maybe two, lines in the movie that aren't exposition or reacting to danger. The fact that every other character is so well-drawn just makes the failure more glaring—and suspicious. Everyone else is the focus of at least two scare scenes; Mike gets attacked by a falling book and the plot's insult to the mentally ill. Everyone else is shown to have full lives with their own lives/goals/problems separate from the thrice-century child feast; Mike got to hang out with "Native Americans" who only exist to help him help the white people solve their problems. How does someone write that with a straight face in 2019?

I honestly kept expecting Mike to transform into Pennywise at the end of the film, and that he lured them all home just to kill try to them

I thoroughly enjoyed Chapter 2, but didn't think it was particularly spooky at all, and it was way more effective with the comedy than the horror, not a great balance. The jumpscares were very telegraphed, became quite rote and I would've appreciated half of them getting chucked in the trashcan in favor of more character stuff.
favorite part was probably Ritchie getting deadlight'd? That was real surprising, the closest to peril they all seemed to get. Plus the effect just looks real cool.

Didn't really get that scene with the kid getting munched at the baseball game. She wasn't afraid, so apart from her not being tasty, shouldn't Pennywise have been unable to harm her per the rules established later? And it didn't affect anything else in the story, since it didn't connect to the Losers in any way.

    Oh brilliant

I feel the biggest problem this movie has is that it's a sequel when they weren't sure it was going to be a sequel.
It feels like the movie repeats a lot of storybeats by having them need to remember Pennywise. In the book this is interwoven with all the chapter 1 stuff which they couldn't rehash, so they created all this extra filler.

I hope the directors cut combines the two movies into a story that flows better.
