TO ALL NEW READERS, PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES AS PER MOD DECISIONS, AS LISTED BELOW. THIS IS A SENSITIVE SUBJECT THAT CAN EASILY TANGENT AND WE ARE LOOKING TO AVOID THAT. THANKS FOR TAKING A FEW SECONDS TO READ THIS.

MODERATOR-SET RULES FOR DISCUSSION:

Absolutely no posting of reddit theories or social media posts doing Internet sleuthing etc.

**New: No speculation about whether the shooter is/was/could be an ISIS agent until solid proof is presented.

No more second civil war discussion

3D printers may one day be able to print usable gun parts, but today is not that day and this thread is not that thread.

If you post new information, indicate the reliable news source you got it from. Identify all tweet authors. And we've all seen the Onion article already. We know.

Keep discussion focused on discussing the incident.

Guns vs bombs is not a particularly relevant or helpful discussion.

This thread needs to avoid a wide ranging discussion of gun control laws (regardless of nation) and stick to discussing the incident itself. There is an American gun control thread here if that discussion more fits what you'd like to post.

A gunman firing from a Las Vegas hotel rained a rapid-fire barrage on a huge outdoor concert festival on Sunday night, sending thousands of people fleeing until SWAT units found and killed him. More than 50 victims died, and at least 200 others were wounded, officials said, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.

Online video of the attack outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino showed the country singer Jason Aldean performing outside at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire. The music stopped, and concertgoers ducked for cover. “Get down,” one shouted. “Stay down,” screamed another.

    ...

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of Clark County told reporters early Monday morning that more than 50 people were killed and more than 200 injured. He identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, 64. He said the police were seeking “a companion” named Marilou Danley, a woman he described as Asian and 4-foot-11.

When I lived in Utah we used to go down to Vegas quite often, sometimes just for a long weekend or something just to get away from it all. The place kind of felt like a home away from home, so for me this feels closer than most horrific events like this do.

    This is just horrific.

If only there had been some kind of good guy with a gun, but sadly, the US' restrictive gun control laws cause tragedy once again.

Yes, it's tragic, but also... it's yet another mass shooting in the US and your politicians have long ago decided not to do anything to prevent the next one, so...

    Man, I dunno.

Twitter has been an utter quagmire. More than usual I mean.

Some guy from Arkansas with the same second name as Marilou Danley, who is wanted for questioning, was "outed" as the shooter. This "profile" of him was circulating, saying he was a member of all these left wing Facebook groups and that he was a campaigner for LGBTQ rights. Some people are STILL sticking to it, swearing that he's her ex husband and he was in on it.

Whoever the guy is, he was trending for hours.

Anyway, I recommend we don't mention his name here because if I were him I'd be onto a lawyer yesterday.

    yeah, you are right.

MSNBC ran a photo an hour ago of someone who is most definitely not a guy that matches the description given by the police now.

Fucking news is hard in the heat of the moment.

Definitely do not link social media accounts of suspects/persons of interest.

The daily mirror put up a picture of a generic looking white guy purported to be him, that is the only picture I have seen, definitely does not look hispanic or asian.

The lady that was seen with him that night was SEA so that may be the source of confusion.

I try my best to only link properly soirced material, or direct tweets from law enforcement... and even then there will be misinformation in the early hours of something this massive.

It's the kind of phrasing that you use on a sad card being passed around the office for somebody that you didn't know very well.

It's not exactly appropriate in response to the worst shooting in America's history.

It is utterly empty and pathetic. We know what he looks like when he's impacted by something. Or passionate about something. We see it when he's scolding NFL players, or defending racists. So this isn't it. I have no problem believing he doesn't really give a shit

I really, really hate how every political figure in American life is now schooled on how to show sympathy without committing to actually doing anything after one of these.

They've got canned responses, like they're responding to the results of a football game in their district or something.

I'm tempted to write a Twitter bot that auto-replies to canned sympathy comments with the number of times they introduce gun control laws, and voted for/against such legislation.

I've long since lost patience with this infantile coping mechanism, these idiots can rot in hell if they believe it didn't happen

This happened out in the open in a public place with thousands of witnesses, so at the very least I'm hoping there's will be less "this was staged crisis actors" bullshit. Am I crazy in believing even conspiracy theorists have a limit? Like the best conspiracy you could come up with is that the guy was like a government agent or patsy to stop gun sales or whatever, or am I being too sensible about it?

I feel totally desensitized to this.

My first reaction to this news was to be snarky and sarcastic. Maybe it's because I just can't fully comprehend it? I don't know. I walked into the break room at work this morning and everybody was watching video footage like it was reality tv. It didn't phase them.

How did we let ourselves come to this? How is this normal? God, we are so sick.
