Anyone try different battery packs with the switch? I'm seriously considering cheaping out with the non-quick charge version of the anker 20100, since it's like $20 cheaper. It should at least maintain the charge, if not actually charging it, right?

I've been super-lurking the Switch subreddit, and every time I see a topic about power banks come up, I keep seeing the same one heavily recommended: Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD

I've got it on my christmas wishlist.
Well yeah, but that's literally twice the price of the ones I was looking at (the 20100 for ~30 vs the 20100+ for ~50)
The 20100 will slow down the drain as you play it, but it'll still go down. the 26800 has lots going for it to battle the power drain on the switch ( USB c to c, the 5V/3A, etc.)
Based on my younger son's enthusiasm for Wind Waker on my old GameCube, I'm considering getting the family a Switch for Christmas. Reading a few pages, it seems like screen protector (tempered glass) and maybe a pro controller are good things to get with it. Anything else? I suspect it will be pretty stationary for it's first year or so.
Also, my wife would really want a dance game. Should I just get the latest Just Dance and be good to go? I was looking at them on Amazon and you use a phone as a controller? You get three months worth of music? What am I getting myself into there?

Yes, and I said as much in my first post. The question was if the 5V3A was worth almost double the price, not if a higher capacity one was worth triple it

Thank you, Switch Thread!
I wouldn't bother with a Pro controller until you've tried the joycons in their grip. Many people find them to be absolutely fine and pro controllers aren't of insignificant cost.
I've only 'played' the Just Dance demo, (in inverted commas as the movement sensing and scoring in Just Dance seems pretty arbitrary to me) but it seems to be a fairly standard Just Dance game. i.e. people seem to love them and I'm getting it for my daughters for Christmas. You can use your phone for a controller, but you can play two players with a single set of split joy-cons.

Well I didn't get that from the original post, but it's quite a difference between the life of the switch on the go. I think it's worth it
Octopath Traveler really needs the ability to skip cutscenes. I've died to Prim's boss fight half a dozen times now, and by far the worst part was button mashing through the cutscene every. Single. Time.
Why are people so hyped about Octopath? I like it just fine, but I don't understand the "ZOMG AMAZING!" reviews everywhere. The way I could see it being really cool is if you have to play the paths in parallel: for example, character A needs to do something to open up an option for character B, or characters C and D can team up, but they need to be in the same place first, etc. If the marketing talks about that kind of thing, I can't find it.

This is the type of thing that you should bring up in the player survey they sent out.

Probably because we haven't had a worthwhile SaGa game since...SaGa Fronteir?
It's 10 bucks and probably 10 minutes of your time. Sure, there's a chance you may never scratch your Switch screen the entire time you own it. And there's also a chance you will. You'll appreciate having an unscratched Switch screen 4 years from now more than you will having that extra $10 in your pocket.
There are no downsides to having one on there. It doesn't reduce the touch sensitivity in any noticeable way. It doesn't prevent it from fitting in docks or cases. It even feels better under your finger (assuming you get tempered glass).
I don't use screen protectors on any of my phones or other gadgets but the tempered glass ones are so slick that I can't imagine anyone NOT using one once you have tried it. I prefer the feel of the screen WITH the protector over a bare-assed Switch screen.

Yeah but if you fuck up installing it now you either have to live with the same issues as having a scratched screen (IE dirt or hair under the glass) or you have to risk pulling this incredibly adhesive glass thing off your beloved Switch. I've had to do this once and it was god damn nerve wracking to say the least.
You *can* get away without a screen protector on the switch, but one thing I continue to say is that a good tempered glass screen protector on the switch makes the screen feel approximately eleven billion times better to touch/use/interact with than the plastic that the screen actually is.
100% worth it just to make the screen feel like not garbage to interact with.

wait, you can actually die on that?
I had the boss whiff on what would have been a death blow 3 or 4 times and figured it was rigged so you couldn't lose
and people are hyped about the game because it has insanely gorgeous graphics

And what appears to be a nonlinear, or at least strongly character-dependent plot, in the way that Seiken Densetsu 3 had. It's a rarity among JRPGs.

Yes, a single spec of dust, that's the only scenario that could possibly occur.
Assuming Xenoblade reviews as well as the first 2 I'd point out that if portability isn't a factor Skyrim can be had for far cheaper and even if portability is a factor the switch version will probably eventually go on sale. The two Xenoblade games on the other hand never really dropped in price.
I hadn’t really played Skyrim since it first released when i first dumped a decent amount of time into it. I have put 23 hours into Skyrim in the past week. I didn’t even know I had 23 hours of game time to play this week, or have since my daughter was born in September. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for console quality games on a handheld.
I’m getting a lot more mileage out of Switch Skyrim than I got from the PC version way back, but it’s pretty much the Bethesda formula: shit-ton of content of wildly varying quality, janky engine that’s equal parts amusing and frustrating, solid gameplay without a whole lot of guidance. If you’ve played Oblivion or any of the new Fallouts you know what you’re looking at. The ability to play on a handheld has really brought me in more than I anticipated, however.
I lost 100 hours to the 3DS port of the original Xenoblade and enjoyed every minute, but the combat felt real singleplayer-MMORPG. I don’t mind that at all, and the world was far more interesting than Skyrim’s more traditional fantasy. If you don’t mind waiting there should be reviews out by the end of the week, but I’d expect that you’d get a solid, huge RPG no matter which way you go.
Edit: There’s also the general vibe to consider. Basic fantasy business with some wit from Skyrim, and if it’s in keeping with its predecessors, solid anime melodrama from Xenoblade. I’m down for both, but the latter is a little more rare in big open world RPGs, so it felt fresher at the time.

I can’t believe you dorks are making me consider buying Skyrim again.
I never played the first Xenoblade on the Wii. Then I never bought the 3DS re-release (which I kind of regret, because it's like 90 dollars now). I don't even know what Xenoblade X is or if it's a sequel, a remake, a port, or what.
Xenoblade 2 looks neat, but having never played any of the other games, it's a pretty easy pass for me at this point.
Plus, y'know, my back log is like this big /makes gesture, and anyway for once in my life I'm going to be a responsible consumer and not indulge in buying a game that I very realistically will never finish anyway.

Looks like I will need to get an HDMI switch as my soundbar is now full of Virgin Media TV box, XBOX, Raspberry Pi and Steam Link - anyone have a recommendation? Was thinking of this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kinivo-Premium-switch-wireless-remote/dp/B0049S6ZUS/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1511692027&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=kinivo+5+port to plug in Xbox, Switch and Steam Link.
Also, how much is a screen protector a necessity?
