seeing three billlboards today
seeing justice league tomorrow
it is a good movie weekend
I am dying to hear about Three Billboards from anyone else, but especially from you
hello that movie is probably McDonagh's best work and it's an astonishingly complicated and nuanced piece
that movie made me actually rethink a few fairly ingrained emotional stances!
Just to go off on this more
You're talking about like with racist cops, right
I don't know how the fuck McDonagh and Sam Rockwell did it, but I was rooting for a dumbass unrepentant racist by the end of that movie
He's far and away done the worst things of anyone in the town (well, besides whoever actually killed the girl), but he's still the closest thing the movie has to a hero
Man justice league cost 300 million?! I liked the film but it did not look like 300 million. They really need to stop with the cgi, it looks so cheap for something so expensive.

definitely a big part of it, but more...
like, Mildred DOES deserve justice, and if you asked me at the start of the movie if she should go as far as she went to get it, or if her plans to eliminate the pool of awful people were basically right, I would have leaned towards yes
and the movie showing the unflinching consequences of that, and particularly the ending where they pack up to go kill the asshole, actively had me hoping that she just lets it go and finds peace, because enough is enough at a certain point
Has anyone besides me completed the entire Caleb Landry Jones 2017 collection
Just to go down the checklist
Get Out - dangerous creepy creep
Twin Peaks - dangerous creepy creep
American Made - dangerous idiot
The Florida Project - workaday guy, tired of Willem Dafoe's shit
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - runs his own business, indignant
Dude's quietly had an insanely good year
he's got the "and" credit in Florida Project, and Willem Dafoe's in that movie!

I wonder if Disney will have an Infinity War trailer ready to run in front of The Last Jedi.
I hear from credible financial sources who have sharp knowledge of Justice League‘s budget that if the film clears $700M-$750M global, after ancillaries, it will turn a profit, but not much. One source close to the film contends that global P&A is $100M, but that’s ridiculous: Warner Bros. was introducing new characters on screen here in Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash, plus BvS and Suicide Squad had global P&A spends in the $150M range. So combined global P&A and production cost is at an estimated $450M. Warner Bros. gets more from ancillary markets than other studios and Justice League talent doesn’t cut in until profit.
And that was with competition of another week of Thor and Wonder, a film of a kids book I didn't even know existed until yesterday. Wonder made $28mil.
Finally, Coco opens in 3 days. If parents and kids chose an adaptation of a book over Justice League, they're going to choose Pixar over JL in droves, especially on a holiday weekend, throughout the weekend at least
Anybody who expected this to make a billion, I said from the beginning were mistaken. I'm going to say on the record now anybody expecting this to have BvS legs, let alone WW legs, is also mistaken. This is a disaster for Warner and everyone's saying as much
It's really unfortunate because obviously you can't pull the plug on the DCCU, but if you're making any changes at all behind the scenes, you have to do it during this year off between the aftermath of this and the release of Aquaman. And I'm just no longer confident they're going to make the changes needed to salvage things
the more I get distance from this the more I really like... the parts that I liked
I don't think I actually need a Justice League 2 but I want several of the next solo films to do well
And I would like them to do a solo Superman movie with the new direction they went in for him but, has there been another one of those scheduled at all?

They keep talking about doing a Man of Steel 2 eventually
On the topic of Star Wars, my local place has really grabbed on to the long-ish runtime and gone nuts on pricing. It's the most expensive ticket I've bough, I think.
But, I've got a nice seat for the 13th, first showing, so it's all good.
I regret how I felt about Man of Steel during and after my first watch. Knowing what I know now about where the rest of the franchise went, it's honestly my second favorite film of the cinematic universe now, and I'm interested in seeing more of Cavill
Aquaman will probably do fine as he is one of the biggest positives of the film and something people seen to dig
Wonder Woman 2 will happen, of course
Everything else
I dunno
Batman was easily the worst part of the movie and I don't think there is much interest in another Ben Affleck Batman movie
Flash was fun but I don't think he can carry a solo movie, he's a supporting player
Cyborg was better than he probably could have been but nothing I would make a solo movie about
Superman was good but there is a lot of baggage there
Basically they should follow through with their "make standalone movies that can have some cross universe ties if the creators want" statement from last months and work with the stuff people actually like and stop trying to chase the MCU Dragon
my ranking is Wonder Woman
the last, hmm, fifth of Justice League
literally everything else so far
Yeah Henry Cavill being good in JL doesn't retroactively make MoS somehow better for me at all
In fact it makes it worse! Cause they could have just done this from the jump!

Honestly the best thing WB could do is what it looks like it is already doing and that's pump the brakes and take stock of where things land, then not commit to a huge timetable of releases each year. Marvel can do that because they found their working formula early and layered each step based on audience response. If WB just take a couple of years off and put something out, see how it lands and adjust it might be able to actually build up to they tempo they seem to want, there's certainly a decent enough cast to play with at least.
I'm not going to knock them for at least moving in the right direction, even if it was a wild swerve rather than a gentle course correction.

Sorry if my original post came off as me meaning that, I just meant I definitely think I like MoS more than SS, BvS, and JL. And with his performance in JL I wouldn't be against a MoS2
So people keep saying batmam was bad but i havent really seen why. Anyone wanna fill me in?
Affleck seemed out of it for the most part. Blank addressed it better above
It was sad to see, especially considering his BvS performance which I thought had great potential for the character's future, at least the solo Batman film.
i think what this movie really gets is a sense of that small town community becoming an ersatz family. ebbing is a place where people never visit, nor do they leave. everyone in this town has grown up with everyone else already being here. they all know each other. and so, what's driving the main conflict and where your sympathies lie isn't just in what you think of mildred or willowby, but it's being driven by mom and dad are fighting. and, from that lens, a lot of stuff just gets murky as hell. mcdonagh puts you into the heads of these people, and shit that should be objectively horrific just....slides off.
the family aspect is especially hammered home by new black chief and penelope. to the characters, they are just completely unthinkable for kind of ugly reasons. but, to the viewer, they are also off, too. they aren't bad people, by any stretch, but their dialogue, how they interact, everything: they feel like they are from a different movie. they're stepdad and stepmom
there is a lot to be said about grief and loss in this movie, but that shit is raw and the movie wears it completely on it's sleeve, no matter how painful it may be. there is some beauty in it, but it is fleeting. mildred is more concerned with righteous fury, and the movie really wants you to examine what the hell that means.
the easiest way to really get what this movie is doing (and it's a lot) is to examine:
dixon, the man no one should ever root for, but we wind up doing it anyway. he is a huge piece of shit, just awful. he's a racist. he's a homophobe. he's a goddamn bully. but he's also the biggest casualty in the war between mom and dad. he's your asshole idiot brother. deep down, he just wants to do one fucking thing right, and the fact he can't has lead him to lash out at everything. he's the guy you make excuses for. how couldn't mildred see something in that?
and, i could gush a lot more about so many individual bits. there is so much behind every scene, and the more i think about it, the more i love it.

They showed a trailer at D23 (or was it SDCC?) And by all accounts it looked like a finished trailer
I wonder if it'll contain spoilers for Ragnarok or if (spoilers ofc)

I think they can reasonably expect that most of the people who would care about that sort of thing will have seen Thor by then
False
First, let's talk about the profit
Second, this thing is bombing everywhere including China. A billion dollars is not only already out of the question, BvS numbers are too and right now it's seriously not even a given this makes $700mil worldwide. Per Deadline even the studio estimates of it making $96mil are likely higher than the actuals will be
And that was with competition of another week of Thor and Wonder, a film of a kids book I didn't even know existed until yesterday. Wonder made $28mil.
