The Ancient Greeks had an interesting take on Hope. They believed that Hope was one of the great evils unleashed upon mankind by Pandora. Hope however, was released last, long after all the other evils were loosed upon the world. In this way, Hope provided a relief for mankind from their torments, if only for a short while.
The Greeks were smart people. Hope makes life worth living.
Or does it?
Francis Bacon (Knowledge is Power) said that "Hope makes for a good breakfast, but a poor supper." Nietzsche takes a similar view based on the Greek legend that "Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torment of man."
In a way, they are right, although I say they take a narrow view of the matter.
Rather,
Samuel Johnson tells us that "Yet it is necessary to hope, though hope should always be deluded, for hope itself is happiness, and its frustrations, however frequent, are yet less dreadful than its extinction."
So here's to you, SE++, may you live you days where Hope springs eternal, for where there is life, there is Hope.
