This is a fun one, Martins Licis is going to try to break the steinborn squat record at the Arnold this year. This is him doing 505lbs, he says that the record is 550 but I haven't fact checked that but who cares because this is awesome.

Everything about that lift is pure insanity to me.

It's one of those really old school lifts.

    Like early 1900s old.

Pretty smooth back squat for a single at 385lbs. I think my hip finally healed. Time to make the run for four wheels.

Also almost pooping myself doing hip thrusts. Time to make the run for adult support garments.

Can I ask what your hip injury was and what you did to recover?

Sure. I tweaked my left hip flexor, somehow, so every time I got into a squat position, it would hurt. Pretty much any hinging on the left hurt, so I had to back off all movements involving a loaded hinge. I also did a stretching routine at least once a week focusing on my flexors. Took me four months to fully recover.

That steinborn squat is nutso looking.

I'm gonna ask my trainer is we can do that at some point.

I'm not sure how that dude was concentrating with that dog barking.

Get a copy of Kubik's Dinosaur Training. He has all sorts of old school lifts in there.

The US All Around Weightlifting Association rulebook has a bunch of old school lifts in there.

Yeesh 4 months... I took 2 months off and my hip is no better. I'm going to start stretching once a week and stop squatting. Tired of this 1 step forward, 2 steps back shit.

According to my app I had never done deficit deads as heavy as I did recently when I did 3 sets of 5 at 405#. That was a pretty easy workout, so I'm looking forward to setting "PRs" for a bit as I push the weight up on this accessory.

Got back under 315 in the squat yesterday and it went ok, I didn't feel great but it wasn't an awful grinder or anything. I feel like I probably cut it a little high but I've decided to give myself grace and not worry about it.

Hit 240lbs on squats today a new max rep weight.

Finally back up to 110lbs on the overhead press after the weird rotator cuff pain last summer.

And my deadlift is kinda hanging around 330lbs, but I pulled em all clean this week so up to 340 next week.

Man missing a bunch of sessions at Christmas/ New years eve time and catching a flu a couple weeks back really fucked my progression up, but hopefully I'm up over 250 with the squat by next Monday.

I'm starting to run into a pretty noticeable problem where my chest is kinda lagging behind everything else. Gunna need to figure out what to do about that.

I'm having to hit the squats hard.

After getting thrown off for a while due to sickness/work/hating leg day I finally did a big leg session and was damn near unable to walk for 2 and half days afterwards.

I guess that's as good an indicator to do more of an exercise as anything.

Also, folks who take and then replace weights on the rack you're currently using while you're in the middle of sets is hella consternating.

other than overhead press I got my upper body lifts back to where they were at before I lost a few weeks to my knee, and I can do the full range of motion for squats now without any weight on the bar

overhead press is the dumbest exercise. I just want huge shoulders but nooooo everything has to be suuuuch a grind

OHP is definitely my worst lift, but it also feels the most rewarding to put up because it is such a stupid lift.

OHP can be a chore, are y’all doing anything to get extra volume in on them?

A little leg drive, bounce off the chest, back off sets, hammering the shit out of your triceps?

Also are you doing all of the rows, like all of them, because there's no pressing movement that's been improved for me more by a stronger back than OHP.

I do barbell rows which are up to about 185lbs

And i also do iso lateral high rows which are at 107lbs per arm.

Every so often I'll do rowing instead of the bike for my HIIT session.

  • Options
    GorkGork Registered User regular
As well as rows, I like to do push presses, seated overhead presses from pins (set at a level where your triceps are not involved) and incline bench (front delt involvement). I do at least one of these post OHP. Sometimes all of them if I’m feeling feisty.

Sumo deadlift day. 5*5*315 moved really well, so I tossed on an extra 50# and pulled a solid set of 3 (second set was glued to the floor, but it didn't matter. Finished out with a set of 8 back down at 315). Not quite where I am compared to conventional, but it's coming along. Hopefully it will help address some leg and hip issues that have been coming up.

Today’s lift was very much punching the clock

But I did my presses super set with pull ups and dips superset with rear delt flys so I feel better than not doing anything.

My back is getting better but I've been lifting pretty crappily for the last two months, just maintaining weight. I can squat now, and I'm benching super high reps (12-15) because anything heavy causes pain. Lots of leg press and T bar rows :(

Croc rows with straps are a nice way to make them better. Not a fan of using a flat bench, never hits right for me, if that's what the hot garbage part is for you too.

@Dead Legend can you explain your ghetto reverse hyper? I've been trying to figure something out in place of a real one, is this something you built, or just macgyver'ed from regular gym equipment?

Pertinent to this thread I think, the clean label group just put out a study evaluating 134 protein powders (52 brands) for contaminants and nutritional value.

I wouldn't put a ton of stock into the clean label project. It looks like they're trying to make some things seem scarier than they actually are, and they've been called out in the past by snopes and others for being misleading.

edit: also F all kinds of free weight rows, I still vastly prefer certain machines and cable rows

I can post a video if you like, but we have an old low row stack that I hooked up a length of chain and then put a vertical jump box in front of it, with a duffel bag strap attached to the chain, and I adjust the height to clear your feet with some plates stacked on the box.

So instead of the weight being on a pendulum directly under you like a true reverse hyper, the weight is out front and you’re at a mechanical disadvantage. No true traction but it’s better than nothing. Also, great ab isometric.

If you want video it will have to wait til I’m home because apparently WiFi is taking a shit at work
