like, i can see the technical details of how these work, but what's the ultimate consequence? like, in laymans terms, what does this allow a bad actor to do? take over my system, get my private information?
Let's them read through stuff going through the processor. At a personal level basically very little. It is more a cloud server issue as it allows folks to skip around encryption stuff I guess.
Variant #2 (Spectre) basically means I can root kit the fuck out of any system by injecting my own instruction address into the branch prediction cache. :rotate:
That’s amoreeeee
Wait wait wait, so you can essentially just tell it where to put all the info you are looking for?
the real question is how is this going to affect my gaming PC?
although there's something deliciously capitalistic about the idea that everybody's gaming PCs will run 30% slower, so gamers end up buying higher-end processors to make up the difference and Intel ends up making money from this
i'm guessing that's not how this works but the idea is funny and also not funny
See Thom's statement above.
There's a lot we still don't know, but gaming performance is unlikely to be severely affected by this.
especially if you have a Skylake or Kaby Lake processor

I can't, in good conscience, awesome this, because EM is secretly a lovely person and is really rather svelte

For home users, standard security recommendations apply: make sure your browser and operating system are up to date, don't run browser add-ons that you don't need, don't install a lot of crapware apps, run a decent antivirus program.
In order to take advantage of the new vulnerabilities, a hypothetical attacker still has to trick your computer into running some kind of malware.
The reason that so many people are shitting their pants over this is because this allows somebody who rents space on a cloud hosting provider to potentially access other customers' spaces on the same provider. That's not something that you, as a home user, can do much about.

Basically anything can get out of sandbox. The big info sec fears I've been seeing have been two fold. Escaping VMs which is horrifying for enterprise customers. And the ability to have JS escape it's sandbox to do things like trying to grab passwords. So the solution is updating your patches. Right now there aren't any known malware using this in the wild. So the end of the world isn't upon us. But patch.

I ask because I stir fried aubergine marinated in miso this evening and it came out surprisingly meaty
It's so cold a water main broke about a half mile from home yesterday. Shut the road down for 16 hours while they dug it up and fixed it. We're under a boil water order for 48 hours. Today, the city gov announced there's so much ice in the water at the pumping plant, we're also under a limit consumption notice, because the plant is struggling to pump water.
4 more days until it even gets close to being above freezing...

Global climate change is a real bitch.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

Not sure about Matt's area, but Baltimore blows a main water main about once a month. Seems like more often, sometimes, TBH. They refuse to fix the system comprehensively, so... I mean yeah, global climate change is going to fuck a lot of shit, but the problems here aren't really to do with that. They are still using wood pipes as originally laid in olden times in some areas. Shit is ridic.
Also, I had planned on working from home for a while. Instead I've gotten a bit tipsy on champagne.

We're selling this one as a "Classic Canadian" winter.
Which, admittedly, it does largely feel like so far. That it occasionally hits temperatures colder than the surface of Mars really isn't THAT bad.
Catastrophic for places not used to nor prepared for this kind of weather? Sure, I can see that.
But so far climate change is just saying "toughen up, pussies!", in my opinion.
Do you really NEED land to live on or water to drink or for entire continents to not be on fire? I feel like those are more WANTS than NEEDS, to be honest.

Okay, the bolded is a bit of a lie.
This is a possible vector for data leaks and identity theft.
But everybody should be taking basic steps against identity theft anyway:
- Stop reusing passwords. Use a password manager if you can.
- Check your credit report once a year.
- Consider getting a credit freeze.

14 year old girls don't text they snap and insta god you're so old
(most of it IS being done through Snapchat which I hadn't used or had on my phone until yesterday and oh god what am I doing)
Also whenever I check my credit report it just says "Quarantined". That's good, right?
Also seriously now I am away, I want to get lost in a virtual world for a couple hours!
Oh my God narwhal give me your snap so I can send you snaps of kitties I see on walks and sometimes Pinecone dancing when he doesn't know I'm looking (100% of my snap content is those things)

This is the pretty deep south so people drove from miles away to see it, and it was the talk of the area.
Here's what you have to do

Do you run a lot of cpu intensive processes like rendering or massive video/art projects? Minimal. Just patch computer up and hope for the best.

I just built this guy. Was a little miffed about the news TBH. Nobody gives a shit about my data. I'd rather have the performance.
I'll also apparently be texting like I'm a 14 year old girl 'cause this lady is all about texting at the moment
Be good, do good, all that good stuff!
