I love this and need that piano. Every Halloween I make a different costume out of cardboard and duct tape, last year i did robocop, and I can't wait to decorate these and see what othe people come up with.
I hope the software is good tho, otherwise this could fall flat. (cardboard pun)
So, wait, the optimal way to play the robot game is with five joycons (one on each foot, one in each hand, and one on your head)?
Isn't that $160 on top of the $380 for the console and the game itself?
God help people if that thing has local multiplayer.
There's one joycon on the head and one on the back. The one on the back has the camera pointed at the string spools, and can see how much they are pulled out.

Been trying to think of the overlap in the Venn diagram between "cool stuff to do with Labo" and "stuff I'd actually want to play" and here's what I've got so far:
I showed the Labo trailer to my 5 year old and by the time the piano was assembled he was asking if we could get it this Saturday.
When he saw the April date at the end he was very disappointed and asked me how many sleeps it would be.

Also Pokemon Snap Labo, obviously. Hell, just Pokemon Snap - Switch Edition. Just Pokemon Snap in general. I'd play Pokemon Snap - Taint-Clamps Edition, just LET ME TAKE PRETTY PICTURES OF POKEMANS

As someone who does not own a switch yet, I'm leery of Nintendo selling products that require the joycons. It decreases the chances that Nintendo will ever sell a switch SKU with a pro controller instead of joycons, which would be my preference.
Otherwise, I find this to be a perfectly inoffensive product for other people.
I can understand preferring the pro controller for docked mode, but do you really plan to never ever play it in handheld mode? Or even just have the joy-cons handy for local multi?
I will say I cringed hard when watching them slide the Switch into cardboard stuff. So many scratches! So much potential for Switch faceplants, and drops out of poorly secured cardboard creations.
Just another reason it ain't for me.
/shudder
True Story. The day I got my Switch I took it out of the box, all excited. Taking care to carefully remove the items and get the thing setup. I plug the Switch in to charge and have it positioned on the table on top of the carrying case and go to do so 'research' on my computer. I turn to go and grab something from behind me and my arm knocks the plugged in Switch off the table, which promptly falls face first down onto the floor with a loud clatter. My mind goes haywire. Is the screen broken, did I just shatter some internals that would render my new baby inoperative, is my brand new console now my brand new dead console. I gingerly pick it up and ... it's totally fine. Not a scratch on the bad boy.
where a guy drops his switch from 1000 feet ... and it still works. Sooooo ... I don't think it falling out of a plastic cardboard shell is going to phase it. Of course if you are a super stickler about the apperance of your Switch then ... my sympathies?
On a Labo related note ... that shit looks awesome. I won't have time for it but if they ever come out with something interesting I'll be all over that. I guess I must still be a kid at heart.
Labo looks completely stupid to me. The last thing I want is a bunch of cardboard accessories - isn't all the plastic junk enough? I just want to play video games, not jump around like some kind of Awesom-o wannabe. I was done with that kind of shit halfway through Wii's life. Oh well, I don't foresee this encroaching on the kinds of games I'd rather be playing so have fun y'all.

To be fair, he is saying that it won't encroach on other Nintendo games. And I agree. I have little interest, but it's not like this is going to stop them making stuff I like.
This does have a lot of potential for education, though.
My 7 year old saw the trailer and says we HAVE TO GET IT!!! I explained that there are a limited amount of things one can get in a lifetime, and quite possibly this will not be on that list. I'll wait for reviews, and maybe a sale. Wonder if their cardboard is high-quality, and/or what sorts of spray options there are to increase cardboard lifespan and add waterproofing. Also, when not in use, can you disassemble and store pieces flat? That could be an important factor for someone in a small house like my family's got...

Yes on both counts. I am an extreme shut-in and introvert. I never buy handheld consoles or multiplayer games. I cannot justify the purchase when I spend almost all of my time in one room of my house, and always by myself. My smartphone is a gift from my family, who became frustrated with how difficult it was to contact me. The only other portable computing device I use is an old, obsolete laptop, exclusively for casually browsing the internet in bed, which I am doing right now.
My personality has made being a video game enthusiast somewhat difficult recently, as the industry is moving in a direction that largely excludes people like myself. But I adapt as best I can.

You're not the target demographic.
I am completely aware of this and I appreciate Nintendo prefaced the reveal with "for children and children of all ages". Let me know in advance it wasn't something for me to get excited about.

Ok if I'm reading this right Nintendo basically created a working mocap suit out of literal cardboard and string plus a tiny ir camera.
While I'm firmly outside the target demographic I'm still throughly impressed by the technicals of the thing.

To be fair, "jumping around" isn't the only thing this facilitates. Case in point, the piano example in the trailer. That piano is a proof of concept for larger physical consoles you could use as control schemes for various games. Control your starship with a full physical dashboard. Take pictures with a complex camera shell.
Basically, Nintendo has provided an avenue for solving control scheme limitations. Joycon doesn't have enough buttons for/doesn't handle comfortably for the game you're designing? Build a thing that does, and the joycon will read it for you!

I would be a little concerned about durability if you’re unfolding and refdong the cardboard every time. That would wear it out.

I mean like, use case for this that everybody can get something out of:
A joycon has 9 buttons + home button + analog stick. Build a shell with 15 inputs + access to the stick. Boom, no more fucking around with tiny, insufficently numerous buttons for <insert game with complicated control scheme here>.

I appreciate the recommendation, but I dislike gaming in bed. My arms fall asleep. Gaming also tends to emotionally excite me, which is usually the opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish while in bed.
If I did want to game in bed, I would not need to undock the console to do so, as I have a television set up at the foot of my bed.
