I was maybe a couple minutes behind you, and I had a blast. Made friends along the way, too.
The overcrowded starting areas were kinda annoying but also really hilarious and rewarding to see.
The amount of new people to Classic conversing with the people who have done it was hilarious and entertaining as well. I noticed it was a bit...meaner....on Horde side than Alliance, but just might've missed mean Allies.

Are discord servers free? Trying to find a good way for the six of us Horde players on Fairbanks to coordinate. Once we have the guild up we should be fine.

Snuck over to Teldrassil to do some early quests there because it's less crowded

I don't know if I ran into mean people, but in that first hour or so it was survival of the quickest. The spawn rate was bonkers and it just didn't matter.

True that. I ran around stabbing many mobs with the dagger to tag while casters wasted time casting. I felt bad, but....
I am intensely curious how y'like Classic as it progresses, Thawmus, as it's new to you. For any of the truly new, honestly.

I'm currently still where I was at after the stress test (extremely positive), but yeah, we'll see as time passes.
I'm playing a NE Hunter, but I've never done the NE zones before. Just finished all of the Teldrassil quests last night, so tonight it'll probably be a lot of fishing, cooking, mining (engineering), and questing in Darkshore.
Also that's maybe the last time I do Teldrassil, holy crap that's an awful zone.
Logged in last night around 8PM Central after the kiddos went to bed and was greeted with a 10k queue and I wasn't even mad. I was expecting to not be able to play the first few nights.
Don't care that I'm not going to be the first to 60.
Don't care that I can't get a foot in the door early and corner the gathering good market.
Don't care that I'm probably going to be a week or so behind everyone else when I have the time to wait for the long queue.
Do care about playing a super fun game and catching up with some old friends.
So, last night, I got home late in the first time in forever and had to get in the back of the queue. 90 minute wait, whatever, I guess I'll go eat dinner. I will be patient.
My cat knocked the wire out of the modem 75 minutes later. Okeedokee. That's not frustrating at all.
They had just put up three more servers, so I slid on to Ashkandi for giggles. Brill was a complete shitshow even here, but I grinded through and got to 11, mainly to kill time (Fairbanks had something like a 600+ minute queue at this point). It felt good, but as I was doing it I realized....
I have never played Alliance. Ever. Always been tempted, but, FOR THE HORDE, etc. Even in the above music video (with the hilarious "I'll play Freebird" in the beginning), I was more pumped for "For the HORDE" than For the Alliance. I figure maybe this is the time I should change.
Pagle was down to a 2 minute queue, so I hopped on a ground up to 6 in Elwynn. It's so weird.

So, as of now anyway, Pagle is our Alliance server, do we have a Horde server ?

Good things come to those who wait, right?
For me Classic WoW has almost been like a school reunion.
Been catching up with people I haven’t spoken to for 10 years. At the same time though we just jumped right in to things with the same dumb jokes we were making about each other a decade ago.
It is kind of surreal.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Part of me wishes I'd gotten into WoW back when it was relatively new (my roommate introduced me to it right around the start of 2006) but after playing a while on a free-month account it wasn't doing it for me and I just fell off.
I don't really have any plan to try it now (I don't think I could handle the general old-school game design) but I'm having a blast watching a couple streamers I like who put dozens/hundreds of hours into the game getting back into it. Gonna be good for background noise while I work on other stuff, I think.

got in a half hour over lunch, no queue on Pagle
so much fun! There are a mess of people trying to kill wolves and kobolds outside the Abbey
Some days Blue wonders why anyone ever bothered making numbers so small; other days she supposes even infinity needs to start somewhere.
I got to play with a friend for a while, which was nice and cool. Then we suddenly both got disconnected and the queue to get back in was 20k, which sucked.
We got a charter signed for <Sixteen Daggers> yesterday, hop on Discord to look for a ginvite!

I'm going to force my fiancee to play this with me. She never played original WoW, only modern expansions like Legion and BFA.

Did they implement the cross-realm stuff from modern-WoW to Classic? Like if you're in a relatively player-empty zone you'll start seeing people from other servers?

I believe they are specifically not doing cross realm stuff outside of battlegrounds, which is why they’re restricting the initial number of servers to keep each one as populated as possible in the long run so as to avoid merging any of them down the line.

Currently the population of each realm is segmented into “layers” (ie zone instances) to accommodate demand, but everyone you see is on your server. Eventually they plan to eliminate layering.

good fun, and to hell with warriors being so weapon dependent.. my goodness.
We were killing Wendigos at level 5 and a level-5-required BoE green 2H sword dropped. The crap I am using is 3-5 damage and this thing is 20-30 damage! I need to run my stubby legs all the way to Stormwind to train to be able to use it, apparently, but dang I bet it'll be sweet.
also, the "best" part of this experience is how lively the chats are...and i mean there are asshats but there are also a ton of really chill people...very fun!

Explicitly and on purpose no. Though the exact opposite (too many in same spot, split them up) yes.
Also, there are no empty areas currently unless you're taking lvl 50+ zones.
I'm curious to see what kind of retention Classic will have and what kind of future development Blizzard will devote to it. Would be really amusing to see it eventually get expansions intended to add more content but keep the Classic feel without the more contentious changes like group finder, or dumbed down talent system. Also new 40 man raids. They've got years of art assets to work with to fast track something like that I feel like the appeal of pre-BC WoW might get stale for a lot of people if its stuck in a state of the same content forever.
I don't think "vanilla's game systems were better after all" is the point of Classic. It's about pure nostalgia, reliving the original game exactly as it was. People have a lot of nostalgia for BC and WotLK too, and those wouldn't be the same if you tried to modify them to be more vanilla-like. So I think they'll roll out expansions exactly as they were back then, game systems and all.
