Henry Mancini [chat]

The other day I had lunch with my dad and we were talking about music and he said that when he was a kid, in the 1950s, the two STEREOPHONIC albums of his parents' that he loved the most were by Harry Belafonte and Henry Mancini, and he asked if I knew who Henry Mancini was, and duh, of course. I've played Spy Hunter.

Enrico Nicola "Henry" Mancini (April 16, 1924 – June 14, 1994)[1] was an American composer, conductor and arranger, who is best remembered for his film and television scores. Often cited as one of the greatest composers in the history of film,[2][3] he won four Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and twenty Grammy Awards, plus a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.

His best known works include the theme to The Pink Panther film series ("The Pink Panther Theme"), "Moon River" to Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the theme to the Peter Gunn television series. The Peter Gunn theme won the first Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Mancini also had a long collaboration on film scores with the film director Blake Edwards.

My dad, who is a jazz musician, went on to say that in his mind, the Peter Gunn soundtrack album is actually one of the best jazz albums of the 1950s and belongs on the same list as stuff like Kind of Blue. He feels like it was underrated at the time because Mancini was "only" a TV and film composer.

But what a composer!

I used to have a four-CD set of his stuff, including the complete soundtrack to The Days of Wine and Roses. I used to listen to this when I was up late in college, wondering about life, and at other times since. It's good for that.

As you sit around the warm house on a cold holiday night, pour yourself a glass of something calming and put this dude on. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Let everything go, just for a little while.

I liked the thing they did in The Sopranos where they mashed up a Mancini tune with Every Breath You Take.

⸘Jeyub‽ demands his hideous due. If @Quid had so much delivered sandwich knowledge before the last thread collapsed, that would have lead to safety.

But now? Now @Quid must share a fast-pickling method before the sangwich arrives upon that fell doorstep.

Mancini has a big career in having his work being stolen in Egyptian cinema with no credit! It's pretty cool.

You dip the sandwich in to beef juice.

Which in this case was also microwaved.

Any recommendations for a full album (live or studio) that I should listen to straight through while I zone out and either write or play video games?

If I were picky, I'd prefer more modern stuff, though I understand there's some classic rock that is a must-listen too. Nothing EDM or electronic or whatever we call it nowadays, hip-hop, alt-rock, punk, pop are all welcome.

I'm generally pretty open to suggestions though, so throw 'em at me! <3

have you heard of Au Jus?

In America we call the sandwich (usually beef that has been soaking in the jus as well) that you dip into the jus a French Dip.

    Path of Exile is amazing.

Good timing if you're thinking of getting into it, as the new season & expansion hit Dec. 9th.

A slight update to this: look around for a leveling video or build idea ahead of time. It can be mildly overwhelming at first between the skill tree, currency, skills, etc. Fortunately, the community, in particular the popular Twitch streamers, tend to do a good job of putting out guides and content to help newer players get started.

Vice is interviewing the guy who made God's Not Dead.

Apparently he launched a Jesus streaming service called Pureflix.

He stars in a lot of the programs as an actor too.
