[Star Trek] Is Good

Star Trek is a TV show about the future, and the optimistic belief that our problems with injustice and inequality can be solved with wise words, a double-overhand karate chop, and an inverse muon field from the main deflector array.

Star Trek Discovery is currently available on CBS All Acess in the United States and on Netflix worldwide.

In America and Australia, you can watch every previous series on Netflix right now, and some of the movies are (or were) available on Prime streaming.

Star Trek Continues is a fan series that is actually pretty good and has some terrific stunt casting. I just watched an episode where a computer console on the bridge explodes and Kirk and Bones wake up in the Civil War. I defy anyone to tell me this is not the most Star Trek premise ever. This is a fun show that I recommend to people who have access to Youtube and 40 minutes of time to kill.

Star Trek Adventures is a new tabletop roleplaying game that is very good.

It originated in a fanfic as a parody of the concept

But more on topic, Garak is good

You can also listen to podcasts about Star Trek.

    1. Treks and the City sees two ladies talk about TNG, episode by episode. I’ve just started listening to this.
    2. Seven of Wine sees two ladies, but different ones, talk about Voyager and also get drunk every episode. Tom Paris is fantasised about openly.

I add my recommendation to Jakes for Star Trek Continues. It’s an incredibly sincere attempt to make more TOS and grapple in that familiar wide-eyed, optimistic and sometimes clunkingly on the nose manner with social issues.

I just heard about Treks and the City over the weekend when ultimate podcast guest Paul F Tompkins tweeted about an appearance. I did just this year listen to the entirety of a different TNG re-watch podcast, but there were zero ladies on it and not one PFT appearance so it almost doesn't even count.

I got adventures for Christmas, haven’t read much yet but the section that’s inuniverse communiques about famous episodes is a great idea. Kor talking about organia and romulans talking about the TOD episode that’s basically submarines. Real fun stuff.

Discovery returns to Netflix on 8th of January.

Seeing that tabletop RPG made me nostalgic for some of the old PC games. Some of them like Dominion Wars were trash but some were great. Give me a new Birth of the Federation you lobeless amateurs! Pretty sure I spent more time playing that than Skyrim.

Try the New Horizon mod for Stellaris, you can play a lore friendly galaxy, mirror universe, or a Birth of The Federation style map, where the major powers will be same as BoTF

That episode is so good and they handle the inconsistencies between TOS and the TNG/DS9 era so right. It's a great love letter to TOS by the writers of DS9.

And then you can watch Enterprise for how to handle inconsistencies between 60s Trek and 90s-2000s Trek so wrong, just for the contrast.

  • KingofMadCowsKingofMadCows Registered User regular
DS9 was always willing to look at Trek as a whole, both the good and the bad. And they stepped back once in a while to recognize the silliness of parts of the franchise and poke fun at it.

But too many fans are taking Star Trek too seriously and treating it like dogma.

You can also watch all of the old series on netflix in Australia too btw (which I did for DS9 and TNG this year)

I'm listening to Treks and the City and it's really fun hearing these kind of artsy, drama-y people from an improv comedy background reacting to TNG. It's so much more refreshing than listening to another breathy nerd.

What in the fuck. No mention of The Greatest Generation ?!!?
Maybe one of the best Trek Podcasts right now. Comedy Podcast where two friend sat down and watched every episode of Next Gen then riff about it. They recently completely TNG and are now doing season 1 of DS9. I super recommend it.

Also Literary Treks is great if you are deep into Star Trel books like I am. I guess there's the entire http://trek.fm network, which Literary Treks is apart of, but I don't know a ton about the rest of the shows.

I'm almost done with Star Trek Continues. It really pleases me that in the episodes where they've invoked social issues (sex slavery, refugees, affirmative action, child abuse), they've done it in an earnest, retro-dorky way, as is their remit, but have also consistently landed right side up on those issues. A couple of the earnest speeches are very sweet and touching.
