Putting points into getting one guy proficient mining at the start is definetly not a waste. Its fucking vital to a strong year 1. It also saves a huge amount of points. A prof miner can carve out way more rock with 1 pick than 2 chump miners can. And the skill points cost less than a third of what the pick does.
A proficient miner can have you set up with floodgate farming and indoor storage and workshops by late spring.
Something is horribly wrong with my current fort. Every time someone goes to eat, their food is mysteriously "misplaced or lost". 150 food has disappeared in a couple of minutes.
Man, I love the combat system in Adventure mode. Nothing like killing an elf with the decapitated head of a dwarf, or beating someone with their own weapon :P

Can you cook booze into food? I don't remember.
Is the food stored outside, and if so, is it raining? Because something similar happened to me, someone told me that the rain knocks things out of your hands or something along those lines.
Oh boy, here we go again. *Updates* Hmmm, ERROR: MISSING_ARMOR_SHIRT. *Creates new world* There we go. Hey, how do I delete the old corrupt world? Man, I haven't even started playing again and I'm already having trouble. :P
I finally have a lava smelting operation going. Now I just need to figure out how to make a proper military, since its the only thing I have yet to do in this game.

Is there a command that will center the mouse cursor on the screen? My cursor seems to vanish quickly after starting a game and then I'm unable to find it again.

Had something to add on to this. Like, once I activate them do I just leave them like that? Or do I just wait until something happens.

After countles, countless stupid random world drowning stuff, I finally get the farm working again. And 15 minutes later with no saves my farmer is drowned. Motherfucker. I sure will enjoy doing all that work again.

Hoohah! Operations uner effect, sort of.
They seem to have given up on moving the cage out of the carpentry.
What does it mean when it says that a job item is lost or destroyed? I just started a new fort and its been happening to my farmer like every 30 seconds.

Move the seeds inside. They're getting washed away by the rain, most likely.
Supplies:
Iron Picks 2
Iron Axe 1
Plump Helmet Spawn 16
Pig Tail Seeds 9
Sweet Pod Seeds 9
Cave Wheat Seeds 9
Dimple Cup Spawn 9
Dwarven Rum 16
Dwarven Beer 11
Dwarven Ale 11
Dwarven Wine 11
Turtle 10
Animals:
None
Note: This build is very focused on getting enough food to last the winter in case of early migrants and less on starting up crafting. Hence the use of two miners to quickly blast your way to the river and making room in the fort for future crafters.
All right, after a couple pages of "D: OH GOD WATER" I've decided to share my farm layout.
The farm plot menaces with spikes of talc. (Or so I like to think)
Pink = Channels
Teal = Doors (set to not allow pets)
Red circles = Floodgates
Yellow = Lever
I basically add a triple layer of defense around EVERYTHING to prevent a world flood. Seed stockpile is in the upper left corner. Lever is sealable in the event of an invasion (slimy goblin paws...) and generally out of the way for the random chasm creature that likes to pull crap. I can also dig to it in the event of the hallway to the farm becoming flooded. I mine out the little 1x1 squares around the farm plot before I make it so that the farmer doesn't make a giant stack of rock right in the doorway. Not really necessary but I like the visual effect it gives.
Making a path from the channel to the river allows the miner to escape if he accidentally steps off the floodgate in the wrong direction when he builds it. Also, I like to leave the area just north of it available for another farm plot so I can just mine out a path to the other one (and the seed stockpile), preventing the need of another set of floodgates.

Do you get seeds back from harvesting or do you have to trade for new ones?
You get a seed from each plant you eat/brew/process in some way, but not from cooking directly. You do get more than one plant per seed though, each square on the farm plot will have several units of food when it grows, with more growing from higher level farmers.
I usually start farming within 15 minutes of beginning the game. Dig the main hallway (3 vertical),it floods when you hit riverside, grower starts planting, wala food. When you begin a fortress you dont have to be picky about farms, grow stuff where you can when you can until you can get your official flood rooms up off the ground.
Thank you, all you people drowning your fortresses with your floodgate cockups. You have provided me with many lulz. It is much appreciated.
I've created many successful fortresses, and have yet to use floodgates for irrigation. I just create small farms along the entire bank of the cave river, always keeping a tile of rock between the river and the potential farmland. I smooth the rock connecting river and farmland, and add fortifications (murder holes, I presume). When the river floods, it comes through the fortifications, irrigating the soil. Beasties can't come through the fortifications, and dwarves can't get dragged into the river; my farmers are perfectly safe. The seasonal floods don't even flood enough tiles to pose the slightest threat. It's lazy and safe.
The only issue is the sheer amount of vertical space farms take up. But that provides fodder for impressive screenshots. Every cloud.

Wala...? You mean voila. There's an accent in there somewhere too, but I can't remember where.
I wrote up the wiki entry on that setup. Floodgates are for chumps and people who love drowning dwarves!
Yeah but it doesn't menace with spikes of talc now does it? :x
Seriously though that's a damn good idea, although doesn't it spread the farms kinds far apart vertically and require a bit more planting/harvesting time?

I hope my mason recovers. She got ambushed by 3 snakemen by the river. She killed 2, but the third paralyzed her and wailed on her until I could get my soldier on duty and in the area. Her other wounds healed but both of her legs are still red.

Edit: Woot, success! Didn't flood the whole base.

A troop of macaques have come in the night to steal all of my food, and my dwarves are sleeping.
You dont really need those. It keeps shit from getting messy but dwarves seem to do just fine storing their shit on the bedroom floor.
Here is what i have:
LOTS of wood
Enough space for a carpenters shop
Some strangely effective dwarves and a novice architect
Also, farm plots, why cant I place one?
OH HELL YES!
I'm making a bed SO HARD right now.
a bed to the MAX!
I dont need you penny arcade! We are so over right now!
You have to place them on muddy rock. You'll need to flood a section of your fort first.
Select more than one stone when choosing the material. One stone = 3 bridge 'units' I believe. Maximum is 6 stones per bridge.
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
Its saying i dont have a free bed though...

OPut it in the shops build queue they'll get ot it when they wake upq

I love the DF music.
Toady actually wrote and recorded it himself. He posted a tab of one of the songs on his boards a while back.

Besides, I can set up a working farm before the summer flood anyways.
