I remember trying this after playing KOTOR and gave up after the first hour or so.
That mod list is intimidating
The only thing you reeeally need is the restored content mod, and that was a three click install in Steam
I do recommend people playing female Exiles to get the mod to recruit Handmaiden instead of Disciple though. Disciple was super dry from what I remember
Something that's bothered me since first playing KotOR 2:
ENDING SPOILERS
How exactly did Kreia plan to kill the Force? My friend theorized that she planned to use the Exile's wound to echo across the galaxy, but that's the only concrete idea of it I've heard

so you're right, as far as I know

Oh hey I just bought this the other day, never played it before. Is it really ok if I don't play the first one beforehand? Or maybe that makes it feel more in-media-res, like the movies kind of feel.

So long as you don't mind knowing the twist of the first game (if you don't know it already), you can do so. It would definitely give you a media res feel
Are buffs in this as broken as 1? I remember 1 shotting everything with knights Valor and master flurry.
Also does it let you bank levels until you unlock being a Jedi like in 1 so you get extra Jedi levels instead of wasting stuff in pre Jedi stuff.
I could be wrong, but if I recall you start as a jedi guardian/sentinel/consular in this one, and you can pick a class specialization later.

I'm in if this game will run on a 2010 MacBook air with like 2 gigs of memory
I know it's an old game but it's always a gamble with this baby

I mean, yeah probably? I think the min specs for it are like, 500 megs.

then i'll check when I get home
this'll be my first time through, though I'm vaguely aware of kotor stuff

Buffs are powerful, but I don't know if I'd call them broken.
You can bank levels, it's a fairly popular tactic for some players since leveling will heal your character without expending a turn or healing items It can come in handy in some of the harder combats.
But you start the game as a Jedi and eventually prestige class into a better Jedi (or Sith), so I don't know if banking levels is as necessary as it was in KotOR for a strong end game. Also, there's not really a hard level cap in 2 as much as a "I've killed everyone and done everything so there's no more XP" point.
Some of your companions can become Jedi though, so maybe it's a good idea to let them bank their levels? I don't know, my party normally consisted of Jedi with force lightning and droids with flame throwers as soon as such was available (subbed out if a meatbag was required to progress). So, YMMV.

Kotor has amazingly simple combat as long as you pause to do your inputs occasionally during large fights.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Finally one of these I should be able to play without massive technical issues.
KotOR II was the first contemporary game I bought after building my first PC (it was 2 years old at the time, but compared to my previous PCs, which could only handle DOS-era stuff, it was a huge step up) and I played it very badly, being completely unfamiliar with d20 systems at the time.
I've had KotOR2 on my top 10 games list despite not having played it in years, so maybe it's time to re-play it and put its standing to the test.

Banking levels doesn't provide anything for your character in KotOR 2. You start as a Jedi. At level 15, when you lean hard enough toward light / dark side, you can choose a prestige class.
Banking levels DOES have an impact on your other characters. Actual spoilers.
You can train your non-Jedi to be Jedi in this game.

That's... odd. It should just be www.deadlystream.com, and click the download section. However, most of those mods are either available on Nexus or Steam. Maybe it's an IP/adblock thing? I'm in the US. I know you have to register to get unlimited downloads, but even publicly, you can download like five per day.

Yeah you can skip if you want, there are two background wars that have huge, huge repercussions in Sith Lords, the Mandalorian Wars, and the Jedi Civil war. It's purely optional.
The Mandalorians are Boba/Jango Fett's people who are way into proving their honor through warfare. 4,000 years before the films, they were at the height of their power. They curbstomped the Republic until a faction of Jedi, lead by the charismatic Revan and Malak, joined the fight and led them to victory.
The second event was that *something* happened to Revan and Malak which turned them to the darkside. They took a good chunk of their Republic fleet and went rogue. They once more clobbered the Republic until collapse, until Revan was betrayed by Malak, and Malak was eventually killed at the climax of the first game, destroying his command center with it.
Spoilers follow:
The twist of the first game is that the player character was Revan, badly wounded but with his memories wiped by the Jedi Council. He/she either rallies the Republic, defeats Malak and finds redemption by destroying the darkside relic known as the Star Forge, or kills Malak, assumes the Sith throne, and quietly disappears for reasons unknown.
That's basically all you need to know, the rest is pretty exhaustively explained in Sith Lords, some times by multiple characters who were on different sides of events. In some ways, Sith Lords goes into greater depth than even KOTOR1 into those background events. There are some cool references to the original Knights of the Old Republic comic series, but they're just bonuses.
That said, I'm interested in how people handle the tutorial level, because I really like Peragus for a lot of reasons.

Huh. It works now. It was not working this morning.
Hmm, well I have enjoyed these group playthroughs, but I'm not sure if I want to play through this one again - though I don't think I used any of the updates or patches when I played before.
Kreia was written by someone who thinks Star Wars is stupid and it shows and it is amazing.

I have always liked the idea that if the Force has a will then that implies goals, that there is something the Force wants. In order to achieve this it manipulates the entire galaxy in such a way that appears to have no desire to minimize suffering.
"It is said the Force has a will, it has a destiny for us all. I wield it, but it uses us all, and that is abhorrent to me. Because I hate the Force. I hate that it seems to have a will, that it would control us to achieve some measure of balance, when countless lives are lost. But in you... I see the potential to see the Force die, to turn away from it's will. And that is what pleases me. You are beautiful to me, Exile. A dead spot in the Force, an emptiness in which its will might be denied."

I would actually argue the reverse, that the game as a whole, including Kreia, gave the setting more respect than it probably deserved

I like to think it was written by people who were frustrated with Star Wars always being about a big bad Empire thing and the softy underdog wins the day. Like damn it, explore what all these things in the setting mean and are. What is the Force? Who cares about the Force? Is the Republic actually liked? Why does it have to be about 'good' and 'evil'?

Okay I started a new games with more mods since I found a different PC female head I liked better than the defaults. Also a mod that gives me basic clothes at the start, and a mod that lets me upgrade those clothes so I can keep wearing them till I get robes. Also a mod that fixes the default clothes to actually look different based on class instead of all looking like the Guardian colors.
I then made a lady sentinel just because her clothes were the best looking to me.
