I feel like part of the problem is that they just assume that Marvel has already laid the foundation by making comic book movies a big deal again, and that their characters have such an assumed automatic level of cultural penetration that they're already all set. I don't think either of those things is true.
I think all explainations have been overthinking. They placed their bets on the wrong talent and produced notoriously bad work. They bet it all on Goyer and Snyder and every choice they made after that before snagging Whedon has been just wrong.
If its one thing that brought DC down I think its that they approached superhero movies like action movies when in reality they are soap operas.
That whole thing about theaters clearing all the screens for Justice League...was that something the theaters decided to do or something mandated by WB similar to the Star Wars mandates Disney made?
Because with all the empty seats...a lot of people are probably rather unhappy with one another at the moment.

They should have realized after Watchmen (really before, but definitely after) that Snyder is incapable of handling anything more complicated or compelling than shiny action scenes. 300 had good-looking action, a simple story, and its characters never tried to be anything more than one-note. After that, Snyder has been very enthusiastic about comic properties but really just bad at everything but the fights.

I can't say categorically but the ones near me still had plenty of other showings, it may have been location to location

Theaters around me had about the normal number of screens for Justice League as any other big blockbuster film. Even the smallest theater nearby still has 6 other movies playing. It looks like the theater that went for it the hardest in the area is showing it on 6 of 16 screens.

I can't see the logic in clearing all your screens for a single movie. The profit in a theater is all in concessions and that means you want to maximize the number of people coming in a weekend. No matter how big Justice League was expected to be it wasn't an all-demographics film. People going to the theater to see other movies are less likely to say "fuck it" and go to a dark-looking superhero movie than people showing up to a sold-out showing of Justice League would be to see one of a half-dozen other options.
Which is to say I can't imagine theaters choosing to do that themselves.

No thats what I mean. I yhink they got exactly what they wanted. The problem is that they missed that that makes the marvel movies work is a focus on character. Some marvel movies have had good action and some bad but everyone is always on the same page that making the characters complelling is the most important thing.
WB thought they were starting an action movie franchise and so hired the famous action movie director with comic book movies in his resume and the boilerplate writer with comic book experence and thought they were good but that isnt what anybody wants.
Also the action scenes in mos and bvs are ass but thats beside the point.
I will say that Justice League wasn't particularly dark looking going in
Like the ad campaign has 100% been trying to paint it as a fun superhero flick that would be akin to The Avengers which grossed like 200 million in its opening weekend and was absolutely an all-demographics flick
They just didn't succeed in actually getting people interested enough
I just saw Lady Bird and my first instinct is to request that Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach never make a movie again because Gretta Gerwig is better at it

I know absolutely nothing about this movie so from the title I assume it's either about Lyndon Johnson's wife or Hank Hill's narrow urethra.
If the audience has no emotional investment in what's occurring on-screen, your special effects aren't going to hold their attention by themselves.
See you say that but the Transformers movies still do gangbusters.
The last one failed to even come close to a billion too, despite that also being a guarantee in fans' minds even on this forum
A lot had to go wrong for this particular situation to happen with Warner, it wasn't just one single mistake or even just one notable mistake that was worse than all the others. Although I could see thinking spending over a third of a billion dollars on one film before even getting into marketing is one of the bigger ones
I really think of the Michael Bay Transformers as Don't hate them yet well here is another one.
I really do wonder where the line is when it comes to those movies as they make money but really are far too busy to be entertaining

The only thing that stopped me from immediately seeing Three Billboards was McDoarmand's use of the r word in the trailer, since I wasn't sure how representative that was of her character. But the universal praise is convincing me that it's not what I feared.

Actually the last one was also considered a failure!
I know absolutely nothing about this movie so from the title I assume it's either about Lyndon Johnson's wife or Hank Hill's narrow urethra.
With Colin Farrell reprising his Lobster role more or less.
I'll give it to Lanthimos. He can make me feel deeply uncomfortable for a whole movie.

It's a fucking opera.
My favorite part of this is that Lucas said it 30 or 40 years ago.
Steam
It was pretty good!
I heard the next two of them are even better?
opera has actual characters tho
They are!
I wish more people had seen the third one though
Steam
I might watch them both here soon.
too bad it had one of the worst trailers I've ever seen
It has almost nothing in common with opera
Opera is bitchin!
The only person I found compelling at all was John Hamm and that's probably because John Hamm could play a tree and I'd be enthralled
