I don't think you need super fancy beasts to make Kath playable. Hitting anything 4 mana and up is pretty good as long as it doesn't have most of its power in its battlecry
The problem is that Midrange hunter is currently forced into the route of having a lot of early beasts in order to Crackling Razormaw on 2 and Houndmaster on 4. The structure that Hunter decks have to have to survive in the early game is not conducive to running Kath in your deck.

Yeah, the problem is that in order to survive the early game you need some sort of minions on board as a Hunter, and most of the early minions that are any good are beasts.
it does seem a little strange to me how slow a lot of these weapons need you to play; I'm sure lots of them will wind up being good but even stuff like the priest weapon (class that already plays control) just so laborious to get value out of
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat

People keep asking for a slow meta, so Blizz is giving them one.

I'm kind of surprised people are excited about the druid card, none of the functions are cost efficient. You're paying in efficiency for versatility, and the game hasn't been kind to cards like that in the past.
Like the choose cards that do well are already well costed for either function (living roots, nourish, Malfurion). Cards that are just versatile but inefficient (Nerfed Keeper, Nerfed Ancient of Lore, Starfall) are fringe playable.
Getting +2 damage is probably the most exciting version, and that's basically a worse savage roar.
4 Mana to gain 12 armor is better than healing potion for your hero. It can't heal minions but you usually don't. If this isn't played it's only going to be because Jade and big druid already have so much anti aggro tools.
Yeah there's definitely merit to it being a good defensive tool to buy time against aggro, and a useful draw spell against control. But I feel the efficiency issues really hurt this card. That's not to say it's unplayable, by any stretch, but more that it will be metagame or build dependent in slower Druid decks that want flexibility over raw power.

Stop comparing it to Barnes y'all, they're nothing alike. Kathrena can just be a high end finisher for a control deck, 8 mana for a 6/6 and a 6/5 that both have relevant deathrattles is a fucking beating against any control deck (including Razakus and Twisting Nether Warlocks!)

Alternatively, run it with Barnes and it's like running 2 Barnes which can't pull each other.

1 mana 1/3 with +2 attack while you control a pirate
and the pirate tag
I.E. is it a way to insta-max the spellstone?
It should be. On the stream it applied the effects in between choosing.

My problem is I'm having a hard time thinking of good non-beasts for hunter.

This is probably way too focused on fitting into the current meta, but I gave it a shot:
2x Acherus Veteran
2x Argent Squire
2x Bloodsail Corsair
1x Patches the Pirate
1x Tracking
1x Prince Keleseth
1x Acolyte of Pain
2x Animal Companion
2x Deadly Shot
2x Eaglehorn Bow
2x Kill Command
2x Southsea Captain
2x Saronite Chain Gang
2x Cobalt Scalebane
1x Deathstalker Rexxar
2x Savannah Highman
1x Charged Devilsaur
1x Kathrena Winterwisp
1x King Krush
20 minions, 7 spellls, 2 weapons
Curve is 0, 8, 1, 11, 2, 2, 3, 3
Probably still not anywhere near as good as zoolock
Huh that might see play...
It's like a worse Fire Fly with the potential to be a better Fire Fly.

Big Priest only runs 5 threats and those quite often get drawn, making Barnes/Shadow Essence useless sometimes, right?
Also there's most assuredly going to be some nice Big Boy Beasts revealed, too. Preferably one with Taunt, or Lifesteal.
But I think definitely more than 5.

It’s feral and it gibbers. Sounds like a beast to me.
