I've never before seen a new show absolutely not understand, at even a basic fundamental level, what the previous version was about more than this show.
The show has more heart than the first episode would suggest. Not really going to go into detail right now, but I've actually learnex the names of most if the characters and am not relying on their nicknames.

you know, I'm actually interested. My initial reaction is "this cannot be done (well)" but I dunno, I think you could make it a very tense psychodrama if you get a showrunner that's really on board with the source material, but it would require extraordinarily good acting and directing.
If it's adaptation that just takes the vague idea of the premise and does something noir-SF-ish with it, then it will be easier to film but much less interesting. I expect that's what will happen but I'm willing to be surprised.
edit: all that said, it's not a book that NEEDED to be adapted and fuck it, if you want to adapt Mieville do Embassytown or something with a more straightforward narrative and conceit. Un-Lun-Dun would make a great Neverwhere-style miniseries.

Embassytown would be a shit-ton more expensive though, as cool as it'd be. I dunno, I feel like they could make this work? I'll stay optimistic anyway, I'd expect Mieville to be somewhat careful about who he signs his work over to
Kraken would probably be simple enough to adapt as well

I thought the whole point of The City and The City was there is no actual difference between the cities, it’s just a collective game of lets pretend and everyone just goes along with it out of cultural pressure and inertia.

IIRC, one of the cities was considerably more affluent than the other because it was open to Western tech investing and the other was not. So there are some neat ways you can reflect that in architecture, costume, and general street culture if you were thoughtful about it.
The framing of that photo might be exaggerating the sharp delineation with the tree in the middle, but I think stuff like one city using mercury streetlights while the other uses sodium, or a festival going on in only one city could be shot well.
But yeah, it's going to be super easy to underestimate your audience and just fill the entire show with shots just like that.
Yeah I feel like the stuff they'll use to differentiate the cities will be more... obvious than I would like? I mean the cities are supposed to be pretty similar to the point that if you're a tourist you need a guide because if you breach you have fucked up.
So the first word we heard from the show-runner was that he believed the Heathers wernt the real bad guys in the original movie.
I cant decide if its more likely that that articles take is completely accurate about his intentions and his “the heathers are the good guys” crap is an attempt at a course correction or if he honestly massively misread the room about how people would take the Heathers.

Nothing here seems particularly great, but I have to give a thing heavily featuring Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, and Stephen Root a shot
I am down for this.

He thought the original Heather's were the good guys because they were waspy popular kids. His are intended as villains.
Nah what he tries to claim is that the heathers were not the villains in the movie and that he wanted to stay true to that. He believes the Heathers are aspirational characters you should want to be.
Thats what he says he believes anyway but it sounds insane to me.
You're point is irrelevant! You can't even spell my name right!

Networks are hunting for the next Game of Thrones, and throwing the money that you'd need to throw at a show that even approaches what Game of Thrones does is incredibly risky, so it's safer to hunt down stories with built-in audiences so you know at least someone will be watching

I couldn't get into reading The City & The City. I got as far as chapter 5 I think when I stopped.

Well that line tells you everything you need to know about the show in a nutshell.
I hadn’t seen it yet but yeah. Did Mainframe just lose everyone at their company that had a soul over the years?
I mean, granted, YTV had some bad shows back in the day so maybe everyone left and they only kept the worst employees.
Don't be! I suck! The new episodes of The Tick are very good!
I watched two last night, that show is good!
Ooh I have to remember to tell my wife this, she devoured the first one.
She also discovered Metalocalypse like two months ago (I know) and is still sad that there's no more for her to watch.

Wow, this will be a complete nightmare. I love the book but how the hell...
And here comes the BBC to prove me right

I'm worried that they are just gonna go with a kinda lazy visual cue to signify what is part of one city and what is part of another

I spelled it wrong on porpoise because it was part of the point.
