They will but if they get their dumb asses killed they blame you for it.
Seems ike everyone builds past the river here Is that really much better?
I know a lot of people do it for defense purposes, I prefer building before the river, then maybe moving inwards later
I build past the river to get everything closer to the lavaworks. Hauling shit from the magma forges waaaaaaaaaaay back is really lame. Actually in my current fortress lots of it is between the magma and the chasm.
MY current and msot successful fortress is in it's second year All efore the River Currently. Basically I built based on the idea I'd move everything inwards later and use my old fortress as a kind of military camp of barracks, a dining hall for troops and a few basic workshops. Think this will work?
How quick should I aim to get to the magma? Using wood furnaces and such is a bitch and a half but I doubt I have the army to deal with any monsters yet
Does the frequency of Magma beasties depend on the map chosen? I have been using the lava river for quite some time now and nothing has jumped out at me and tried to roast my dwarves. My steel equipped lava guard are getting bored.

You'll get a magma man or fire imp on rare occasions.
It's the shit AFTER the magma you need to worry about.

I was a bit disturbed awhile ago to hear that Oddom Iklisttekkud, Farmer died of hunger, although I had a vast abundance of plants, meat and cooked meals sitting around..."That's how God weeds out the dumb ones..." Except a bit later I discovered:
He was kind of doomed either way, but (potentially) not as dumb as originally suspected.

Jesus christ. How do i stop my dwarves from trekking across the globe to retrieve a dead guys pants? I mean, hes covered in about 7 elephants.. and they will all die. I have a few stockpiles outside, so i cant just say dont go outside

You have to turn of "dwarves collect corpses" in the refuse orders section.
Now if I can keep my dwarves from trying to wear the burning pair of pants stuck on the bridge until it burns out, I'll be able to claim the riches beyond the magma!
Now that I'm done with my turn, maybe we should talk about strategy for the Succession Game? During my reign I managed to get up the following industries into a stable production line:
Leatherworking
Clothesmaking
Craftsworking
Crossbow Making
Carpentry
Brewing
Cooking
Masonry (Legendary from artifact)
Along with facilities for:
Blacksmithing
Jewelcrafting (the maker of the rock flute got legendary jewel making, yippee.)
There's so much wood that a single carpenter working at full pace can't even widdle down the ever growing stockpile the wood cutters produce, so doing traditional smithing until we reach the magma shouldn't even be an issue. I only added a token defense, however. Other people are better and more experienced at designing elaborate world ending doomsday devices.
I took the fortress which was, in my opinion, far too compact and spread it around a bit. Widened the hallways, expanded shops so that they could be streamlined with their appropriate stockpiles (hopefully that won't be too much work for Skimble Shanks to sort through). I tried to keep just a single entrance 3 wide going into the fort (I'd normally open mine up a full five tiles and move the depot inside) with everything placed beyond the river.
Anyways, questions, comments, concerns from the other players on the list?
If your question is "What the hell are you talking about, Valkun?"
Were he smart enough to swim across the river to my giant tree farm he could have survived...The stranger thing: he's a farmer and he's got no business crossing the bridge - all of my farms at the moment are on the west side of the river, so there's nothing for him on or over the bridge...
...except death ...and burning...but mostly death.

If your question is "What the hell are you talking about, Valkun?"
P.S. When it's your turn Synthetic, will you name an appropriate dwarf Patrick Stewart? The legend must live on.
I just got done reading your turn, Valkun -- excellent work! I like the narrative approach. So, have you PMed whoever is next, to ensure they know it's their turn? Many thanks for getting this thing kick-started, incidentally.
As for strategy, I think we're off to a good start. I saw you widened the hallways a bit, but their still narrow for my taste -- I like all hallways to be either 4 or 5 spaces wide, in my fortresses. Once dwarf and pet population increases, it'll bog down with only 3.
That's my only input so far. I'm more a nation-building leader than a military leader.
I actually made an account so I could talk about this rather than lurking...
So yeah, one of my carpenters flipped out and decided to make this for me.
Wow, thanks, a fucking BARREL. It'll go nicely next to the legendary TABLE and WEAPON RACK. Not just any barrel though, this one has an image of a cut gem, MADE FROM CUT GEMS. Yeah. If I don't get any legendary weapons or armour from my dwarves soon, they're going to be 'volunteering' to test the new heated swimming pool I've planned. I do hope the magma doesn't leak into the water. That would just be terrible.
So anyway, after my first fortress starved to death, I think I got my food sorted this time. Should I wait until I have a reasonable military force until I dig for the magma, or will I be ok if I just trap everything to buggery? I have a nice little self sufficient fortress, 90 or so dwarves and a bunch of nobles, all before the river, and I get the feeling I might be being a little too cautious.
Demons are not affected by traps. You have to kill them with military.

I started playing yesterday, I'm into year two and some guy got possessed. I have no idea what that means in terms of the game, and the wiki seems to be down. Also, is there any way to extract ore/gem from a wall without just mining it down?I want to have lovely smooth walls everywhere but I notice my stone detailers won't work on a block of wall with something in it, and I don't want to knock chunks out of everything.

I sent Skimble the save file and a PM to let him know its his turn. As for the hallways, I had to work with what was left to me, my fortresses look like fortified cities with neat little five tile wide roads leading off everywhere (alleys are 3). When that third dimension hits, I'll finally be able to build proper multistory buildings inside my fort. Consequently, I probably won't see the light of day for some time after the release.

It means he'll take over one of the shops he has any skill for and grab up materials (if you have them) to make a legendary artifact. If you don't have the appropriate shop, he'll stand around waiting for you to build it. If he stands in his shop without a messaging saying that he's started work, you don't have the appropriate material. If you Q over the building, he'll mutter vaguely what he needs and you'll have to infer from that what he needs. (The wiki is working fine).
Also, if the dwarf doesn't successfully create the artifact in a given time, it'll go crazy which can manifest in different ways. Murderous rampage through the fortress is one of those paths.
Oddly, that's less food than I normally have using a full crew. I guess it'll last longer with only two mouths to feed. I wasn't even aware you could remove dwarves from the lineup, as it were.
Yeah, you want to edit a line in \data\init\init.txt It's pretty self explanatory once you're in there, nicely commented.
Nice, I was able to change the windowed mode resolution to 800x600 (from 640x480) in there too. Thanks.
For more-closely-square tiles, I recommend 1600x600 with the curses_800X600 font. It makes relative sizes of rooms and whatnot easier to gauge and less elongated.

Dammit, I really don't want to lose my legendary carpenter, but it looks like I'm going to as he's in a strange mood and needs a shell, whereas I don't have any. I can only hope my fisherdwarves catch a turtle.
