I don't think so, but that's more to do with how Minecraft works itself rather than it being a good or bad idea.

I could see a conceptually similar game coming about, but not a outright sequel. In many respect those already exist, with games like Astroneer, or things like Project Spark (which unfortunately went the same way as Little Big Planet--big idea, swept the world, then died).
    Sirialis wrote: »
Its just troubling that they are saying this now, even if they focus on first party right now, that should still mean actual games in 3-5 years?

I honestly thought they had done so already.

Because they have talked about it (whether or not anyone listened), but the issue was they didn't have enough to show for it. This is almost exactly how we got Gears of War 4--but that's just one game. Halo Was 2, Forza etc., but that's not necessarily enough.

In fact, with something like Halo Wars 2, you're seeing the immediate result. A console RTS did not come out of no where, that was a deliberate effort on Microsoft's part (and now they literally have the only moderately successful game in that genre).

But one (or two or three) games isn't enough. In a way, there's never enough--but you want to be more like the PS4 (and not the PS3). And then there's third party development...

In addition to the "How do you follow the biggest game in history" question there's the problem of "Why bother making a new one when you're still in the top ten every month."

Like, some day there will be a Grand Theft Auto 6. Probably. But GTA V is still selling better than most new games and it's 4 years old.

It's also a game people buy multiple times. I have Pocket Minecraft and I don't even play it, but it was on sale and why not?

It's the World of Warcraft dilemma. If anything, in Microsoft's case the motivations are even stronger against: Minecraft wasn't a series, but a single concept stretched across platforms. Even if it wasn't what it was, why do a sequel? Why not focus on something entirely different, like a landscape/geological/planet creation game? Or a biological/hominid building game (your joke about Spore[ here). What about one where you have an existing world, but modify architectural and physical constructs in a way vastly more complex then Minecraft will ever be?

They sound a lot less risky than "Well, just make Minecraft, but better." And if they failed, they'd be less disastrous.

While, yes , you should always take marketing with a grain of salt, this is the first major statement from Microsoft in a long time that wasn't them blowing smoke about how their first party lineup is already good and etc. etc. Badically they'be soentbthe ladt year acting like they don't have a first party problem.

If their rhetoric is changing, hopefully that means they're actually going to be working on improving their first party efforts.

So you are saying a new Too Human or Eternal Darkness is possible? How about them Mech Assault? Be a shame to sit on these IPs you bought and do NOTHING with them.

Halo Wars 2 is almost a perfect example of game no one expected, a lot of people wanted (though not Portal 3 numbers of course), and made pretty much no financial sense to risk making on its own. It came out, and everyone agreed: hey, this is a pretty good game (and also the only one in its genre, which is a whole separate problem).

Microsoft puts money into that development--they just don't put enough potentially (or they don't produce enough results otherwise). There need to be more Halo Wars 2 and fewer Scalebounds (in other words, games that were axed because they were probably severely defective at that point).

I don't get that impression--that may've been part of it, but it looks a lot more like a case of "as bad as the other three high-profile games that Platinum put out this year" before Nier finally demonstrated they could make good games again, and that spooked Microsoft into cutting their losses.

I think Platinum was like "we can do that for a lot more money" and Microsoft walked because it probably wouldn't return the investment

  • tastydonutstastydonuts Registered User regular
There were a few issues in tis development, including the breaks that what's-his-face had to take for "mental health"? Platinum was working on multiple projects too.

That, combined with three expensive failures (one of them genuinely awful, the other two attached to high-profile franchises and not well received) in 2016 weren't encouraging. That's why I think Microsoft cut their losses rather than gamble on Platinum to eventually right the ship. Too bad, it looked mostly good--but so did Mass Effect Andromeda before it came out.

Not saying it was a bad or good call, but it did lend to the narrative that Xbox was struggling with first party and exclusive games

It absolutely did, because they were. Even if Scalebound came out, they would've been, the best game from Platinum wouldn't fix the overall issue.

Platinum's Mass Effect Andromeda with dragons, on the other hand, it seems pretty clear who'd get blamed for that in the public eye. And Andromeda was a better game at launch than Platinum's TMNT. Considering how desperate MS was for a game like that, it could've been really bad off...

oh, regarding upgrading tomorrow, does the X come with a transfer cable or is the best thing to do to use a thumbdrive? The games redownloading is fine, I'm thinking more for the saves.

IIRC, there's an application that will allow you to xfer data between xboxes over your lan.

I don't believe there's a transfer system like that (this isn't a 3DS). Your console settings can be backed up onto an external drive.

In terms of saves, unless you deliberately disabled it (or your console is offline), everything is synced through online storage ("The Cloud"). Xbox One has been doing this for launch, when you sign in onto the new console, upon running a game for the first time your games will be synced accordingly (they may also do this automatically under other circumstances). There's no need to manually transfer. Hope that helps.

It also does it via a removable drive or you can throw both on a network and they'll find each other and transfer that way too.

Hopefully more updates start getting announced soon

Now for some insider baseball, Titanfall 2's high-resolution patches are out...but apparently there are issues.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urYrx7zAvPM

Long story short, the PSFro is locked at 1440p, the XB1X is advertised as dynamic resolution that can go up to 150% 2160p potentially ("6K")--and it does occasionally go over 2160p, but also sometimes goes as low as ~1200p. Also the framerate is more prone to dips in the parts where resolution scales downwards (also apparently in cinematics the PSFro framerate drops down to 40 whereas XB1X stays consistent?). The DF guys think this is something of an unfinished patch which, considering the console launches tomorrow technically, is certainly possible.

I hope it gets fixed, but to be honest, Titanfall 2 is also one of the last games I was really thinking about playing again (I can't make myself finish the singleplayer, despite all the rave reviews it got).

  • localhjaylocalhjay Registered User regular
I'm thinking they phoned in the 1X patch or didn't test it much

  • ProhassProhass Registered User regular
Honestly I feel like this will be the case with a lot of the patches, which, like any update, might behave differently in the wild or still need tweaking. Some companies are better at it than others, and other times the fundamental structure of the game itself might not lend itself easily to updates and will require some tweaks. I feel like that's going to be the case with some games. Still dissapointing, but it sounds like overall it still looks better?

Anyway just went down to the shops and grabbed mine. No preorder. Also got wolfenstien for half price thrown in which is awesome

Well, didn't expect this: Microsoft to launch a game streaming service.

I mean, I wouldn't use it. But I think game streaming kind of sucks.

I wish Microsoft would just buy the Terraria devs and give them shitload of cash and time to build their dream game.

Terraria is just pure crack to me and Minecraft isnt for some reason... Maybe I should give Minecraft an honest go one of these days.

We all have those. I wish Microsoft would pick up what's left of Bioware and try something substantially different with Mass Effect--maybe drop the RPG leveling mechanics entirely and make it a skill-based third-person action-adventure game, maybe confined to a single exotic planet (with some fun gravity-bending environments). Or maybe put a suspense/horror twist on it Dead Space style. Or put its flight-sim know-how towards a hard-simulation TIE Fighter game (you know, as if that were even possible). But people would probably hate those ideas and they'd end up being a tremendous waste of money. Hence the importance of other developers with existing projects.

EDIT: Oh, or give Itagaki the money to make an actual Ninja Gaiden 3. One that doesn't suck, or come with Koei-Tecmo's general disdain for Xbox. That's a good one.
