Early in the 21st Century, THE TYRELL CORPORATION advanced robot evolution into the NEXUS phase - a being virtually identical to a human - known as a Replicant. The NEXUS 6 Replicants were superior in strength and agility, and at least equal in intelligence, to the genetic engineers who created them. Replicants were used Off-World as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets. After a bloody mutiny by a NEXUS 6 combat team in an Off-World colony, Replicants were declared illegal on earth - under penalty of death. Special police squads - BLADE RUNNER UNITS - had orders to shoot to kill, upon detection, any trespassing Replicant.
This was not called execution. It was called retirement.
That is a good question, and one I'm still wrestling with. Typically movie-specific threads here are indeed open spoilers, but I'm wondering in this particular case if it might be worth delaying for, say, a week.
Thoughts, everyone?
EDIT: That's what I'm doing. Everyone, PLEASE TAG YOUR SPOILERS for the first week. Longer post about this further down. Thanks!
Okay quick question should I go back and watch the original even though I really don't care for it or should I just read the wiki again for a refresher.

I would recommend watching it again, just to catch the subtle hints in the new one.
This references the first a lot more than I was expecting. I would recommend seeing it before hand if able.
Noted. Refresher viewing before I go and see it confirmed. (Which is still a few days away, which is contributing to my ambivalence on the spoilers issue.)
This is the one film I'm super excited for. New Star Trek was better than most of the old ST films, new Star Wars has been cool so far, but new Blade Runner...this is the one that tops them all. I just hope they don't turn it into a franchise.
Anyway, I'm going full blackout after this post. The reviews I've read have been excellent but also said that you really really don't want to spoil this one.
Right, I'm going to go with my gut here as regards spoilers, and assuming the mods are also okay with it.
Please TAG YOUR SPOILERS, at this point I'm going to say for the first week. I get the feeling there will be plenty to discuss about this movie outside of spoilers.
I may be wrong, in which case I might revisit this. But for now, please tag everything even slightly spoilerrific. If something is a tiny spoiler, or something outside of the usual realm, please note as such with your spoiler.
After that it'll be open season.
I know this is unusual for a dedicated movie thread. I hope everyone's okay with this. Thank you.

I know a few reviews have said this, but it definitely feels like how Fury Road was compared to Road Warrior. A really good modern sequel that by all expectations you would assume to be a cheap cash in.

With Denis Villeneuve at the helm I never expected a cheap cash in.

I say with no exaggeration that this movie is great, but the cinematography and sets are fucking astoundingly good.

And man, that audience was dead silent, even when standing up to leave.
They pretty much nailed it. It has one of those endings where it feels like they cut things a little too short at first (what about this and this, and that), but the more you sit with it the better stopping point it feels like.
This is such a good sequel. Also a great movie of course, but what struck me most was how it handled being a sequel. Explores the world anew with mostly new characters while not retreading the first movie, but exploring similar themes.
If you liked the first, yes. It's got a lot of quiet, introspective moments and some really, really beautiful moments. I've never seen a sex scene done so classy and artfully.
If you didn't, probably not.
I would do a review proper, but I think I need to see it again and I don't want to spoil a single thing accidentally. This damn movie plods a bit for the first act, and then there's this event that happens and then it's full speed ahead.

Ok so why does this one particular replicant have her memories?
Other than that it was a great film.
I think it's because she was born and not just "created."

Will be seeing it Sunday morning, and plan on doing a rewatch of the Final Cut tomorrow night in prep.
I wish I could find a locally available copy of the 4K Blu-Ray of the Final Cut released in the wild earlier this year, I'll just have to make due with 1080p and DTS 7.1 for now.

From the scene after the casino in the sewers, I got the impression that every replicant had some of her memories. There was a line, "We all thought we were/we all hoped we were the one" or something along those lines. Maybe I misheard/interpreted, however.
e: Like, she would recreate one of her memories and bundle it with the fake memories in the packages she sold to Wallace.

But he's selling apparently new obedient Replicants, and the old ones are on the run. She wasn't creating memories until at least 2029, and the woman who says that was there at her birth. Eh I dunno, maybe it's just fluke, I expected there to be twins honestly given the identical male and female kids on record.

What I like about that is that it deconstructs the typical "Chosen One" plot. No K, you aren't special, it's not your "fate" to lead the replicant uprising, but that means you can make your own choice and decide what cause is important to you personally.
Blade Runner is my favorite movie, so this definitely had a lot to live up. I watched a double feature - the theater showed the original Blade Runner (Final Cut) first, then this movie. I loved this movie, and upon further reflection I realized I was focusing too much on comparing it to the first movie, which doesn't do any favors, so I reappraised it in my head by thinking of it as its own film and it grew in my estimation. So what I'm saying is, now I really love this movie. We don't get enough blockbusters that are this slow and ponderous.

It takes a bit getting used to the pace of the movie. It's not very "modern" in that regard. Like a standard blockbuster editing would maybe cut the runtime by an hour. The only reason that was detrimental though, was because the cinema we were at has the most uncomfortable seats which was really exacerbated by the runtime.

I was positively surprised when they said he was not it, and immidiately thought of the designer due to what he said in response.
The guy i watched the movie with did not however, it's pretty subtle if you arent paying attention.
I think a fair number of people will hate it. I saw two groups walk out and not come back in the first hour, and heard a few disgusted THAT WAS SHIT comments from a few people at the end, but honestly those people looked like morons and dog-beaters, so I am happy drawing a line between those who love and hate the movie and retiring the half that hated it.

Not quite as open-mouthed in shock as the moment when Rachel walked out of the shadows, though. That sent a genuine chill up my spine.
