edited January 2018 in Debate and/or Discourse
Thanks to @Tenzytile for reminding me! It's that time again, when creative people start telling other creative people how good a job they're doing. 2017 was a legitimately great year for quality cinema, with a fresh and sorely-needed emphasis on diverse talent on both sides of the camera. The best thing I see about this year is how so many of the films are waaaay outside the traditional MPAAS wheelhouse and come from voices sorely underrepresented in media, while also many of those film directly confront topical and heady subjects, like the importance of the First Amendment, finding yourself as a young queer person, racism, and normalized sexual abuse; there's still plenty of room in there for legitimately novel comedies and some more familiar fare in terms of family dramas and coming-of-age stories, but even those turn convention on its head in many ways.

Without further ado, here's a list of the most talked-about films this season, and here in this thread feel free to discuss those you've seen and lament the ones you haven't. At the bottom of the OP will be a continuously-updated list of the various award nominees and winners, so check back when you're not busy at the movies.

If we're trying to predict winners of anything, don't look at me, but if we're just listing good stuff, here are some of my favorites that aren't on the list:

    Okja
    Colossal
    Mother!
    A Ghost Story
    The Square
The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Mother! is a movie I'd love to see get awards.

Logan is going to get shafted in anything that isn't special effects.

Mother! is honestly a film I left the theater unsure of what I watched, and then led to all sorts of thought and evaluation in the days and weeks that followed.

A film capable of masterfully producing such an awful emotional response, followed by days of unpacking, is art.

It may not be enjoyable, and the critics / masses may have panned it horribly, but it should be recognized.

I know y'all are largely into the film side, but the TV side of those nominations has some great stuff.

Black-ish vs Master of None for TV comedy is one. Black-ish is basically the best family sitcom on TV. It's basically TV's most tired trope, but honed to a mirror polish. And Master of None's second season was a hell of a thing that went some crazy places. Some of the best damn writing on any TV show, and some seriously high concept episodes.

The tv drama actor category also hasthis set:
Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us"
    Freddie Highmore, “The Good Doctor"
    Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul"

Seriously, any one of those 3 is an easy win most years.

    Commentary on the Golden Globes:

We all know how bad the Globes are; it's a bunch of foreign starfuckers trying to throw a party where celebrities show up, and if it wasn't open bar it probably wouldn't ever happen. This year the Globes err more on the safe side than the laughably awful side, and the nominations broadly are very expected. Saying that, I find it interesting how big a boost this has given to The Shape of Water (which hopefully I'm seeing tonight), and how many nominations The Greatest Showman received for a movie that has zero buzz and hasn't been widely released in many markets. As well, there's a nomination on here for Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver that is Pia Zadora-levels of perplexing; Elgort was the least dynamic and interesting part of that film, and the film itself was merely okay, and Carrell, Elgort, and Jackman's nominations really look like the HFPA having trouble coming up with comedy/musical nominations other than Franco and Kaluuya.

Anyway, Globes gonna Globes, and it's best not to waste too much energy on the shoulda/coulda.

That's more to do with Horror being treated as a second class genre at awards shows so the studios submit as comedy.

Oh, and probably my last word on the Globes: it's weird how A) we have a lot of nominations from films that either have been just released or haven't been released or screened yet, and B) there's still a good 20 days left in the eligible season.

Films nominated for GG Awards that are not yet released or not widely-released:
    - I, Tonya
    - The Post
    - The Greatest Showman
    - Ferdinand
    - Downsizing
    - Molly's Game
    - All the Money in the World
    - Phantom Thread

As well, The Shape of Water and The Disaster Artist were only released three days ago, well after all the voting had been finalized. How even the slightest pretense of consensus can be reached, I have no idea.

I missed the Globes, but I’ve seen a few clips today and so far my favorite has been this pre-award exchange.

Ron Howard: “We are honored to be here to present the award for Best Director.”
Natalie Portman: “And here are the all male nominees.”

I haven’t seen Oprah’s speech yet, but my social media was clogged this morning with people demanding she run for President of the US, so I’m guessing it was pretty good. I’ll have to give it a watch tomorrow.

    It was so good.

That sounds kind of mean spirited? :(

I just watched a clip of it. I think it was just James trying to stop Tommy from saying something stupid, and James knew he only had a 90s for his speech. He was cutting it close without Tommy giving a speech too, lol.

And it's not like Tommy's getting the award for The Room. This was James' time in the spotlight.

I loved how visibly uncomfortable that comment made all the nominees.

Ron Howard going from a cheerfully shocked laugh to an awkwardly grinning “oh shit she’s right” nod really makes it for me.

It was a nice little moment of "oh, yeah, despite the all black dress up party and the fancy pins, we're still pretty bad at this."

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

It’s especially damning in light of Lady Bird being nominated in virtually every other category

Ladybird’s directing is decent but not great or anything

As usual the focus is on who gets nominated and not who gets directing jobs in the first place—this is not a situation where half the movies are directed by women and the HFPA is just sexist. There isn’t parity to begin with, and although recognition of female talent through awards is certainly helpful, it really shouldn’t be the primary means of solving the problem.
