    Better Devils - can this be a reward from Gunsmith rank-ups, or am I fucked do I need to play Crucible to get it?

    I know this is an anecdote and RNG is gonna RNG, but I burned ~800 gunsmith mats this weekend (32-ish packages?) and never saw Better Devils despite seeing a couple of other guns repeat, so I don't think Gunsmith is a viable source.

    I saw a couple responses about Leviathan key chests, but that's also all RNG. Since I've been doing the raid weekly and still don't have it, I'm just going to write that off as a passive chance from a much larger pool.

    That leaves me with Crucible. Yuck. I did CtA on Hunter and Warlock this weekend with no luck. I also realized that Shaxx tokens would require 10 wins or 20 losses, which to me seem like a lot of time invested for a single vendor rank-up.

    It's slightly better if you do the daily challenges and better still on the days when doing the three challenges nets you a rep bundle. My Better Devils dropped as a post-match reward, so that's also a possibility. I still feel like Crucible rewards are a little skimpy overall but that could be a function of my having most of what I want in the game as a whole.

    Got the worst side of PvP last night, my teams were baaaaaad and I got rolled and rolled and more and more tilted and I kept playing because I just wanted one good match to end on, it was pretty stupid. If it isn't happening then it isn't happening, I've got to remember that.

    Edit: Ok I just looked and according to Destiny Tracker the other team had an 80% or greater chance of winning in three of those matches and a 70% or greater chance in two others. C'mon man. Just, c'mon.

    I agree. (I've been away for a few days but am back now.) Destinytracker used to give us Last Played data (i.e. "Four hours ago"; "Two days ago"; "Eleven months ago") - without that, it's hard to really know who has stopped playing vs. who plays at odd hours or plays intermittently but consistently.

    But we can see what level your highest character is, and we have five people who have been 267 and below for weeks, so I have the feeling that those people stopped when they hit the endgame. Bro, trust me on this. Better Devils doesn't drop from most sources. It comes from end of game rewards in crucible, or crucible turn ins. It does have a chance to drop from special chests that don't conform to standard loot tables, like Cayde or Raid chests, or also from clan crucible engrams, which function the same as a shaxx turn in. It doesn't drop from strikes/gunsmith/planets etc. Just like Antiope-D is exclusive to Gunsmith. @Erevar

    Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.

    It was very tiresome, but it took less than an hour to do, so not that bad really. There were guardians waiting for space to open up in the clan, though, so I owed them that effort.

    If you could make a tool that did this automatically, it would be awesome and save all the clan admins a ton of time.

    That would be nice. If I was in the gaming business, I'd honestly try and poach the live team members right now. In my tech experience, the main team always gets the higher pay/glory, and the post-launch support team gets less of both. There's some prime talent there that is frankly being wasted by Bungie.

    Part of the issue at the moment is probably also that the PC release is in a day so they've likely been going HAM on that and not been able to give the console versions the TLC they need right now.

    I was browsing the PC info, and there are still a *ton* of issues bungie's been disclosing publicly with the PC release. This tells me it's gonna be buggy and they're trying to temper expectations, and that they've likely been swamped trying to fix everything before release.

    What kind of keyboard button mapping are people going to use for the PC release?

    From playing the beta I remember the mouse being excellent and the keyboard being a huge pain in the ass

    I didn't mess around with custom button mapping - I'm interested to know what people think is an ideal setup
    I'm making bets with myself on how many "use a gamepad/controller" responses I get.

    I have only one thing to say about that: Shaxx me outside, HABADAT

    So PC PLAYERS:
    If you want into the clan please follow the OP instructions and PM me with your username on battlenet. Go ahead and apply to the clan the same time you do this, makes it quicker for me to check both places and just hit approve rather than replying to messages giving you the go ahead to apply. If people apply who do not do this, I will deny the app until you do it that way. I was much more lenient up till now but I've started getting requests that seem clearly not PA folk so we're locking it down.

    Also there's a Discord! I plan to hang out there for a lot of tomorrow to grab groups and I can make more channels as necessary and all that so feel free to hop in there if you're looking for friends. I'll be trying to approve people for the clan quickly assuming they sent me the right PM!

    Yeah, good points Shryke. It definitely is that the game seems to actually not have incentives to play....but I also find it pretty damning that people don't even want to do the prestige raid once....because the way they have it set up, it's just not fun (your mileage may vary / opinions etc).

    That last one I find scary, actually, because better incentives to play something I don't enjoy.....ugh, that'd be bad. But as Squall also said, even higher light means nothing, so maybe even then I wouldn't care.

    With the prestige raid the thing is, people will do a lot of things even if they aren't having the most fun if you give them a reason to. I think the opinions I keep getting from console Destiny people I know kinda speaks to how little they are willing to put up with because there's not really much reason or reward for it.

    Not that I'm suggesting it's ok that people think it's not fun, just that it's telling imo that so few of the people I know are willing to deal with it anyway.

    jefe414 wrote: »
    I don't like the prestige raid because it doesn't conform to how everything in D2 is set by power level. If you're at the minimum activity level, the damage out/in is pretty much consistent across the board. In the prestige raid red bar enemies simply have 3x more health and do double or triple damage. Elsewhere in the game, if you're under powered, the enemies have a red skull next to their health to indicate this. In the prestige raid, nope, they simply have way more health and do way more damage.

    Lazy.

    I do like the mechanic changes though but I have no interest to do it again in the future.

    I feel this speaks to the issues they have with the design of their power level progression system and how you move up it. Because people go in essentially already maxed out, there's no tangible sense of progress or reward for banging your head against that wall. And that's really key to how these kind of activities work. They are hard when you start but you try hard, you scrape some small victories together, you get stronger, you win more and slowly you progress to dominating the thing.

    The normal mode raid kinda has this, or at least potentially does for players playing a certain way, in that the front half and the back half are different light levels so you can get some wins on the initial parts, get swole with power over time and ramp up to be stronger so you can take on the back half.

    But you can rank up your power level basically just farting around the game, which is nice in one sense but also robs the prestige raid of the ability to create a tangible sense of progression for doing it.

    One thing D2 has in common with EverQuest for me: screwing around a social space doing nothing of importance while I chat with clan members about absolutely nothing important while we debate what activity we won't wind up doing because of lack of interest from others.

    To be fair, this is a very recent development (like, last night).

    After playing so much D1 on console, the jumping/movement (which is a huge part of Destiny) feels much better to me on a gamepad than on a keyboard.

    I was also never a huge FPS-on-PC dude, so I never really developed the habit of aiming with a mouse. I'm about as accurate with a gamepad as I am with a mouse, and yes, I know how bad that means my mouse accuracy is.

    controller "feels" better but actually isn't better in terms of how effective you can be.

    Its the mouse. The mouse is a billion times more effective than the controller sticks can ever be. The problem is the keyboard. I'm going to look into getting one of those stripped down "gaming keyboard / gamepad" thingies within a couple of weeks, assuming they aren't a total ripoff and are actually good

    Also something I noticed when playing the beta - I actually missed not having the rumble feedback from the controller.

    Its not something I consciously notice when I am playing on PS4 but I actually act on that rumble feedback a lot. An extra stimulus to tell me to move the fuck out of that damage AoE, or whatever.

    Still not enough to make me go controller on PC, but something I will miss for sure.

    None of the Crucible guns drop outside of the parameters I stated. I think people confuse the fact that you can get Crucible items from clan engrams or Cayde chests with those guns actually being in the standard loot pool. I will also bet that your 800 mats never got you a Martyr's Make, Does Not Compute, or a Retrofuturist from Banshee.

And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.

    I'm going to formally request that "gamepad vs. WASD on PC" not be A Thing in this thread because I'm already tired of the discussion.

    does the PC version have gamepad support?

    Yes. Full gamepad support afaik, which was an issue in PC MP because of the aim-assist and people tricking the game into thinking they were using a controller while using a mouse.

    Destiny feels a lot more like a Diablo 3 style game than an MMO to me. But it's definitely got elements of both, I just think it leans more towards the D3 style of gameplay with MMO style loot.

    I've recently played Diablo 3, and the loot system feels a lot more fleshed out to me in Diablo than Destiny 2. Destiny 1 was closer, which was good, but in D2 drops aren't nearly as rewarding.

    I'd liken the feeling to getting a ghost from the Nightfall in D1, except now that feeling exists for every item, and a Ghost may actually be an improvement because it can roll planet based perks.

    Sure does! Or at least, the Beta did. I'd be pretty surprised if they removed that for release.

    yeah I agree with this. I'm not really looking to have a debate about it. I'm interested in button remapping on keyboard, though; and I bet you many others are as well.

    Yeah totes! I just can already see the Hot Takes about gamepad vs. mouse precision and I'd rather we try to keep the thread a friendly place.

    well in that case i too share the trepidation at the thought of the discussion. i don't expect the thread will get bogged down by it* but it does seem like it'll be an issue that will come up. if only for the impact it might have on the games longevity on PC.

    *not when we have important kitbash discussions to have. :P

    i would not be opposed to trying a controller on PC just so I don't have to learn new muscle memory since i don't tend to play FPSes at all in the first place

    and since i don't really care if i do well in pvp

    using E and Q for ability buttons was fine and at the time of the beta i didn't even know what the third ability was, so i wasn't worried about remapping it but

    mapping dodge/rift/barrier to a button will probably be the only change i'd make if i played KBAM

    maybe to F? i dunno

    i don't really remember what the mapping felt like at this point, though i do remember it wasn't the greatest

    F seems like a potentially good melee key. It's usually F or V in FPSes on PC I think?

    i would actually suggest that based on my perception of the online clan members i see whenever i log in, someone could probably do a little cleaning of the main clan.

Unless you are one such person and object, I think I will bounce them this week and make room for five people on the wait list. Everyone else is 282-305.

    29 people at 305;
    16 people at 304;
    07 people at 303;
    06 people at 302;
    06 people at 301;
    02 people at 300.
    Interesting how that shakes out.

    You can use Destinytracker and check the date of their last activity. I sorted the clan by power level and started at the bottom, clicking on names, then scrolling down to see how long ago their last activity was. Anyone who hadn't done something in over a month got kicked.

    That sounds... tiresome.

    I've mucked around with the Destiny 1 API before, I'll have a look and see what I can do with the D2 one to make it easier for you guys.

    It was very tiresome, but it took less than an hour to do, so not that bad really. There were guardians waiting for space to open up in the clan, though, so I owed them that effort.

    If you could make a tool that did this automatically, it would be awesome and save all the clan admins a ton of time.

    Looks relatively simple from the experiments I've done.

    Should be done by the end of the week (probably sooner, but I'm not falling into the trap door of giving myself a unnecessarily tight deadline)

    Why would anyone not use a mouse for an FPS?

    This will be my first MMO since I stopped playing Wow ~7 years ago. I hope I enjoy it half as much.

    People who use mice are the same people who use bumpers when they bowl, training wheels when they cycle, and selfi-sticks when they take pictures.

    Yes, you are probably better at bowling, cycling, and taking selfies, but it's due to your technology, which is just a crutch that masks any true skill.

    "Master" race indeed.

    i play FPSes with my feet because using hands is just a handicap

    also then i can eat combos at the same time

    i've heard they were tuning it completely differently from consoles but i haven't really been following closely
